Flood conditions are worsening across parts of North India, with Bihar among the worst affected. The Ganga has crossed its highest flood mark at Gandhi Ghat in Patna, prompting heightened vigilance in downstream districts. More than 19 lakh people across 11 Bihar districts have been affected, according to officials.

Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations, deploying boats and disaster-response teams across vulnerable areas. The latest reports say 1,345 boats, 27 SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams are being used for evacuation and relief operations.

Flooding and heavy rain are also affecting Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi-NCR, with further rainfall forecast across several states. The IMD has warned of heavy rain in multiple parts of northern and central India.

Otherwise, the opposition will spread negativity."<h3>IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall</h3>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other regions of Uttar Pradesh over the next three days. CM Yogi escorted out of UP assembly as complex in Lucknow gets waterlogged after heavy rain

At least&nbsp;300 have died in eastern and central India while more than six million others have been affected by floods that have submerged villages, washed away crops, destroyed roads and disrupted power and phone lines, officials said on Tuesday.

In the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, heavy monsoon rains have caused rivers, including the mighty Ganges and its tributaries, to burst their banks forcing people into relief camps.&nbsp;

Government officials in eastern Bihar, which has seen some of the worst flooding this year with almost 120 dead and more than five million affected, said the situation was serious.

&quot;The flood waters have engulfed low-lying areas, homes and fields of crops,&quot; said Zafar Rakib, a district magistrate of Katihar, one of 24 districts out of Bihar&#39;s 38 districts which have been hit by the deluge.

&quot;We have shifted people to higher ground and they are being provided with cooked rice, clean drinking water, polythene sheets,&quot; he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Both the Ganges and Yamuna rivers crossed danger levels and flood waters continued to rise in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, where 43 people have died and over one million are affected. Schools remained closed in the cities of Varanasi and Allahabad.&nbsp;

In the holy city of Varanasi, where thousands of Hindus flock daily, was also forced to halt cremations along the banks of sacred Ganges river, forcing families to cremate their relatives on the terrace roofs of nearby houses, officials said.

Television pictures showed villagers wading waist deep in floodwaters with their livestock, mud-and-brick homes collapsing and people climbing into wooden boats to get to relief camps.

In the central state of Madhya Pradesh, where at least 70 have died since the onset of the monsoons in June and more than 40,000 homes partially or fully destroyed, almost 20,000 people have been evacuated to relief camps.

Officials said villagers would return home when water levels receded, although the Indian Meteorological Department has forecast more rains for central India over the next two days.

Modi offers federal support

India usually experiences monsoon rains from June to September, which are vital for its agriculture,&nbsp;making up 18 per cent of its gross domestic product and provides employment for almost half of its 1.3 billion population. &nbsp;The June-September monsoon is also crucial for&nbsp;India&#39;s rain-fed farm sector that accounts for nearly 15 per cent of its $2 trillion economy.

But in many states across the country, the rains frequently cause landslides and flooding that devastate crops, destroy homes and expose people to diseases such as diarrhoea.

According to the&nbsp;Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon rains in the country were 15 per cent above average in the week ending August 10. It is pertinent to mention that an&nbsp;average or normal monsoon means rainfall between 96 and 104 per cent of a 50-year average of 89 centimeters.&nbsp;

National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) have been deployed to the five states, rescuing more than 33,000 people stranded in remote villages. The NDRF have also distributed relief and provided medical assistance to over 9,000 survivors.

The devastation prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to offer additional support from the federal government.

&quot;I pray for the safety and well-being of those in areas affected by floods,&quot; said Modi in a statement. &quot;The Centre assures total support in the rescue and relief operations.&quot;

Aid agencies responding in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh said it was critical to be better prepared to minimise the deaths, displacement and devastation which is caused every year.

Devastating floods in India leave 300 dead, force villagers into relief camps

India&#39;s holy city of Varanasi has been forced to halt cremations along the banks of the sacred river Ganges as deadly floods from monsoon rains hit parts of the country, an official said on Tuesday.

More than 100,000 people have been forced from their homes in recent days in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring Bihar as rain-swollen rivers burst their banks.

Over 20 people have been killed in the two states from the floods that hit swathes of India every year during the monsoon season.

Floods have inundated the ghats or platforms on the edge of the Ganges in Varanasi, forcing families to cremate loved ones on the terrace roofs of nearby houses, Uttar Pradesh government spokesman Shailendra Pandey said.

&quot;As the ghats are not available for cremation, the roofs of Havelis (old mansions) and other old houses along the ghats are being used for cremation, but with great difficulty,&quot; Pandey said.

Varanasi is India&#39;s most sacred Hindu city where thousands flock to cremate relatives in the hope of attaining nirvana, before scattering the ashes in the Ganges.

Cremations have been affected in the Hindu holy city of Allahabad, also in Uttar Pradesh, where pyres were being lit in nearby congested alleys, an official there said.

In flooded Banda district, a woman gave birth on a boat on Monday while on her way to a medical centre, sparking criticism that local authorities provided little assistance.

A senior official said severe water logging meant it was extremely difficult to send medical help in time, leading the baby to be born in an inflatable dinghy amid the floodwaters.

&quot;The child is fit and fine. We are extending all possible help to the family. Even if we had sent an ambulance there was no way it could have reached that place,&quot; police superintendent R. K. Pandey said.

At least nine people have died in Uttar Pradesh state and another 15 in eastern Bihar over the past two days as floods hit rural areas as well as some cities, disaster management officials said.

A total of 130,000 people were sheltering in relief camps across the two states, officials said, and additional emergency workers have been deployed to help with rescue and relief efforts.

Several people have also been killed in the central state of Madhya Pradesh state from flooding in the last 24 hours, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.

Floods and landslides from the monsoon running from June to September claimed more than 50 lives last month, mostly in the remote, northeast state of Assam.
