“We wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became ubiquitous and understand whether the type of mask had any effect,” Lewis said. &nbsp;

“Our study suggests faces are considered most attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now, we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel vulnerable, we may find the wearing of medical masks reassuring and so feel more positive towards the wearer,” Lewis added. &nbsp;

A large-scale international trial in the UK has led to the discovery of a 'game changer' drug for improving the health of people with obesity and could even play a major part in helping reduce the impact of diseases such as COVID-19.

According to a study published on Thursday in the 'New England Journal for Medicine', the drug, semaglutide, works by hijacking the body's own appetite regulating system in the brain leading to reduced hunger and calorie intake.

Over one third (35 per cent) of people who took the new drug for treating obesity lost more than one-fifth of their total body weight, according to the major global study involving University College London (UCL) researchers and almost 2,000 trial participants in 16 countries.

It was also found that three quarters (75 per cent) of people who received semaglutide 2.4 mg lost more than 10 per cent of their body weight and more than one-third lost more than 20 per cent.

The average participant in the trial lost 15.3 kg; this was accompanied by reductions in risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, such as waist circumference, blood fats, blood sugar and blood pressure and reported improvements in their overall quality of life.

The trial's UK Chief Investigator, Professor John Wilding from the University of Liverpool, said semaglutide is already approved and used clinically at a lower dose for treatment of diabetes, so doctors are already familiar with its use.

With evidence from the international trial, semaglutide has been submitted for regulatory approval as a treatment for obesity to the UK's National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"The first peer-reviewed analysis of the drop in carbon emissions during the COVID-19 lockdown has shown that daily emissions decreased by 17 per cent or 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide globally during the peak of the confinement on April 7, dropping to levels last observed in 2006. "Emissions from land transport accounted for almost half (43 per cent) of the decrease, while power generation accounted for 19 per cent, industry for 25 per cent and aviation for 10 per cent," it said. Lead author Professor Corinne Le Quéré of the University of East Anglia said, "Population confinement has led to drastic changes in energy use and CO2 emissions. According to the report, it is suggested that use of e-cigarettes portrays a better image of the user which could ultimately encourage people who had never smoked to try them. This could translate to becoming a&nbsp;nicotine habit that encourages users to smoke cigarettes in the coming years.&nbsp;

The report has also found that 9 per cent of 13 and 14-year-olds who had not tried e-cigarettes reported trying a tobacco cigarette a year later.&nbsp;However, among those who had tried an e-cigarette, the figure for tobacco use a year later rose to 34.4 per cent.

Th researchers wrote: &ldquo;We showed that ever&nbsp;use of e-cigarettes is associated with initiation of cigarette use; an effect that remains when controlling for various predictors of smoking. Our study in UK adolescents found patterns similar to those reported in longitudinal studies among adolescents aged 13 to 14 years and older in the USA.

&ldquo;A significant minority of adolescents try cigarettes first (19.9 per cent here) and later initiate cigarette use.

&ldquo;Our findings also indicated that the association between ever use of e-cigarettes&nbsp;and initiation of cigarette use was particularly strong among adolescents with no friends who smoked, a group usually considered to be less susceptible to smoking initiation.&rdquo;

However, they added: &ldquo;While acknowledging that a causal relationship may be plausible, we cannot confirm this, based on our findings and the trends observed over the same period in the UK.

&ldquo;Given the lack of clarity regarding the mechanism linking ecigarette and cigarette use, we need to be cautious in making policy recommendations based on our findings.&rdquo;

Some health experts believe that while this might be true, it also must be taken into consideration that those kids who try vaping are the ones who would in most likelihood, also try smoking and not necessarily in any order. They say that&nbsp;if e-cigarettes were acting as a &lsquo;gateway&rsquo; to tobacco for teenagers then smoking rates would be rising among that age group, but they are actually at an all-time low.&nbsp;
