TikTok said on Tuesday it filed a federal lawsuit challenging a law signed by US President Joe Biden that would force the sale or ban of the social media app. Watch in for more details!

TikTok sues US to block potential ban

TikTok and its parent firm ByteDance on Tuesday (May 7) filed a legal challenge against the US targeting a bill signed by President Joe Biden that would push the app to either face a ban in the United States or to be sold.

The development comes almost two weeks after Biden passed a law giving the popular short-form video hosting service an ultimatum of 270 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the country.

TikTok argues that the bill signed by the US president was unconstitutional.

"For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than one billion people worldwide," said the suit by TikTok and ByteDance.

The lawsuit by the firm and the short-video sharing platform alleges that the move violates the First Amendment, charging that "Congress has made a law curtailing massive amounts of protected speech."

It further stated that the divestiture demanded for the short video app&nbsp;for it to be functional in the country is "simply not possible".

The suit was filed at a federal court in Washington.

<h2>'No plans to sell TikTok'</h2>

ByteDance has stated it has no plans to sell TikTok, renouncing the lawsuit, which is expected to go to the US Supreme Court, as its sole chance to avert a ban.

"There is no question: the Act will force a shutdown of TikTok by January 19, 2025," the lawsuit said, "silencing (those) who use the platform to communicate in ways that cannot be replicated elsewhere."

Earlier, TikTok CEO Shou Chew said in a video response that the company isn't going anywhere.&nbsp;

"Rest assured, we aren't going anywhere. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again," he said in the video&nbsp;posted on X.

Israel-Hamas war: US pauses shipment of bombs to Israel over Rafah concerns

The United States has halted the delivery of bombs to Israel due to concerns that it was planning to launch a full-scale attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.&nbsp;

According to a senior US official, the shipment included 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs.

The official, who asked to remain anonymous, on Tuesday (May 7) stated that the US was mainly concerned about the larger explosives and how they could potentially be used in a densely populated urban area.

Over one&nbsp;million civilians are currently sheltering in Rafah after being forced to evacuate other parts of Gaza due to Israel's conflict with Hamas.

The US has historically provided huge amounts of military aid for Israel. That has only accelerated in the aftermath of Hamas' Oct&nbsp;7 attack that killed some 1,200 in Israel and led to about 250 being taken captive by the militants.&nbsp;

The pausing of the aid shipment is the most striking sign of the growing daylight between Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and the White House.

Biden&nbsp;administration in April began to review future transfers of military assistance as Netanyahu’s government appeared to move closer to&nbsp;an invasion of Rafah, despite months of opposition from the White House.&nbsp;

The official said the decision to pause the shipment was made last week and no final decision had been made yet on whether to proceed with the shipment at a later date.

<h2>Israel secures Rafah crossing</h2>

On Tuesday, Israeli forces took control of the Rafah border crossing in Gaza, which the White House characterised as a limited operation that avoided the large-scale invasion of the city that President Biden had warned against on humanitarian grounds during his recent call with Netanyahu.

Israel has instructed 100,000 Palestinians to evacuate Rafah, while its troops conducted targeted strikes in the city's eastern areas and secured the Rafah crossing, a crucial route for humanitarian aid along the Gaza-Egypt border.

It is worth mentioning that last month, Congress passed a $95 billion security bill that included funding for Ukraine, Israel and other allies. The package included more than $14 billion in military aid for Israel.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration's report on whether Israel has breached US&nbsp;and international humanitarian law during the Gaza war has been postponed and will not be released on Wednesday (May 8), according to three Senate aides and one House aide, as reported by&nbsp;POLITICO.

The US and most European Union nations are boycotting the Kremlin ceremony to swear in Vladimir Putin for a new six-year term as president on Tuesday (May 7).

However, some other EU states and France were expected to send an envoy despite a plea by Kyiv.

The unreliable diplomatic reactions by Western powers underline the differences over how to handle Putin more than two years after he launched a complete offensive in Ukraine.

"No, we will not have a representative at Vladimir Putin’s inauguration," Matthew Miller, a US State Department spokesperson, said. "We certainly did not consider that election free and fair but he is the president of Russia and he is going to continue in that capacity."

Britain and Canada said they would not send anyone to attend the ceremony, which comes a day after Russia on Monday (May 6) announced it would hold tactical nuclear weapon&nbsp;drills that it said it hoped would cool down "hotheads" in the West.

Earlier, Putin won a landslide victory in a presidential election in March just weeks after his most prominent opponent, Alexei Navalny, died in jail. Western governments condemned the re-election as unfair and undemocratic.

"Ukraine sees no legal grounds for recognising him as the democratically elected and legitimate president of the Russian Federation," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

An EU spokesperson announced that the bloc's ambassador to Russia would not be attending the inauguration, reflecting the stance of most EU member states.&nbsp;

A European diplomat indicated that 20 EU countries planned to skip the event, while seven others, including France, were likely to send a representative. According to two diplomatic sources, Hungary and Slovakia were also expected to be present.

An American soldier has been arrested in Russia charged with stealing, according to two US officials.

The soldier, identified as&nbsp;Staff Sgt Gordon Black, will be detained until July, a court in Vladivostok said on Tuesday (May 7).&nbsp;

Black was previously positioned in South Korea.

He was en route back to Fort Cavazos in Texas, his home base.

However, authorities reported that he made an unexpected detour to Russia.

Cynthia Smith, an army spokesperson, confirmed that on Thursday (May 2), a serviceman was taken into custody in Vladivostok, a significant commercial and military hub on the Pacific coast, due to allegations of unlawful behaviour.

The Russian authorities informed the United States, and the military subsequently reached out to the soldier's relatives.

“The US state department is providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia,” Smith said.

The arrest of the US soldier comes less than a year after another American soldier Travis King sprinted into North Korea across the heavily fortified border between the Koreas.
