Thousands evacuated
Across the island, more than 7,600 people were evacuated in the wake of Ragasa, according to government figures. Around 3,100 residents living near the Hualien creek had already been relocated ahead of the storm, many staying with relatives in safer areas. Officials said those precautions likely prevented an even higher death toll. Rescue operations are ongoing, and officials have warned that the number of casualties is likely to rise as more areas become accessible.
