<p><strong>Why did protests erupt</strong></p>

<p>The protests were carried out by activists of the All India Act Apprentice Association (AAAAA). It demanded to scrap of the 20 per cent quota for direct recruitment and jobs for local candidates in all states who have cleared the All India Railway Act Apprentice Exams.</p>

<p>They claimed they had taken up their demands right up to the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal who met them but there was no progress in the matter.</p>

<p>They claim that until now everyone used to be included in Group D but now they have fixed at 20% quota which was mainly for the new lot. The protesters claimed that they went on a protest at Delhi and Bhusawal, previously.</p>

<p><strong>What Central Railway says</strong></p>

<p>A Central Railway spokesperson said that there was no provision of giving the job to apprentices as per the Apprentice Act who are only trained for a specific period to hone their skills and gain experience.</p>

<p>&quot;Stating that the notification is already issued with the last date of submitting an application as 31.3.2018. Apprentices can apply against this notification and Special Examination will shortly be held for Apprentices who have done training in Railway Workshops under Apprentices Act.&quot; Central Railway said.</p>

<p>The Railways has set a target of training 30,000 apprentices at its 17 zonal and seven production units in 2018-19, as part of the government&#39;s Skill India initiative.</p>

<p>Apprentice training comprises basic and on-the-job training/practical training. Basic training is an essential component of apprenticeship for those who have not undergone any institutional training before taking up on-the-job and practical training.</p>

Rail roko protests in Mumbai called off, local train services resume

<p>Protesting against the confusion surrounding railway recruitment, students stopped trains on Central Railway during the peak hours on Tuesday.</p>

<p>More than 500 students working as apprentices in different technical workshops of Railways staged a rail roko on the Central Railway (CR) Line, demanding permanent jobs. Due to this, trains between Kurla and Dadar stations remain suspended.</p>

<p>According to senior railways officials of the Central Railways, the students have stopped traffic since 7 am. Officials said they are running special trains for Kurla station in the down direction and diverting railway traffic from Dadar station in the up direction to facilitate commute.</p>

<p>Entire four lines are affected between Matunga and CSMT. Police and railway official are having talks with them, the official said.</p>

<p>The Central Railways issued a helpline number 020-23061763 and a local emergency helpline number 020-23004000 to help those seeking information about the movement of trains vis-a-vis the ongoing protest by the job seekers.</p>

<p>As per latest information, at least 60 trains are said to be either running late or cancelled due to the agitation. Trains are, meanwhile, running between Kurla from Karjat/Kkasara and the passengers are allowed to travel on Harbour line.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;There has been no recruitment since last four years. We are struggling from pillars to post. Over 10 students have committed suicide. We cannot let such things happen,&quot; a student who was part of the protest said.</p>

<p>&quot;We will not budge from here until and unless Railway Minister Piyush Goyal come and meet us. Our several prayers made to DRM (Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Division) have failed,&quot; another student said.</p>

<p>&quot;Mumbai police along with GRP and RPF jawans are having talks with the students and railway&#39;s first priority was to clear the track first,&quot; Chief PRO of Central Railway Sunil Udasi said.</p>
