It was a historic day in the United States on Wednesday (Nov. 6) as former President Donald Trump returned to power after getting a mandate in the 2024 elections. Trump, president of the US between 2016 and 2020, is all set to start his second term after gaining a majority on Electoral College votes' counting. While Trump is in seventh heaven, former India cricket team captain MS Dhoni is also doing the rounds on the internet after his old picture with Trump has gone viral.

During the 2023 US Open, Dhoni and friends were in the States enjoying the tennis carnival when they were invited by Trump for a golf game. Now retired, Dhoni took to the golf course of the next president, where he enjoyed a day out. On the same day, Dhoni was snapped in a picture with Trump, which is now viral on the internet after the latter’s win. Dhoni was seen wearing a blue T-shirt and Trump was spotted with a red hat and white T-shirt.

In a historic win, according to the Electoral College votes' count, the 78-year-old is set to become only the second president in the United States’ history to enjoy non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland in 1893 was the last president from the US to have been in power for non-consecutive terms. Trump’s victory comes after he got the better of Democratic candidate and sitting vice-president Kamala Harris.

For the first ever time, the US House of Representatives will welcome its very first openly transgender member as Democrat Sarah McBride won the election from Delaware on Tuesday (Nov 5). McBride, 34, became the first openly transgender person to serve as a state senator when she was elected in 2020, the first to speak at a US national political party convention in 2016, and also the first to intern at the White House in 2012, under former President Barack Obama. Ahead of her election, McBride said she would focus instead on the issues she would prioritise, rather than the history-making nature of her candidacy. US Election: FBI charges Ann Arbor man for threatening mass shooting attack 'if Trump wins'

Google, on US Election Day, Nov 5 2024, acknowledged a technical glitch that surfaced when users searched for “Where can I vote for Harris,” triggering an interactive map showing polling locations, while similar searches for “Where can I vote for Trump” did not yield the same result.

The issue as per the world's leading search engine has been “fixed”. However, responding to Google's post on X (formerly Twitter), many users reported that they were still facing the issue.

What's causing this?

Google, in a post on X, explained that the issue arose because “Harris” is also the name of a county in Texas, leading the algorithm to display polling locations in response to these searches.

“Happens for 'Vance' too bc [because] it’s also the name of a county,” it added.

In its statement, the tech giant clarified that the situation was an unintentional occurrence and noted that only a limited number of users search for polling places in this specific way.

US Election day mishap: Google glitch shows polling sites for Harris, not Trump; Tech giant says issue 'fixed'

The mood at the Kamala Harris watch party shifted significantly when results began to show a swing towards Donald Trump after he won some of the major states on Wednesday.

Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate who had planned an election night party at Howard University, did not speak at the event. Her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, told the demoralised audience that the current vice president will not speak tonight.

'Disqualifying,' Critics slam Trump as he makes insulting comments on Nancy Pelosi at Michigan rally

United States presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are fighting neck-to-neck in the elections and rallying the swing state voters.

However, in this battle for the White House, many are wondering if Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Harris will be able to hold the "blue wall".

What is the 'blue wall'?

The term 'blue wall' stands for the group of states which have voted for Democrats in the previous presidential elections till 2012.

This group of blue wall includes the District of Columbia and 18 states which have been the strongholds of Democrats for decades. These states are California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Maryland, Minnesota, Connecticut, Oregon, Maine, Hawaii, Delaware, Rhode Island and Vermont.

A major chunk of time during the election campaign has been spent by both the presidential candidates in the “blue wall” states.

History of blue wall breaches in US elections

The "blue wall" states remained committed to the Democratic Party in all the presidential polls from 1992 to 2012.

When Trump clinched a shocking victory in the 2016 elections, he flipped three "blue wall" states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. However, in the 2020 presidential elections, US President Joe Biden again turned these states into blue.

In 2024 presidential states, the three states flipped by Trump account for 44 electoral votes which is a major portion of the 93 electoral votes of the seven battleground states.

Watch: US Elections 2024: Security On High Alert Ahead Of The US Presidential Election

In the NYC/Sienna poll published on Sunday (Nov 3), Harris was narrowly ahead of Trump with 49 per cent of voters and in the states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, she was tied with Trump with 47 per cent and 48 per cent of voters, respectively.

If Harris clinches win in all the Democratic-leaning states and the three "blue wall" states, which once flipped, she will easily secure the 270 electoral votes required for the White House.

Also Read: When will counting of votes begin and when will final results be announced A major chunk of time during the election campaign has been spent by both the presidential candidates in the “blue wall” states. History of blue wall breaches in US elections The "blue wall" states remained committed to the Democratic Party in all the presidential polls from 1992 to 2012. Watch: US Elections 2024: Security On High Alert Ahead Of The US Presidential Election In the NYC/Sienna poll published on Sunday (Nov 3), Harris was narrowly ahead of Trump with 49 per cent of voters and in the states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, she was tied with Trump with 47 per cent and 48 per cent of voters, respectively. If Harris clinches win in all the Democratic-leaning states and the three "blue wall" states, which once flipped, she will easily secure the 270 electoral votes required for the White House. But, if Trump repeats history and breaches the Blue Wall again, he can become the country's next president. (With inputs from agencies)

What is the 'blue wall'? Will Trump be able to breach it and defeat Harris?

US Election 2024: Trump and Harris Make Final Appeals to Voters in Key Battleground States

#Gravitas Are opinion polls as big a hoax in America as in India and Britain which saw elections this year. With more than 77.6 m votes already cast, can Opinion polls reflect credible outcome?

US Elections 2024: Are Opinion Polls As Big A Hoax In America As They Were In India, Britain?

Not just English, but four other languages feature on the ballot papers for the upcoming US presidential elections. Among the four languages that feature on the ballot paper, the only Indian language to feature is Bengali.

The language options are available for voters in New York, often known as a melting pot of cultures, where over 200 languages are spoken across the city. The United States will vote to elect its 47th president on Tuesday.

“We are required to service four other languages besides English. These are Chinese, Spanish, Korean, and Bengali,” said Micheal J. Ryan, Executive Director of New York City’s Board of Elections.

Subhshesh, a sales agent in Times Square with Bengali heritage, feels happy as his father, who lives in Queens, will benefit from the linguistic support when casting his vote. “People like me know English, but many in our community prefer their native language. This will make things easier at the polling station,” says Subhshesh.

According to PTI, the presence of Bengali on New York’s ballots is not merely symbolic but a legal obligation. Under city regulations, Bengali voting materials are provided at certain polling sites in order to ensure that Bengali-speaking citizens have full access to crucial information and voting options. These include both Indian as well as Bangladeshi Bengalis.

Ryan explained the context of this decision, which resulted from a lawsuit focused on language access. “The settlement required that an Asian Indian language be available where population density is high, and Bengali was chosen after negotiations,” he noted. The choice, he acknowledged, has limitations but came from a mandate aimed at increasing accessibility.

The first appearance of Bengali-language ballots in Queens was back in 2013, nearly two years after a federal order, under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, mandated language assistance for South Asian minority groups.

The Bengali-speaking population in New York includes people from Asian countries like India and Bangladesh. While it doesn’t cover the full range of languages in the region, the addition of Bengali is expected to encourage voter turnout within this community, PTI reports.

Dr. Avinash Gupta, President of the Federation of Indian Associations, emphasised the importance of the initiative. “This helps the Indian community to go out and vote. That’s how our voices are heard. Indians are a sizable population here, and it’s heartening to see so many participate in the electoral process,” said Dr. Gupta.
Hours before the US presidential elections, the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump posted an AI-generated, Indianised image of the leader and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The Republican candidate can be seen eating at an Indian household in a new avatar as an Indian politician, with Melania Trump and Musk. Billionaire Musk was also tagged in the post and asked, “Which one looks original? @elonmusk?” The images were created by an Indian artist named Shahid SK, who made Trump and Vice-President Kamala Harris appear as Indian politicians. US Presidential Race: Harris, Trump Make Last Ditch Effort To Woo Voters

Following significant victories in recent years, including the pivotal 2020 presidential election and the 2021 Senate runoff, Georgia has emerged as a battleground state with shifting political dynamics.

US Elections 2024: Can Democrats Win Georgia Again?

As the 2024 US elections approach, Indian-Americans are emerging as a vital demographic influencing key races across the nation. With a growing population and increasing political engagement, this community is mobilizing to advocate for issues that matter to them, such as immigration reform, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

US Elections 2024: What's The Mood Of Indian American Voters?

The custom of holding US elections on Tuesday has its roots in the twentieth century, taking into consideration factors such as farming schedules, church attendance patterns, and many other sociological aspects that were dominant then. While, of course, these considerations have changed quite significantly, that part of the southeastern states still bears this tradition, as there were some historical reasons for making Tuesday a voting day.

Revelling in Culture and Practicality

In the early 1800s, the US was mostly a structured agricultural society. They did not have a big population, but most Americans were farmers who lived miles away from the poll centre, most of which were in the urban areas. Voting within these hinterland regions could take more than a day to get to the nearest grown-up voting place, even worse in return. In some religiously hardened societies, dominion was considered inappropriate as such days were reserved for worship; thus, it made no sense to conduct elections on Sunday. Furthermore, opinions were not held on Monday because it would require the citizens and the farmers to travel on a Saturday.

But still, it was also impossible to use a Wednesday because such a day was used by most men to go to the market and sell the produce. Therefore, this made Tuesday the most reasonable day. It was possible for the voters who wanted to vote to travel on Monday, vote on Tuesday and then return in time for the Wednesday market day or any other engagement.

The Date Determining Authority of Congress: A Brief Discussion

The tradition of holding presidential elections on a Tuesday was instituted in 1845 when Congress directed that Election Day be designated “on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November”. This measure was aimed at making sure that elections were held in all states at favourable periods and uniformity prevailed among states on the date of holding elections. November was perceived as the best month since it came at the end of the season in most states and before the onset of snowfall, giving a period when people could move about easily, especially the country folks.

Contemporary Perspectives and Proposals for Transformation

The days of the week were instituted in the State of Colorado as days on which it was acceptable to hold elections decades ago, mainly because of legal reasons that have nothing to say about the culture of the state concerned. Numerous suggestions have arisen regarding this concern, including moving the elections to the weekend and making it a public holiday due to the problems with participation since many citizens do not vote on working days. This Is because it would call for some legislative changes at the minimum and a change of culture.

Aware of Setbacks, Yet Unwavering in Their Devotion to the New Constitution

The fact that election day continues to be observed on a Tuesday reveals the extent of how practical issues of a different time still influence Americans' way of casting their votes. These historical elements might also seem useless as they belong to the past but are still fundamental in conducting elections, thus showing the relevance of previous practices to present-day society.

Sticking to Tuesday as a Dedicated Day for Election

Sticking to Tuesday as a dedicated day for elections has modern implications that mostly concern the level of participation of the people. Most people find it difficult to vote due to the working hours, restrictions in the hours of polling, and problems associated with transportation. This arrangement tends to depress, especially, the young voters who are poorly paid and work on an hourly basis, and hence there are likely to be fewer voters. Others even go a notch higher, calling for the shift of the election day to the weekend or declaring it as a public holiday to avoid long queues and ensure more people participate so that democracy gets better.

Proposed Alternatives and Ongoing Debates

In addition to Tuesday voting, some proposed alternatives include shifting the day of elections to the weekend, instituting a national holiday, and increasing mail-in or advance voting options. Proponents of this view contend that such changes would enhance access to the electoral process, particularly for individuals who have rigid working hours, and in turn increase turnout. Yet, the critics are worried about the practical implementation challenges, the costs that would be incurred, and the risks of prolonged election campaigning activities. The discourse revolves also around assessing the need for early voting practices and the issues of safeguarding election security and integrity in view of the proposed changes.
US Elections: Why do all elections take place on Tuesday of November’s first full week?

A tighter-than-ever U.S. presidential race is taking shape at the moment. We break down the key policies influencing the contest between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump. With both political parties eager to reshape the U.S. economy, we find out how the two candidates differ, and who will be best for American consumers and businesses. Will Kamala Harris be able to address the flaws in economic policies? Or will Donald Trump beat Ms. Harris on issues like inflation and unemployment?

Is Donald Trump or Kamala Harris Better for the Economy?

Donald Trump held his final rally in Macon, Georgia, on Sunday (Nov 2), where he drew a large crowd to the Atrium Health amphitheatre. Arriving an hour and a half late, Trump sported a black-and-gold "Make America Great Again" cap and stuck to his characteristic themes, including controversial proposals related to immigration and crime.

During the rally, Trump announced his intention to bring back the Alien Enemies Act of 1790.

What is the Alien Enemies Act of 1790?

The Alien Enemies Act of 1790 allows the US president to detain, relocate, or deport non-citizens from a country considered an enemy of the US during wartime. According to the Guardian, it has historically been used to relocate and detain Japanese, Italian, and German Americans during World War II.

Trump also suggested that he would pursue the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of killing Americans.
