A new report has revealed that 86 per cent of the countries are slacking in the global fight against corruption amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The report, which is part of Transparency International’s annual corruption ranking, shows that nations are using the pandemic as an excuse to violate human rights.

Transparency International noted that Uruguay, with the highest score in Latin America, invests heavily in health care, which has helped its response to COVID-19, while low-ranked Bangladesh has seen corruption flourish during the pandemic.

It also said that countries with more corruption had shown the worst record on the rule of law during the crisis, including the Philippines, where it said the response to COVID-19 had brought major attacks on human rights and media freedom.

“The Philippines has continued its fall beginning in 2014 to a score of 33, as President Rodrigo Duterte has cracked down on freedoms of association and expression since his election in 2016,” said Transparency International.

“It also has an exceptionally high murder rate of human rights defenders, with 20 killed in 2020.”

The group said that 26 countries had significantly improved their scores since 2012, including Ecuador, Greece, Guyana, Myanmar and South Korea.

Delia Ferreira Rubio, who chairs the global civil society group, said the COVID-19 pandemic was also a corruption crisis.

“The past year has tested governments like no other in memory, and those with higher levels of corruption have been less able to meet the challenge,” she said in a statement.

The corruption perceptions index (CPI) was launched in 1995. It's data is collected from the &nbsp;World Bank, the World Economic Forum and 13 other sources.

The agency lists countries across the world on the "perceived levels of public sector corruption". On a scale of 0 to 100, it regards 0 as "highly corrupt" and 100 as "very clean".

Pakistan scored 28/100 to rank 140 in the list while tieing level with Myanmar. Denmark, Finland and New Zealand were ranked the least corrupt scoring 88 finishing on top followed closely by Norway, Singapore and Sweden who scored 85 points.

This is Pakistan's&nbsp;worst drop in these rankings since 2010. In 2010, Pakistan had registered its worst performance and was relegated to 146th rank.

The report&nbsp;noted that "as corruption efforts stagnate worldwide, human rights and democracy are also under assault" while asserting that the COVID-19 pandemic "is being used in many countries as an excuse to curtail basic freedoms".

The agency said 131 countries have made "no significant progress" against corruption in the last decade and "two-thirds of countries have scored below 50 "indicating that they have serious corruption problems".

The United States was ranked 27th with a score of 67. India was ranked 85th in the list scoring 40 points with no change in its ranking from the previous year. The Maldives too was ranked 85th on the list.

India's neighbour Bangladesh was ranked 147 with 26 points and Sri Lanka was ranked 102 as it scored&nbsp;37 points.

Afghanistan was ranked as one of the most corrupt finishing 174th in the list with a score of 16 along with North Korea and Yemen. Somalia and Syria were ranked at the bottom finishing 178 in the 180-nation list with South Sudan finishing last at 180 scoring 11 points.

Iran, Tajikistan and Guatemala finished 150th in the corruption index.
