Former United States President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign was warned not to take photographs at Arlington National Cemetery before the altercation, during a wreath-laying ceremony, reported the Associated Press (AP) citing a defence official, on Thursday (Aug 29).&nbsp;

Trump was invited to Arlington, a resting place for over 400,000 service members, veterans and their families, by some of the families of the 13 service members who lost their lives in the Kabul airport bombing three years ago.&nbsp;

The Republican presidential candidate&nbsp;has been facing severe criticism after he was seen giving a thumbs up and smiling pose in a photo at America's most sacred cemetery. Netizens have been reacting to the image since then.&nbsp;

“The fact is that a private photographer was permitted on the premises and for whatever reason, an unnamed individual, clearly suffering from a mental health episode, decided to physically block members of President Trump’s team during a very solemn ceremony,” he said.

US President Joe Biden is looking forward to talks with Xi Jinping in the "coming weeks", top White House aide Jake Sullivan told the Chinese leader on Thursday as they met for rare talks in Beijing.

Sullivan, the first US National Security Adviser to visit China since 2016, met Xi as he wrapped up three days of talks in Beijing, which also saw him sit down with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other high-ranking officials.

His visit came as China was embroiled in security rows with US allies Japan and the Philippines.

At a meeting with Xi in Beijing's ornate Great Hall of the People, he said President Biden "looks forward to engaging with you again in the coming weeks".

"President Biden is committed to responsibly managing this consequential relationship to ensure that competition does not veer into conflict or confrontation, and to work together where our interests align," he said.

Chinese state media said Xi told Sullivan that in spite of "great changes", China and the US could still enjoy good ties.

"China's commitment to the goal of stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations hasn't changed," Xi said.

"We hope that the US will work with China to meet each other halfway," he added, according to CCTV.

On Wednesday, Sullivan and top diplomat Wang discussed plans for their leaders to talk in the coming weeks.

They also clashed over China's increasingly assertive approach in disputed maritime regions.

<h2>Taiwan 'red line'&nbsp;</h2>

On Thursday morning, Sullivan met with senior Chinese army official Zhang Youxia at the Beijing headquarters of the Central Military Commission, where the two discussed Taiwan and other flashpoint issues.

"It's rare that we have the opportunity to have this kind of exchange," Sullivan told Zhang in opening remarks.

The officials agreed to hold a call between the two sides' theatre commanders "in the near future", a readout from the White House said.

Sullivan also raised the importance of "freedom of navigation" in the South China Sea, where China and the Philippines have clashed in recent months, and "stability" in the Taiwan Strait, Washington said.

Zhang, in turn, warned that the status of the self-ruled island was "the first red line that cannot be crossed in China-US relations".

"China has always been committed to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," he said, according to a readout by Beijing's defence ministry.

"But 'Taiwan independence' and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible," he said.

"China demands that the US halts military collusion with Taiwan, ceases arming Taiwan, and stops spreading false narratives related to Taiwan," Zhang added.

He also asked Washington to "work with China to promote communication and exchanges between the two militaries and jointly shoulder the responsibilities of major powers".

<h2>'Avoid miscalculation'&nbsp;</h2>

China has kept up its sabre-rattling since the inauguration this year of President Lai Ching-te, whose party emphasises Taiwan's separate identity.

Thursday's talks also saw Sullivan express "concerns about (Chinese) support for Russia's defence industrial base", the readout added -- echoing longstanding US claims that Beijing has rejected.

He also raised "the need to avoid miscalculation and escalation in cyberspace, and ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza", the White House said.

Sullivan's visit comes months ahead of US elections in November.&nbsp;

The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, would be expected, if she wins, to continue Biden's approach of seeking dialogue with China while also maintaining pressure.

Her Republican rival Donald Trump has vowed, at least rhetorically, to take a harder line, with some of his aides seeing a far-reaching global showdown with China.

As the United States continue to aid and support Ukraine in its war against Russia, Ukrainian officials will present US President Joe Biden's administration with a list of targets in Russia, in meetings this week, with an aim to press America for lifting restrictions on the use of their weapons against Moscow, a Ukrainian lawmaker told CNN.&nbsp;

Former United States President&nbsp;Donald Trump on Tuesday (Aug 27) blamed Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for the 13 July assassination attempt. Trump said the duo made it difficult for the Secret Service to protect him. The Republican presidential candidate&nbsp;made this claim on a television show, hosted by Phil McGraw. His remarks came after it was reported last week that several Secret Service agents were placed on administrative leave as an investigation continued.

“When this happened, people would ask, whose fault is it?” Trump told McGraw. “I think to a certain extent it’s Biden’s fault and Harris’s fault.

And I’m the opponent. They were weaponising government against me, they brought in the whole&nbsp;DoJ (Department of Justice) to try and get me, they weren’t too interested in my health and safety,” he charged.

The agency claimed that Crooks searched more than 60 times for information about the Republican presidential candidate and his then-rival, Democratic President Biden. (With inputs from agencies)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently stated that his troops' incursion into Russia's Kursk region is a key part of a broader victory plan that he intends to present to US President Joe Biden in September.&nbsp;

Speaking at a forum on Tuesday, Zelensky said the success of the plan would depend on President Biden and on whether the US would give Ukraine "what is in this plan or not, [and] whether we will be free to use this plan, or not".

He acknowledged that the plan might seem overly ambitious to some but emphasised its significance for Ukraine. He also mentioned that he intends to share the plan with both US presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Notably, a number of Ukrainian troops made an incursion into Russia's Kursk region in early August, and Russia has so far seemingly been unable to repel them.

Ukraine's&nbsp;top military commander, Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, said Kyiv&nbsp;now controls 1,294 sq km (500 sq miles) of Russian territory and 100 settlements.

Gen Syrskyi further said Ukraine had no aim of holding on to the territory and that one motivation for the incursion was to distract Russian&nbsp;forces away from their own offensive in eastern Ukraine. Russia is trying to capture the town of Pokrovsk, which is an important hub and home to a key railway station.

President Zelensky also revealed that recently, his military carried out the first successful test of a domestically-produced ballistic missile, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

While Ukraine has already used some ballistic missiles against Russia that were provided by the US, it has been working to develop the domestic production of military hardware to diminish its dependency on Western aid.

However, for now, Ukraine mostly relies on military supplies from abroad to fight Russia and repel its attacks.&nbsp;

For the past two nights, Russia has pummelled Ukraine with a barrage of drone and missile attacks which have left several people dead and caused blackouts in various areas of the country.

However, since the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, Russia has indicated that it is unwilling to engage in any peace negotiations with Ukraine.

The Biden administration has announced a significant investment in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, allocating USD 521 million in grants to expand the nation's EV charging network. This funding aims to install over 9,200 new EV charging ports across the United States, as reported by the Energy Department and Federal Highway Administration on Tuesday.

&nbsp;

The grant distribution is divided into two main categories. The first allocation of $321 million will support 41 community projects focused on enhancing EV charging infrastructure. The second portion, amounting to USD 200 million, is earmarked for 10 corridor fast-charging projects, which aim to facilitate long-distance EV travel along major highways.

&nbsp;

Among the beneficiaries, Milwaukee is set to receive USD 15 million for the installation of EV chargers at 53 different locations throughout the city. Atlanta will be granted USD 11.8 million to construct a DC Fast Charging Hub at the city's airport. This hub will feature 50 DC fast chargers, providing charging services for rental cars, ride-share drivers, and airport shuttles.

&nbsp;

Despite this announcement, the Biden administration has faced considerable criticism regarding the slow implementation of EV charging stations. This criticism stems from a USD 5-billion government program established in 2021 to accelerate the deployment of charging infrastructure. The pace of installation has been a point of contention, with automakers and industry stakeholders emphasising the crucial role of an extensive charging network in promoting widespread EV adoption, which is central to U.S. efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

&nbsp;

The White House has set an ambitious target of expanding the nationwide network of chargers to 500,000 ports. This plan includes the strategic placement of high-speed chargers at intervals no greater than 50 miles (80 km) along the country's busiest highways. As of August, the United States had approximately 192,000 public charging ports. Since the beginning of the Biden administration, the number of publicly available fast-charging ports has seen a significant increase of 90 per cent.

&nbsp;

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that approximately 1,000 new public chargers are being added weekly. However, this rate of deployment has still fallen short of expectations. In June, it was revealed that only seven EV-charging stations, comprising a few dozen charging ports in total, had been deployed under the 2021 U.S. program. This slow progress prompted harsh criticism from Senator Jeff Merkley, who described the situation as "pathetic" and "a vast administrative failure" during a hearing.

&nbsp;

Shailen Bhatt, who leads the Federal Highway Administration, expressed frustration with the slow deployment in June. He stated that the agency is actively collaborating with states to refine and implement their plans for EV charger deployment.

&nbsp;

The issue has also become a point of political contention, with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump repeatedly criticizing the slow pace of deployment.

&nbsp;

This recent funding announcement represents a renewed effort by the Biden administration to accelerate the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, addressing both the criticisms and the growing demand for accessible charging options as electric vehicle adoption continues to increase across the country.
