'Attacker threatened to kill himself' Speaking to Reuters, a nearby resident said that people tried intervening (in the matter) but the attacker kept on threatening to kill himself with a blade to his neck and to his wrist. The Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, which includes federal and state police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the country's main domestic spy agency, and the New South Wales Crime Commission, which specialises in extremists and organised crime, were also questioning five other teenagers late Wednesday.

Over 400 police officers executed 13 search warrants in southwest Sydney because they believed the suspects presented a threat. Deputy Commissioner David Hudson of the New South Wales Police Department told reporters, "We will allege that these individuals adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology."

On Friday, thousands of Muslims across Sydney went for regular prayers amid fears of retaliatory attacks. The footage of the incident shows the boy being restrained by the congregation and shouting at Emmanuel for insulting Islam.

The attack on Monday night sparked protests and hours later, one of the largest mosques in Australia, Lakemba mosque, also received fire bomb threats.

On Thursday, the police said that Dani Mansour, 19, was charged with rioting, affray and destroying or damaging property. He was the first person to be charged after the unrest.&nbsp;

The attack sparked protests outside the church as hundreds gathered to express their anger.

Bishop Emmanuel has a large following on social media, with over 17,000 followers on Facebook. The church’s YouTube channel has almost 200,000 subscribers.

The church in a statement later said&nbsp;a priest, Father Isaac, was also injured. He, along with the bishop, was immediately rushed to the hospital.&nbsp;

"We ask for your prayers at this time," the church said.

"We also kindly ask anyone at the Church premises to leave in peace", it added.

Local Mayor Frank Carbone urged people to maintain calm and not create a law and order situation.&nbsp;

"I understand a lot of members in our community are really distraught but what is important is I believe that the bishop has been taken to hospital and should be okay," he was quoted as saying by Sky News Australia.

The motive of the attack is not known yet.

Indian couple, Shoi Ghoshal and her husband, Debashis Chakrabarty, recounted their harrowing experience in a conversation with a Western media outlet. The duo detailed to BBC how they sought refuge in a backroom in a bid to fortify themselves with cardboard boxes alongside dozens of others.

Ghoshal also described the initial confusion within the store. She said that there were sounds of commotion leading to the realisation of a grave threat. But they thought it was a fire at the shopping hub.&nbsp;

But she recalled “people were saying someone is stabbing rampantly”. “We went into a backroom, a storeroom, and used boxes to barricade ourselves in,” she added.

As per Ghoshal, there were about 20 to 25 people who were seeking cover at the storeroom. As they huddled together, Ghoshal recounted the anguish of an elderly woman separated from her husband outside.

Amid distress, the group maintained contact with authorities. Later, they received instructions to remain calm and await rescue. They were eventually evacuated through the emergency exit. Upon their exit, they saw many police cars positioned there.

“It was just beyond horrible. It plays on your mind that you could have been one of the victims. We are grateful we are safe and our thoughts are with those who have suffered. It is terrible for their families,” she told the outlet.

The country is in shock over the incident.
