A judge in London, on Thursday (Feb 1) threw out a lawsuit by Donald Trump over a dossier which alleged ties between the former United States president’s campaign and Russia. The lawsuit included accusations against a former British spy of making “shocking and scandalous claims” which Trump said were false and harmed his reputation.

London High Court Judge Karen Steyn moved to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Trump against British private investigations firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, saying, “There are no compelling reasons to allow the claim to proceed to trial.”&nbsp;

She also wrote that the data protection claim was “bound to fail” and threw out the former president’s demand for compensation based on it. Trump sought damages from the Orbis founded by Christopher Steele for allegedly violating British&nbsp;data protection laws.

However, Steyn, in her ruling said that the claim for compensation by Trump had “no reasonable grounds” and that he had “chosen to allow many years to elapse – without any attempt to vindicate his reputation” in the UK courts since the dossier came out.

<h2>What were the ‘scandalous claims’?</h2>

The ruling delivers another blow to Trump who is running for the 2024 presidential election while dealing with his many legal woes, including four separate criminal prosecutions, in the US.&nbsp;

In 2016, Steele’s firm created a dossier which contained rumours and uncorroborated allegations that sparked a political storm just before Trump’s inauguration, in January 2017.&nbsp;

The so-called Steele dossier alleged ties between Trump and Moscow saying that the former president has been “compromised” by the Russian security service, FSB.&nbsp;

The dossier based on unverified information also said that Moscow had damning videotapes of Trump with prostitutes during a 2013 trip to the Russian capital.&nbsp;

According to a witness statement made public in October, Trump said he brought the case to prove claims in the Steele dossier that he engaged in “perverted sexual acts” in Russia, are false.

Steyn, in her ruling, noted that Trump said the allegations are untrue, adding that “I have not considered, or made any determination, as to the accuracy or inaccuracy of the (allegations).”

Trump’s lawyer, Hugh Tomlinson at the hearing also claimed the former president “suffered personal and reputational damage and distress” because his data protection rights were violated.

Meanwhile, Orbis argued that Trump brought the claim simply to address his “longstanding grievances” against the company and Steele and should be thrown out since the report was never meant to be made public.&nbsp;

The British firm also said that the dossier was published by BuzzFeed without the permission of Steele or Orbis and that Trump filed the claim too late.&nbsp;

Former US president Donald Trump, who is mired in a string of litigations, has sued a former British spy and his intelligence firm in a UK court.

The case has been filed against Orbis Business Intelligence and its founder Christopher Steele, a former MI6 spy who had claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin “supported and directed” an operation to “cultivate” Trump as a presidential candidate for “at least five years”.&nbsp;

<h2>Hearing to begin on Oct 16</h2>

The hearing will begin on October 16 and will last for two days, the court order published on Thursday (Sept 28) stated, according to PA news agency.

No other details of the case have been made available except that Trump has brought a data protection claim against Steele, who was the head of the Secret Intelligence Service’s Russia desk.

It is understood that the Republican presidential contender&nbsp;would not attend the hearing.

Steele was the author of the so-called Steele dossier, which was leaked to BuzzFeed in 2017 alleging links between Trump and the Russian security service, the FSB.

The dossier claimed that Trump was compromised by the FSB, and also alleged that the Russians may have held compromising information over Trump in the form of videos showing him engaged in salacious activity in a Moscow hotel.

Trump has denied the claims.

<h2>Steele dossier&nbsp;</h2>

According to reports, Orbis Business Intelligence was hired by Washington DC strategic group Fusion GPS to gather information on Trump, which many believed was commissioned by Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

In 2019, Steele during his deposition said that his findings were for the benefit of private clients, not media organisations, according to CNN.

Steele and his Orbis Business Intelligence were previously sued for libel by Russian national Aleksej Gubarev&nbsp;over the publication of the dossier, claiming they were legally responsible for BuzzFeed publishing the dossier.

Michael Cohen, the attorney of Trump at that time, also sued BuzzFeed over its failure to verify findings in the “fake” report.

He later dropped that defamation suit in April 2018 when he became the target of an FBI investigation involving questionable dealings with Trump.

The document&nbsp;claimed there was misconduct, conspiracy, and cooperation between former United States president Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the Russian government before and during the 2016 election campaign.&nbsp;

The document&nbsp;is basically a collection of&nbsp;allegations.&nbsp;The report is compiled by retired British spy Christopher Steele, whose research was indirectly funded by Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2016.&nbsp;
