Trade through the Nathu-La resumed on August 1 after being suspended in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The route will operate seasonally from May to November, with trading from Monday to Thursday under the existing list of approved commodities.

With an aim to increase trade and connectivity, India and Bhutan on Wednesday opened a new land trade route. The trade route will link West Bengal's Jaigaon with Ahlay, Pasakha in Bhutan.

Calling it a "step forward", Indian Envoy to Bhutan Ruchira Kamboj said," it will facilitate connectivities between our two countries in these COVID 19 times, further strengthening our special relationship."

Land Customs station has been opened at Ahllay, Pasakha by the Indian govt at the request of Bhutanese government as part of the new land route.

Indian envoy said,"Bhutan is India’s closest partner and friend and given the excellent bilateral relationship between our two countries and keeping in view as well the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, this access to Ahllay should further facilitate trade and commerce between our two countries.”

The new route for Pasakha Industrial Estate in Bhutan will decongest vehicular traffic along the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing route and boost bilateral trade &amp; commerce. It is especially beneficial for movement of heavy vehicles like trucks and industrial raw materials from India into Bhutan.

India is Bhutan's largest trading partner. The bilateral trade stood at Rs 9227 crores in 2018. Bhutan imports mineral products, machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipments, base metals, vehicles, vegetable products, plastics and articles from India. Afghan transit trade through Pakistan's Gwadar port became operational on Friday. This is the first sea trade between the two countries.

The first cargo ship berthed at the port on Friday.&nbsp;Adviser to Prime Minister for Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood announced the development on social media.

The trade commenced under the Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement-2010.

The transhipment of goods to Afghanistan through Gwadar port is important as the port is located close to&nbsp;Chabahar, the Iranian port being developed by India, with Iran's cooperation,&nbsp;to ship its cargo to Afghanistan.

This also offers a much shorter overland link particularly to southern regions of the war-torn nation.&nbsp;Gwadar port is being developed by China as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The advisor said that "for the first time, bagging will be done locally instead of foreign ports. Urea will be bagged and shipped on trucks to Afghanistan at Gwadar, which will generate employment for the locals."

Dawood further said that "instructions have already been passed to allocate all labour jobs to local population" of Balochistan.

Afghanistan will be allowed trade of sugar and wheat through this route. However, all the sealed consignments will have to take the route of the neighboring country.

In a blow to Pakistan, India on Thursday called off&nbsp;trade between J&amp;K and POK(Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) along the line of control(LoC).

The ministry of home affairs letter, procured by WION and dated April 18, 2019, said the trade is being misused by the Pakistan-based elements for funnelling illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency and called for a "stricter regulatory regime".

"The LoC mechanism is, therefore, being suspended pending the putting into place a stricter regulatory regime," the letter read.&nbsp;

This is to ensure that only bonafide trade takes place, for the benefit of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, through this mechanism," the letter added.

Further, MHA sources said "the main objective of allowing trade between J&amp;K and POK, was to encourage local trade and exchange of locally made and grown products."&nbsp;

Sources added that the&nbsp;facility was being misused by some influential local businessmen in nexus with unscrupulous elements to trade in products from third countries. Hence, the government has suspended the trade at Salamabad and Chakkan-da-Bagh in Jammu and Kashmir.

The trade is allowed through two Trade Facilitation Centres located at Salamabad, Uri, District Baramulla and Chakkan-da-Bagh, District Poonch. The trade which takes place four days a week is based on the barter system and zero duty basis.

In an ongoing investigation by the National investigation agency (NIA), MHA said, "persons closely associated with banned terrorist organizations involved in fuelling terrorism/separatism" have been involved in the trade.

MHA said, some individuals, who have crossed over to Pakistan, and joined militant organizations have opened trading firms in Pakistan and these trading firms are engaged in the LoC trade.

Meanwhile, sources also said that a stricter regulatory and enforcement mechanism was&nbsp;being worked out. The issue of reopening of cross-border&nbsp;trade would be&nbsp;revisited thereafter.

The cross LoC trade was started in 2008 as part of Confidence Building Measures by India and Pakistan for trade between Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) for 21 agreed items on the barter system, on zero duty basis, through Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch- Rawalakote routes.

Initially, the trade was allowed for 2 days per week but later, upon an increase in the volume of trade, trading days was increased to 4 days per week.
