Remembering Shaukat Kaifi: A look at her Bollywood journey

<p>Not many know, that Sa'aadat Hussain who later came to be known as Khayyam, had served in the Army during the Second World War before he came to Bombay to try his luck in movies. He had by then alreay assisted famous Punjabi music composer Baba Chisti in Ludhiana.&nbsp;<br />

In Bombay, Khayyam started of as Sharmaji of the Sharmaji-Varmaji composer duo and composed music for 'Heer Ranjha' in 1948. The composer had to go solo when his partner- the other half of Sharmaji-Vermaji- Rahman Verma moved to Pakistan post Partitiopn.&nbsp;<br />
Khayyam gained recognition from the film 'Phir Subha Hogi' starring Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha, in which songs written by Sahir Ludhyanvi and sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle were set to tune by Khayyam.&nbsp;<br />

While the composer gave music to innumerable films in the 1950s and 1960s, it is with yash Chopra's 'Kabhi Kabhi', that Khayyam rose to greater prominence. Teaming up with Sahir Ludhianvi for the film, the songs of the film featuring the then heartthrob of the nation Amitabh Bachchan, songs from 'Kabhi Kabhi' became a rage almost overnight.&nbsp;<br />

Khayyam tasted similar success when he composed soul stirring music for Muzaffar Ali's 'Umrao Jaan' in 1982. His work in the film fetched him the National Award for Best Music that year and gave the auidence classics like 'In Aankhon Ki Masti' and 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai'.&nbsp;<br />

Remembering Khayyam: 12 songs by the late composer which became classics

<p>Legendary music director-composer Khayyam famed for his compositions in films like `Kabhie Kabhie` and `Umrao Jaan` breathed his last on Monday evening. He was 92.&nbsp;<br />

The veteran, who was admittted to Sujay Hospital in Juhu last week, was in the intensive care unit (ICU) where he was in critical condition. He died at 9:30 pm in the evening.&nbsp;<br />

Tributes started to pour in as soon as news of the musician`s demise came in.Calling his demise "saddening", Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to extend his heartfelt condolences and express grief over the music icon`s death.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
"India will remain grateful to Khayyam Sahab for giving us some of the most memorable compositions, which will be remembered forever. He will also be remembered for his humanitarian gestures to support upcoming artists. His demise is extremely saddening," he tweeted.</p>

<p>Mohammed Zahur `Khayyam` Hashmi, better known as Khayyam, began his career in music from the city of Ludhiana at the tender age of 17. He got his first big break in blockbuster `Umrao Jaan` through which he made his permanent place in Bollywood industry.The musician was honoured with Padma Bhushan in the year 2011 and was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007.<br />
<br />
He won National Award, and also a Filmfare Award, besides a few other tributes for composing music for the movie which stars Rekha, Raj Babbar, and Naseeruddin Shah.<br />
<br />
Khayyam`s non-film songs are equally loved by his fans, especially `Paaon Padun Tore Shyam,` `Brij Mein Laut Chalo` and `Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade pe Aitbaar Kiya`.<br />
<br />
He also gave music for late Meena Kumari`s album, `I Write, I Recite` featuring `nazms` (poems) sung by her.&nbsp;</p>

He got his first big break in blockbuster `Umrao Jaan` through which he made his permanent place in Bollywood industry.The musician was honoured with Padma Bhushan in the year 2011 and was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007. He won National Award, and also a Filmfare Award, besides a few other tributes for composing music for the movie which stars Rekha, Raj Babbar, and Naseeruddin Shah. Khayyam`s non-film songs are equally loved by his fans, especially `Paaon Padun Tore Shyam,` `Brij Mein Laut Chalo` and `Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade pe Aitbaar Kiya`. He also gave music for late Meena Kumari`s album, `I Write, I Recite` featuring `nazms` (poems) sung by her.

<p>Born in a small village of Gujarat, Farooque Shaikh is known for his magnificent acting skills.</p>

<p>Shaikh was not only a proficient movie actor, his contribution to the world of television and theatre has also been equally appreciated.</p>

<p>He is remembered for his performances in films like Chashme Baddoor, Noorie, Shatranj Ke Khiladi and Umrao Jaan.</p>

<p>Shaikh made his debut in the year 1973 with MS Sathyu&#39;s &#39;Garam Hawa&#39;. Soon he gained fame with his acting skills as well as his impeccable comic timing.</p>

<p>He is also the recipient of the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 2010 movie &#39;Lahore&#39;.</p>

<p>Shaikh had also hosted a popular TV show Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai where he interviewed many Bollywood celebrities.</p>

<p>Shaikh died of a heart attack at the age of 65 in the year 2013, while he was holidaying with his family in Dubai. (ANI)</p>
