The Delhi Police has sent a notice to micro-blogging site Twitter seeking details about steps taken by it against the circulation of child pornographic content on its platform, officials said on Wednesday.

A senior police officer said the notice was sent to Twitter on Tuesday.

He said the police have sought to know the steps taken by Twitter officials concerned against child sexual abuse content on their platform and sought details of the accounts circulating such material.

The Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Twitter for allegedly allowing access to child pornography on its platform following a complaint by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

The case was registered under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the IT Act, police said.

This comes days after the NCPCR, the country's apex child rights body, asked Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell) Anyesh Roy to explain why no action had been taken against Twitter as per its letter to the Delhi Police dated May 29.

In its letter, the NCPCR had asked the Delhi Police to book Twitter on the basis of the findings of its recent inquiry in which it had found that child sexual abuse material (CSAM) was easily available on the platform.

Twitter's&nbsp;latest move comes in the backdrop of its face-off with the Indian government over the new IT rules. The Delhi High Court has refused to stay the new IT rules which require compliance by social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to combat online abuse, misinformation and child pornography.&nbsp;

According to the amended rules, social media and streaming companies will be required to take down contentious content quicker, appoint grievance redressal officers and assist in investigations.

India abolished Article 370 and the special status to J&amp;K in August 2019 to fully integrate it with the rest of the country. J&amp;K was divided into two Union territories of Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Ladakh to aid social development in the region.

Twitter, however, has once again violated India's sovereignty by showing J&amp;K as a separate territory. It has even shown the Ladakh region as part of China, a country in which Twitter remains banned.

India's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information technology came out hard on Twitter on Friday&nbsp;asking the social media platform to follow the law of the land instead of dilly-dallying. The social media platform has not fully implemented the new IT rules that were announced in February.

The Parliamentary panel comprising of 21 MPs from Lok Sabha, and 10 from Rajya Sabha is led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Sources said the MPs&nbsp;cutting across party lines were "unanimous" in their call asking Twitter to comply with the new IT rules.

Today’s meeting of the committee was attended by Congress MP Dr&nbsp;Shashi Tharoor, along with MP Mahua Moitra from TMC, Nishikant Dubey and Rajyavardhan Rathor from the BJP among others.

Twitter representatives were seen as vague when the committee asked whether their company rules are important or the laws of India are important and tried to equate them. Sources pointed out that this was "not viewed positively" by the committee which "firmly told Twitter to follow the Indian laws."

The development comes even as Twitter has lost its intermediary status in the country over non-compliance of IT rules. This means it will be liable for third-party&nbsp;content or tweets on its platform.

The meet started at 4 pm(IST) at the committee room, Parliament house annexe.

The main agenda&nbsp;which was listed for the meet was to hear the views of representatives of Twitter on the subject "safeguarding citizens rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space".
