SpaceX's giant prototype rocket Starship on Thursday lifted off on its fourth test flight in an attempt to reach outer space and then back to Earth surviving the hot re-entry through the planet's atmosphere.

Notably, at the time of its previous attempt, the rocket broke apart during this crucial phase.

Starship, which is also the most powerful liftoff system ever built, embarked on its journey from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas at 7:50 am (1250 GMT).

"The payload for these flight tests is data," SpaceX posted on X. "Building upon what we achieved during Starship's third flight test, our primary goal today is to get through the extreme heat of reentry."

Starship, in its third test launch, burned up during its return trip to Earth. After a hiatus of seven months following its inaugural flight last April, SpaceX swiftly followed up with two more test flights in November and one in March.

Departing from Boca Chica, Texas, and traversing the Gulf of Mexico, the vessel's third flight completed a circumnavigation of our planet.

Unfortunately, communication was lost during the final phase of the test as it descended into the atmosphere.

The rocket this time is covered with several small black tiles that are specifically designed to safeguard the spacecraft from extensive heat encountered while making a re-entry into the earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speed.

"The main goal of this mission is to get much deeper into the atmosphere during reentry, ideally through max heating," Musk, CEO of SpaceX, wrote on social media on Saturday (Jun 1).

The company, led by entrepreneur and business magnate Elon Musk has been pushing the boundaries of space travel with its Starship project. Musk is aiming to revolutionise missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

SpaceX has also announced plans for lunar missions with its Starship vehicle, including the "Dear Moon" project, which intends to send artists and other private individuals on a lunar flyby mission.

Iran has condemned a decision by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors to pass a resolution criticising Tehran as ‘hasty and unwise’, Iranian State TV reported.

The UN nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation board of governors passed a resolution on Wednesday (June 5) calling on Iran to cooperate with it.

“The decision of the Western countries was quick and hasty, and it will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the course of diplomatic engagement and constructive cooperation between Iran and the opposing parties,” state TV cited Iran’s mission to the United Nations as saying.

Britain, France and Germany led the motion at the IAEA board, the first since November 2022, urging Iran to cooperate. However, China and Russia opposed.

The move comes amid an impasse over Iran’s escalating nuclear activities and as Western powers fear Tehran may be seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, a claim Iran has consistently denied.

The resolution passed with 20 votes in favour – including the United States, which initially was reluctant for fear of aggravating Middle East tensions – with 12 abstention and one country not participating, reported AFP news agency.

The censure motion aims to raise diplomatic pressure on Iran, with the option to potentially refer the issue to the UN Security Council.

Iran preemptively condemned the censure motion as lacking legal, technical, and political merit, threatening a strong response.

In the past, similar resolutions have provoked Tehran to retaliate by removing surveillance cameras and other equipment from its nuclear facilities and ratcheting up its uranium enrichment activities.

The IAEA has said that Tehran has significantly ramped up its nuclear programme and now has enough material to build several atomic bombs.

‘Strong and renewed message’

As per the IAEA, Iran is the only non-nuclear weapon state to enrich uranium to the high level of 60 percent – just short of weapons-grade – while it keeps accumulating large uranium stockpiles.

In a statement, Britain, France, and Germany (E3) emphasised the resolution's strong message backing the IAEA's efforts. They warned Iran that the international community will not tolerate actions that threaten the non-proliferation system and undermine safeguards designed to prevent nuclear proliferation.

“We hope Iran takes this chance to resolve these matters so that no further Board action is necessary.”

However, Iran has gradually broken away from its promises under the nuclear deal it struck with world powers in 2015.

The landmark deal provided Iran with relief from Western sanctions in exchange for curbs on its atomic programme, but it fell apart after the unilateral withdrawal of the US under then-President Donald Trump in 2018.

Efforts to revive the deal have so far failed.

Iran, along with Russia and China, in a joint statement urged Western countries to show political will and take the necessary action to resume the implementation of the 2015 deal, according to Iran's state news agency IRNA.

But the US rejected that claims, saying Iran refused an agreement when it was probable and “continued with activities that negated the chance for that deal, and now making baseless statements.

United States President Joe Biden, on Tuesday (Jun 4) said there is “every reason” for people to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prolonging the war in Gaza for his own political preservation. The remark has since drawn criticism from the Israeli government which accused the US president of straying from diplomatic norms.

‘Every reason to believe’

In an interview with Time magazine, published on Tuesday, when asked whether he thought Netanyahu was prolonging the war for political reasons, Biden said, “I’m not going to comment on that.” He added, “There is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.”

Notably, the Israeli PM’s popularity plummeted after Hamas launched its October 7 attack which took Israel by surprise and exposed serious flaws in the country’s security. However, a recent poll suggests otherwise and says Netanyahu is starting to regain his popularity.

The US president’s remarks were made during the interview on May 28 and came before he pitched a three-phase ceasefire plan to end the almost eight-month-long war in Gaza, on Friday (May 31).

Biden also told the magazine that it is “uncertain” whether Israeli forces committed war crimes in the Palestinian enclave.

The US president said that he had previously warned Israel not to make the same mistake that Washington made after the 9/11 attacks which led to “endless wars", adding that “they’re making that mistake.”

Biden, last week, called on the Israeli leadership to accept the deal and resist pressure from those who are pushing for the war in Gaza to go on “indefinitely".

“They want to occupy Gaza. They want to keep fighting for years and hostages are not a priority for them…I’ve urged leadership in Israel to stand behind this deal, despite whatever pressure comes,” he added.

Israeli government criticises Biden

When asked about the interview, Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer said it was “outside the diplomatic norms of every right-thinking country” for Biden to make such comments about Netanyahu.

Netanyahu’s popularity rises

Opinion polls since the October 7 attack indicate that while Israelis support the war in Gaza, they blame Netanyahu for the security failures, and would vote him out if there was an election.

Similarly, political analysts have indicated that the Israeli PM would lose if elections were held now.

However, a poll conducted by Israel’s Channel 12, on May 29, suggests that Netanyahu is starting to regain his popularity after struggling politically for more than a year. He even outpolled his main rival Benny Gantz for the first time since the beginning of the war.

When asked who was better suited to serve as PM, 36 per cent of the 500 Israeli voters who participated in the survey chose Netanyahu and 30 per cent supported Gantz.

The incumbent Israeli PM was also ahead of opposition leader Yair Lapid.

However, the poll, with a 4.4 per cent margin of error, seems to contradict the discontent observed in Israel as the country has been witnessing months of, often violent, protests with people calling on Netanyahu to resign.

The discovery of the fossil was announced by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, on Tuesday (Jun 4) which said that it will be studied and then be put on display later this month.

The trio was hiking through the Hell Creek Formation region which is known as the dinosaur capital of North Dakota because of its fossil-rich deposits. According to Lyon, the area “preserves Earth’s last dinosaur ecosystem” right before their extinction.

The bone that they stumbled upon may have been 67 million years ago.

“By going outside and embracing their passions and the thrill of discovery, these boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” said the palaeontologist

‘Completely speechless’

During the hike, Liam and his father noticed a large leg bone sticking out of the ground and called Jessin and Kaiden to come and see it, said the now nine-year-old, as quoted by Reuters.

“And dad asked, ‘What is this?’ And Jessin said, ‘That’s a dinosaur.’”

Fisher texted a picture to Lyson, his former classmate, who then obtained an excavation permit and nearly a year after the discovery in July 2023, everyone returned to the site.

According to the palaeontologist, he and Jessin, on the first day of the excavation had uncovered the lower jaw with “several big T. rex teeth sticking out of it”. He added, “It still gives me goosebumps.”

“I was completely, like, speechless,” said Kaiden.

Experts believe that the “Teen rex” was around 13 to 15 years old, 25 feet long, and weighed around 1,600 kilogrammes, two-thirds adult size.

Lyson, as per Reuters said having juvenile specimens helps reveal the Tyrannosaurus growth rate and body changes during maturation. Notably, there are only a handful of such fossils available.

The United States government's aggressive push towards all-electric vehicles (EVs) is facing scrutiny due to several unintended consequences that could impact the automotive industry and consumers alike. This move, driven by a mix of regulatory incentives and environmental goals, has hit several roadblocks, raising questions about its feasibility and long-term effects.

The automotive sector heavily relies on government regulations to shape its trajectory, especially in the context of EV proliferation. Government mandates and subsidies have encouraged automakers to pivot towards electric vehicles, aiming to meet stringent emissions standards and benefit from financial incentives. However, this transition has brought to light significant challenges that need addressing.

Economic and infrastructure challenges

One of the primary issues is the economic viability of EVs. While automakers have focused on larger SUVs and pickups to maximize profits and comply with emissions regulations, this has led to higher vehicle prices. Many households find these models unaffordable, exacerbating the problem of declining annual vehicle sales. EVs, despite their environmental benefits, face similar economic hurdles due to their high production costs and premium pricing.

Infrastructure also poses a significant challenge. The current state of electrical grids and charging infrastructures in many regions is inadequate to support a complete shift to EVs. Many EV owners struggle with limited charging options, particularly away from home. This lack of accessible and reliable charging infrastructure hampers the practicality of owning an EV as a household's only vehicle.

Declining fuel tax revenues and proposed solutions

Another unintended consequence of the shift to EVs is the potential loss of fuel tax revenues, which fund a substantial portion of roadway maintenance. As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, the traditional revenue model based on fuel taxes becomes less effective. Governments are considering alternative funding mechanisms, such as per-mile taxes on all vehicles or increased toll roads, but these proposals face resistance from motorists.

Industry response and legislative involvement

Sensing the shifting landscape, the automotive lobby is eager to influence the legislative process to ensure that new regulations consider the industry's needs. Automakers require significant lead times to develop and release new models, and sudden regulatory changes could disrupt their plans. The industry's involvement in legislative discussions is crucial to avoid unforeseen consequences that could affect production and profitability.

Internal industry conflicts

The push towards electrification has also highlighted rifts within the automotive industry. Some brands, like Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru, have opted to focus on hybrid vehicles, balancing regulatory compliance with consumer demand for traditional models. This approach contrasts with companies fully committed to EVs, creating competition and tension within the industry.

Dealerships, too, face challenges with the transition. Many states mandate franchised dealerships for vehicle sales, a model at odds with the direct sales approach popularized by Tesla. Dealers are also concerned about the impact of EV sales on their business, especially in states like California, which plans to mandate all new-vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2035.

Broader implications and future directions

The broader implications of the EV push extend beyond automakers to related industries. EV charging companies, for example, stand to benefit from legislation promoting charging infrastructure in apartment complexes, office buildings, and multi-family homes. Government grants have already been issued to support the installation of charging stations, but the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen.

Despite these challenges, the automotive industry has invested heavily in electrification. Many companies are on development paths that lock them into producing EVs for the foreseeable future. This investment pressure compels them to seek continued government support to achieve their goals, even if consumer demand and market conditions do not fully align with these ambitions.

The United States' push towards all-electric vehicles, while environmentally motivated, faces significant economic, infrastructural, and legislative challenges. The automotive industry must navigate these complexities to ensure a smooth transition. Continued dialogue between automakers, legislators, and consumers will be essential to address these issues and develop sustainable solutions for the future of transportation.
