US President Donald Trump may soon have a lake named after him following proposals to christen a contested Balkan reservoir in his honour. He already has golf clubs and hotels named after him.

The lake in question is a 24-kilometre stretch of water straddling the border of former war foes Serbia and Kosovo, who both claim ownership and have different names for it.

Three quarters of the reservoir lies in Kosovo, while the rest is in Serbia. But the dispute is not just a quarrel about the name.

A huge banner appeared Thursday on Kosovo's side of the reservoir reading "Lake Trump", while another hung over a bridge thanked Trump for "bringing peace" following recent US-brokered agreements between Kosovo and Serbia.

The tussle over ownership of the lake -- called Ujman in Kosovo and Gazivode in Serbia -- is one of many disputes still haunting the neighbours 20 years after they broke apart in war.

After the banners emerged, Kosovo's Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti wrote on Twitter that he "welcomed" the proposal to rename the body of water "Lake Trump" in honour of the "historic economic normalization agreement" signed at the White House in early September.

The agreements, which analysts said were light on substance despite Trump's insistence on their "historic" nature, included a commitment to a feasibility study for "sharing" the lake.

According to Trump advisor Richard Grenell, who led talks on the agreements, the idea of Lake Trump was originally a joke.

"There was this incredible fight about the name so I kind of jokingly said... well, I'm going to keep referring to it as Lake Trump", Grenell said in an interview with a US talk show.

"And both leaders jumped at it and said -– I’m OK with Lake Trump, let's call it Lake Trump", he added.

The said lake is the crucial source of drinking water for more than a third of Kosovo's 1.8 million population, and a cooling source for the coal plants that produce almost all of Kosovo's electricity.

Serbia, which still does not recognise its former province's independence, considers the lake its property.

Locals in the surrounding area, a northern part of Kosovo home mainly to ethnic Serbs, were unclear of who was behind the naming initiative.

Lake Trump? Disputed reservoir could be named after US president

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed new curbs on imports of Cuban rum and cigars and banned Americans from staying at properties owned by the Cuban government, as he seeks to lock in the Cuban-American vote in the swing state of Florida ahead of November's presidential election.

"Today, as part of our continuing fight against communist oppression, I am announcing that the Treasury Department will prohibit U.S. travellers from staying at properties owned by the Cuban government," Trump said at a White House event.

"We're also further restricting the importation of alcohol and Cuban tobacco," the Republican president said at the ceremony honouring Bay of Pigs veterans and commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Mariel boatlift that brought 120,000 Cubans to Miami.

Since taking office in January 2017, Trump has sought to unwind a detente with Cuba pursued by his Democratic predecessor, President Barack Obama.

In June 2019, the Trump administration imposed heavy new restrictions on travel to Cuba, saying the move aimed to further pressure the Communist government over its support for Venezuela’s embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

The Treasury Department said at the time the United States would no longer allow so-called group people-to-people educational travel, one of the most popular exemptions to the overall ban on U.S. tourism to Cuba.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration ordered Marriott International to wind down hotel operations in Communist-run Cuba. Starwood Hotels, now owned by Marriott, was the first U.S. hotel company to sign a deal with Cuba since the 1959 revolution amid the normalisation of relations sought by Obama.

The U.S. sanctions have further crippled an economy already struggling with a decline in aid from leftist ally Venezuela.

The move also comes as Trump and Democratic hopeful Joe Biden remained locked in a tight race in Florida, a state which Trump won in 2016 by just 1.2 percentage points.

Trump's aides believe his toughened stance on Cuba, as well as Venezuela, has gone down well in the large Cuban-American community in south Florida, an important voting bloc in the state.

No Republican has won the presidency without Florida since Calvin Coolidge in 1924, and Trump will hold a rally in Jacksonville on Thursday.

A woman suspected of sending a letter containing the poison ricin to US President Donald Trump has been arrested, a US law enforcement official said.

According to a CNN report, she was taken into custody when she tried to enter the US from Canada at a border crossing in New York state. She was then carrying a gun.

Law enforcement officials had intercepted a ricin package sent to Trump last week, and investigators were looking into the possibility that it came from Canada.

Two tests had been done to confirm the presence of ricin. All mail for the White House is sorted and screened at an offsite facility before reaching the White House.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed Saturday that it was working with the FBI to investigate the matter -- but is still not in a position to issue a statement, or to confirm/deny any reports on arrests

Authorities are investigating additional similar packages mailed to addresses in Texas that may be connected to the same sender in Canada.

Ricin is a highly toxic compound extracted from castor beans that has been used in terror plots. It can be used in powder, pellet, mist or acid form.

If ingested, ricin causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by failure of the liver, spleen and kidneys, and death by collapse of the circulatory system.

As little as 500 micrograms -- an amount the size of the head of a pin -- can kill an adult.

There have been several prior instances in which US officials have been targetted with ricin sent through the mail.

Here's what Bob Woodward's book 'Rage' says about US Prez Trump

US President Donald Trump has instructed that dozens of oil refiner requests for retroactive waivers from US biofuel laws be denied amid concerns the issue could cut into his support in the Farm Belt, three sources familiar with the decision said.

The move, in the form of a direction to the Environmental Protection Agency, marks the end of an effort by the refining industry to come into compliance with a January court decision that said the Trump administration should not have given out some waivers in previous years.

The waivers have been a battleground for the influential oil and corn lobbies, both major constituencies for Trump as he seeks re-election in November.

The people familiar with Trump's direction to the EPA wished to remain anonymous so they could speak candidly about the decision.

The EPA did not immediately comment.

Under the US Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), oil refiners must blend billions of gallons of biofuels into their products, or buy credits from those that do. But refiners may also seek an exemption from those obligations if they prove the requirements would cause them financial harm.

Biofuel advocates say the waivers hurt demand for corn-based ethanol. The oil industry says the obligations are too pricey.

US renewable fuel credits for 2020 rose on Wednesday to their highest since March 2018. Credits traded at 55 cents each, up nearly 18% from the previous session.

The Trump administration has quadrupled the number of exemptions have given out to refiners, causing outrage in farm states, such as Iowa.

In January, though, an appeals court ruled that waivers granted to small refineries after 2010 could only be approved as extensions of pre-existing waivers. Most recipients of waivers in recent years have not continuously received them, and refiners sent in waiver applications to come into compliance with that court ruling.

In Iowa the federal administration's expansion of the waiver program has complicated Republican Senator Joni Ernst's reelection bid.

In recent weeks, Iowa officials argued that without action, Ernst - and perhaps Trump - could be in trouble come November.

Ernst has been a staunch defender of Trump but has been working behind the scenes to argue that his administration should deny the pending retroactive waivers, according to one of the people familiar with Trump's direction to the EPA.

The biofuel industry welcomed the news. "Now, more than ever, our nation's farmers and ethanol producers are counting on the RFS to provide market stability and certainty during an incredibly difficult and tumultuous time," said a coalition that included the Renewable Fuels Association and the National Corn Growers Association.

The 2020 US presidential election is less than two months away, and both the Democrats and Republicans are working overtime to tilt the narrative in their favour.

The US President Donald Trump has found support from an unusual admirer, the niece of Osama Bin Laden, who was the master mind behind the 9/11 terror attacks.

Noor Bin Ladin recently suggested that only Donald Trump can save America from another 9/11. Noor Bin Ladin is currently an author based out of Switzerland, and spells her name differently than her infamous uncle. She also considers herself “an American at heart”.

Ladin recently gave her first-ever interview to the New York Post. She levelled some accusations against the Democrats, but was all praises for Donald Trump.

“ISIS proliferated under the Obama-Biden administration, leading to them coming to Europe”, she said.

“Trump has shown that he protects America and us, by extension from foreign threats..... By obliterating terrorists at the root and before they get a chance to strike”, she added.

But does she have a point?

The Trump administration has indeed worked on further improving America's defence capabilities.

But recently, Trump's relationship with the military brass has become increasingly strained. Some of it is due to Trump threatening to use the Insurrection Act to provide troops for law enforcement against the widespread protests.

Additionally, a recent report claimed that Trump once insulted captured US Service members. Published in the Atlantic magazine, the story was based on the statements of some close Trump aides.

The men apparently claimed that Trump cancelled a 2018 visit to pay respects at a military cemetery because he allegedly thought that the dead soldiers were quote unquote “losers and suckers”

The US president has denied using the words. But today - he launched another attack on the US military, in fact the entire defence establishment. Trump said that the Pentagon wants to keep fighting wars so that it can keep defence contractors happy.

“As for Biden, shipped away our jobs, threw open our borders and sent our youth to fight in these crazy, endless wars. And it's one of the reasons the military, I’m not saying the military is in love with me. The soldiers are. The top people in the pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy”, Trump said.

Attacks underway

Trump & Biden have been taking some interesting swipes at each other. While Joe Biden attacks Trump on the virus and the economy, Trump retorts with scathing words about Biden's alleged softness towards China.

“You know, you all said it. America's been knocked down by this pandemic, over 190,000 Americans are dead. 6.2 million are infected with covid, 30 million unemployed and nearly one in six small businesses has been shut down. Worst of all, it didn't have to be this way. No other country in the world that covered spiral so far out of control. Donald Trump ignored the warnings, refused to prepare and failed to protect our nation, and now more than six months in, he still doesn't have a plan”, Biden said.

“If Biden wins, China wins, because China will own this country. If Biden wins, China will own this country and hopefully you're not going to be able to find that out. It's the most important election in our history right now”, Trump said.

The presidential debates are scheduled for later this month.

Signs of stress appear in US President Trump's relationship with the military

Newly declassified White House tapes disclose former US president Richard Nixon spoke disparagingly about Indians and reveal the bigotry he and his national security advisor Henry Kissinger held.

This bigotry, it's said, influenced US policy toward India and South Asia under his presidency.

Richard Nixon, a Republican, was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974.

"As Americans grapple with problems of racism and power, a newly declassified trove of White House tapes provides startling evidence of the bigotry voiced by President Richard M. Nixon and Henry Kissinger, his national security adviser," Gary Bass, professor at Princeton, wrote in an opinion piece 'The Terrible Cost of Presidential Racism' in The New York Times.

"The full content of these tapes reveal how U.S. policy toward South Asia under Mr. Nixon was influenced by his hatred of, and sexual repulsion toward, Indians," Bass, author of 'The Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger and a Forgotten Genocide'', writes.

Bass says that the declassified White House tapes reveal a "stunning" conversation between Nixon, Kissinger and the then White House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman in the Oval Office in June 1971 in which Nixon asserts in a "venomous tone" that Indian women are "undoubtedly the most unattractive women in the world."

Nixon also calls Indians "most sexless", "nothing" and "pathetic", according to the tapes.

"On Nov. 4, 1971, during a private break from a contentious White House summit with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India - a rare woman leader at the time - the President harangued Mr. Kissinger about his sexual disgust at Indians," Bass writes.

Referring to Indians, Nixon says to Kissinger: "To me, they turn me off. How the hell do they turn other people on, Henry? Tell me." Bass writes that while Kissinger's response is inaudible in the tapes, "it did not discourage the president from his theme."

In November 1971, in the middle of a discussion about India-Pakistan tensions with Kissinger and Secretary of State William Rogers, after Rogers mentioned reprimanding Gandhi, the President blurted, "I don't know how they reproduce!"

Bass writes in the NYT piece that while Kissinger has portrayed himself as being above the racism of the Nixon White House, the tapes show "him joining in the bigotry, though the tapes cannot determine whether he truly shared the president''s prejudices or was just pandering to him."

For instance, on June 3, 1971, Kissinger was "indignant" at the Indians as the country sheltered millions of Bengali refugees who had fled the Pakistan Army. Kissinger blamed the Indians for causing the refugee flow and then condemned Indians as a whole, as he said, "They are a scavenging people."

At one point, Kissinger had said Indians are "superb flatterers" and "are masters at flattery. They are masters at subtle flattery. That's how they survived 600 years. They suck up -- their great skill is to suck up to people in key positions."

Nixon had even been furious with his ambassador to India Kenneth Keating, who two days earlier had confronted Nixon and Kissinger in the Oval Office, calling Pakistan's crackdown "almost entirely a matter of genocide." Bass says that Nixon and Kissinger had "staunchly supported" the military regime in Pakistan as it killed hundreds of thousands of Bengalis, with 10 million refugees fleeing into neighbouring India.

Voicing prejudices about Pakistanis, Kissinger had in August 1971 told Nixon that "the Pakistanis are fine people, but they are primitive in their mental structure."

He added, "They just don't have the subtlety of the Indians."

"These emotional displays of prejudice help to explain a foreign policy debacle," Bass says, adding that Nixon and Kissinger''s policies toward South Asia in 1971 "were not just a moral disaster but a strategic fiasco on their own Cold War terms.

While Nixon and Kissinger "had some reasons to favour Pakistan, an American ally which was secretly helping to bring about their historic opening to China, their biases and emotions contributed to their excessive support for Pakistan's murderous dictatorship throughout its atrocities," Bass said. "For decades, Mr. Nixon and Mr. Kissinger have portrayed themselves as brilliant practitioners of realpolitik, running a foreign policy that dispassionately served the interests of the United States.

"But these declassified White House tapes confirm a starkly different picture: racism and misogyny at the highest levels, covered up for decades under ludicrous claims of national security. A fair historical assessment of Mr. Nixon and Mr. Kissinger must include the full truth, unbleeped," Bass says. In December 2012, Bass had filed a legal request for a mandatory declassification review with the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.

The Nixon archivists released a few unbleeped tapes in May 2018, July 2019 and this May "after considerable wrangling".

Haldeman in the Oval Office in June 1971 in which Nixon asserts in a "venomous tone" that Indian women are "undoubtedly the most unattractive women in the world." Nixon also calls Indians "most sexless", "nothing" and "pathetic", according to the tapes. "On Nov. 4, 1971, during a private break from a contentious White House summit with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India - a rare woman leader at the time - the President harangued Mr. Kissinger about his sexual disgust at Indians," Bass writes. New tapes reveal former US president Richard Nixon's 'hatred' towards Indians

A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday granted President Donald Trump's request to delay Manhattan's district attorney from accessing his tax returns in connection with a criminal probe of his business practices.

The unsigned order by a panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan was a victory for the president in his yearlong quest to block District Attorney Cyrus Vance from enforcing a grand jury subpoena for eight years of personal and corporate returns.

Trump has been challenging an Aug. 20 decision by U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero to let Vance obtain the returns from the president's longtime accounting firm Mazars USA.

The district attorney had wanted access to the returns even during Trump's appeal, but Tuesday's order ends that possibility for now. Oral arguments have been scheduled for Sept. 25.

A spokesman for Vance declined to comment.

Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's lawyers, said they were pleased with the order and looked forward to arguing the merits of the president's appeal.

Vance began his probe after news that Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen paid pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet before the 2016 election about claimed sexual encounters with Trump, which the president has denied.

In July, the Supreme Court refused to block the subpoena, rejecting Trump's claim of absolute immunity from criminal probes while in the White House, but said Trump could raise other objections.

Trump is seeking re-election on Nov. 3. Vance has complained that dragging out the litigation has effectively given the Republican president the immunity he wanted.

Grand jury proceedings are held in secret, and if Trump's tax returns were handed over it could take months for the public to learn their contents.

The prior six presidents, both Republican and Democrat, from Jimmy Carter to Barack Obama, have released their tax returns.

Following the Supreme Court decision, Trump claimed that the subpoena from Vance, a Democrat, was "wildly overbroad" and issued in bad faith.

In seeking a stay, William Consovoy, another lawyer for Trump, told the appeals court that giving Vance a chance even to see the returns would cause the president irreparable harm.

"The status quo can never be restored," he said. "We can't make them forget what they learn."

Carey Dunne, a lawyer for Vance, downplayed that concern. "The toothpaste can be put back into the tube sufficiently to protect people's rights," he said.

Dunne also said each category of documents Vance sought was "directly relevant" to his probe, and Trump offered no specifics to suggest otherwise.
