The attack was said to be the fifth of this month and took place a day after massive missile strikes on Ukraine which injured at least five people. &nbsp;

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war was halted for a period since early March, but Russia has launched its biggest drone swarm yet in a renewed air campaign unleashed 10 days ago. &nbsp;

Serhiy Popko, who is the head of Kyiv's city military administration, said in comments posted on the Telegram messaging app that "as at the front, the plans of the aggressor failed".&nbsp;

Ukraine's air force said on its Telegram messaging app that "overnight into the 'sacred' May 9, (they) launched an attack on the territory of Ukraine".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Popko said Russian forces were trying "to kill as many civilians as possible on this day" and the attack was reportedly carried out with cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea region.&nbsp;

Popko said that "Kyiv stood up again and will stand up in the future!"&nbsp;

Reports emerged that during the Victory Day celebrations, Russian cruise missiles exploded in the air over Kyiv. During the Victory Day parade in Moscow's Red Square, &nbsp;Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the world is at a "turning point", and a "war" was unleashed on Russia.

"Today civilisation is again at a decisive turning point. A war has been unleashed against our motherland," the Russian president said, further calling for Russia to be victorious: "For Russia, for our armed forces, for victory! Hurrah!"&nbsp;

Developments show that Moscow is looking forward to escalating the offence but they suffered a minor setback when Russia's mercenary Wagner forces said they didn't receive enough weapons to hold the positions.&nbsp;

The battle of Bakhmut has been intensified and Wagner forces have borne the brunt of the deadly fighting, but the head of the mercenary group had threatened to pull out from the position but later he changed the stance.&nbsp;

Now, the head of the group said that they have yet to receive the ammunition promised by Moscow — taking a U-turn from his recent comment that supplies had begun to arrive.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ukraine is also expected to launch a counteroffensive in the east and south.&nbsp;

In response, the Russian foreign ministry said, "A strong protest was expressed to the Polish authorities for practically conniving with neo-Nazi thugs."

Meanwhile, private broadcaster TVN24 posted the footage with banners saying ''Kill Putin'' with blue and yellow colours depicting Ukraine's flag.

However, Russia has denied altering its operation according to Victory Day with Lavrov saying, “Our military isn’t going to artificially link its action to any date, including Victory Day.”

The denazification claim has been derived by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who is Jewish.

Putin apologised after Lavrov's remarks suggesting Adolf Hitler had Jewish roots drew sharp criticism from Israel.

British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told LBC Radio last week, “He’s (Putin) been rolling the pitch, laying the ground for being able to say, ‘Look, this is now a war against Nazis, and what I need is more people.’”

Yet, there were mischievous elements backed by Islamic fanatics, who went into a violent mob frenzy after the commencement of the visit which sadly saw trails of destruction of Hindu property including vandalization of the Ustad Alauddin Khan musical academy in Brahmanbaria that shows that the communal elements are still active in Bangladesh primarily to target Indian cultural places due to the former’s religious intolerance and a radical mindset. &nbsp;

This is being mentioned to prime the host authorities to be extra vigilant on the Indian President’s visit as anti-India forces, ostensibly with the tacit support of the forces in Bangladesh, i.e. Pakistan ISI and pro Pakistan elements, may try to sabotage the atmospherics by engaging into unpleasant activities.&nbsp;

Some quarters may feel that such an apprehension is perhaps far-fetched or unrealistic, yet, an alert law and order apparatus needs to be on its toes to ensure that no untoward incident is allowed to happen in an attempt to impair Indo-BD relations or foment a communal divide. &nbsp;This seems more imperative in view of the recent reports when pro-Pakistan supporters donning jerseys and carrying Pakistani flags were seen in the stadium cheering the Pakistani team in the cricket tourneys.&nbsp;

In sum, this means pro-Pakistan, and by implication, anti-India forces are still active and their nefarious plans to dampen the bilateral ties this should not be permitted to succeed. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

To tie up the loose ends on the emerging visit of the Indian President, the Indian Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who has also been the Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh, not very long ago, paid a visit to Dhaka which was considered significant as he carried an important communication from the Indian government.

Amid these rejoicings, however, there was a sudden dampener for Bangladesh when the US recently imposed sanctions on Bangladesh’s prestigious security outfit the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and its top officials including the top cop, Benazir Ahmad. &nbsp;

In total, six current and former officials have been indicted by the US on the International Human Rights’ Day. &nbsp;

However, Bangladesh was quick to react and protested against the US for slapping sanctions/bans. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary, Masud Bin Momen summoned the US Ambassador in Dhaka, Earl R Miller to register a formal protest against the US decision. In the same vein, Dr Hasan Mahmud, the Bangladesh Information and Broadcasting Minister charged (December 11) the US for first peeping into its own track record of human rights’ abuses before casting aspersions on Bangladesh. &nbsp;

From these angry reactions, it would appear that Bangladesh will not accept such diktat from the US and continue to make a noise. Bangladesh is more upset on the US decision for revoking the visa of former Army Chief Gen Aziz Ahmed for his alleged charges of corruption and irregularities. These developments are unlikely to affect the President’s visit but are worth taking note of to get a holistic picture of the prevailing scenario.

In the meantime, to keep up the atmospherics and also in line with keeping up the spirit of the two countries alive, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Vikram Doraiswamy stated (December 10) that the secular identity of Bangladesh is intact and the country had, changed the `ideological map’ of South Asia through it’s liberation in 1971.

He further said that Indo-BD friendship is guaranteed because a nation that is comfortable on its own identity that Bangladesh is, will always be a friend to its neighbor. Such articulations on a clear note of optimism, is a perfect backdrop under which President Kovind’s visit to Bangladesh is afoot and this is expected to open a new vista in the bilateral relations further cementing ties, also proving to be an example to other nations in South Asia. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Many believe that the event was pushed back not because of the virus, but owing to the referendum on the&nbsp;Russian constitution. As part of this, over 200 provisions will be amended. However, the most controversial amendment would allow Putin to clench on to his presidency indefinitely.

During his first stint as president, Putin had two terms, for four years each, from 2000 to 2008.&nbsp;After this, he made way for his trusted deputy and became the prime minister.&nbsp;In 2012 he took office again, and this time his terms lasted for six years each, with his current term slated to end in 2024.

What many critics are calling a “constitutional coup” will enable him to stay in power at least until 2036, which would make him Russia’s longest-serving leader.&nbsp;Stalin currently holds the record, with a 29-year term.

The world’s longest serving leaders include Fidel Castro in Cuba with 49 years, followed by Chiang Kai Shek in Taiwan for 47 years, and Kim Il Sung of North Korea who held power for 46 years.
