Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Sunday (April 12) conceded defeat in parliamentary elections, ending his 16-year rule, as conservative challenger Peter Magyar secured a decisive victory on a promise of “system change”. “The election results, though not yet final, are clear and understandable; for us, they are painful but unambiguous,” Orbán said, acknowledging the outcome. “We have not been entrusted with the responsibility and opportunity to govern. I congratulated the winning party.” Magyar, a former government insider and political newcomer, confirmed the development, saying Orbán had personally called him. “Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just called to congratulate us on our victory,” he posted on X, as his Tisza party led with over 52 per cent of the vote against Fidesz’s roughly 39 per cent with more than half the precincts counted.

Orbán, widely seen as one of Donald Trump’s closest European allies, had built a long-standing partnership with Washington’s conservative leadership. The relationship was highlighted by US Vice President JD Vance’s recent high-profile visit to Hungary, during which he backed Orbán’s re-election bid and described him as a “defender of national sovereignty” and a “model for the West”. The visit was viewed as an effort to consolidate a broader populist alignment in Europe. Also Read: Iran says it ‘will not bow to any threats’ after Trump orders Hormuz blockade Magyar’s victory signals a significant political shift in Hungary, with his campaign centred on institutional reforms, anti-corruption measures and a reset of governance after more than a decade of Orbán’s dominance. Reacting to the result, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the outcome, framing it as a moment of realignment with the European Union. “Hungary has chosen Europe. Europe has always chosen Hungary. Together we are stronger. A country returns to its European path. The Union becomes stronger,” she wrote on X. Orbán’s tenure had often put Hungary at odds with the EU, particularly over rule of law concerns and his reluctance to support funding linked to Ukraine’s war effort against Russia, reflecting his relatively close ties with Moscow. The election outcome marks a turning point in Hungary’s political trajectory, with implications for its relationship with the European Union and the broader balance of power within Europe.

Magyar, a former government insider and political newcomer, confirmed victory, saying Orbán called to concede. “Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just called to congratulate us,” he said, as Tisza led with over 52% against Fidesz’s 39%, signalling a decisive shift.

Trump vows US ‘economic might’ for Hungary if nationalist PM Viktor Orbán wins Sunday’s pivotal election

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin about his possible reaction to the European Union using the frozen Russian assets. Orbán, on his way to Brussels, said that he sent a letter to the Russian President seeking his response. He asked whether Putin would take into account the position of the individual member states. The matter of frozen Russian assets as a "reparations loan" to Ukraine will be discussed in the upcoming EU summit.

Hungary has respected loyal cooperation on frozen Russian assets. The EU responded by stripping Hungary of its rights. Orbán has supposedly received a response which indicated that Russia will not take the "reparations loan" of Russian assets to Ukraine easily, and there would be a “strong reaction” from Russia. It would take into account the positions of individual member states. Orbán has also reiterated that even if the EU nations vote for using the frozen Russian funds, Hungary will not support the decision. He also cribbed about the European Union stripping “Hungary of its rights” and violating the principle of "loyal cooperation".Viktor Orbán's Hungary and the European Union have been at a crossroads since 2018, with discussion about suspending Hungary’s EU membership rights due to serious and continuous violations of European values. In November 2025, the European Union voted in favour of sanctions on Hungary for descending into an electoral autocracy, despite the parliament being dominated by the right and the Patriots for Europe, funded by Viktor Orbán himself. Orbán did not take the decision well, and he does "not consider the principles of loyal cooperation to be binding" in the sanctions debate.

Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán says he contacted Vladimir Putin to ask how Russia might respond if the EU uses frozen Russian assets for Ukraine reparations. Hungary opposes the move, warning it could escalate tensions, as EU leaders prepare to debate the asset decision.

Donald Trump had already made America great, and now wants to “Make Europe Great Again”. A leaked document from the classified National Security Strategy suggests that the Trump administration wants to encourage four EU countries- Austria, Hungary, Italy and Poland to break apart from the European Union and align with the United States. The 29-page NSS document threatens the European Union with ‘Civilisational Erasure’ if it doesn't mend its migration policy.
Goals outlined in the leaked document
The leaked document is a longer version of the "National Security Strategy", which was circulated before the unclassified NSS document. It outlines more explicitly how the US can “Make Europe Great Again”. The focus is on sovereignty and traditional “European ways of life”. The intention is to work with Right-wing governments of white supremacists and potentially separate them from the EU framework. The White House has denied the existence of any such version.“President Trump is transparent and put his signature on one NSS that clearly instructs the US government to execute on his defined principles and priorities,” Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told Defence One. However, the secret file, being reported, was obtained by Defence One, suggesting that Washington is trying to pull European right-wing parties and governments into its circle of influence. “And we should support parties, movements, and intellectual and cultural figures who seek sovereignty and preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life … while remaining pro-American,” the document reads. This appears to be in synchrony with the unclassified documents on “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”.
So who can these leaders and parties be?
The document doesn't specifically classify these parties; however, Trump had been a vocal supporter of Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz party of Hungary, Giorgia Meloni and the Brothers of Italy party on several occasions.
