Hwang was always determined to win an extra treat and remembers employing multiple tactics in his efforts, including licking the candy to loosen the shape and using a needle heated over briquettes -- techniques repeated in the show's nail-biting dalgona challenge scene.

"I would make the dalgona maker extremely perplexed by succeeding on the most difficult shape of umbrella," the director recently said in a YouTube video. &nbsp;

But the candy was a difficult prop to manage on set as it softens easily, especially during South Korea's humid rainy season, so Hwang and&nbsp;artistic director Chae Kyung-sun hired&nbsp;"dalgona experts"&nbsp;to have the candy freshly made on location.

Those specialists were Lim Chang-joo and his wife Jung Jung-soon, who produced between 300 and 400 dalgonas over three days of filming.&nbsp;

Now, their humble roadside stall in Seoul's theatre district -- little more than an umbrella, an awning and their equipment -- is one of the hottest spots in the South Korean capital.

Orders for the 2,000-won (about $1.70) sweets start piling up as soon as it opens, and before long, customers face six-hour waits, with some giving up and leaving empty-handed.

In about 90 seconds, Lim melts an individual portion of sugar above a burner, before adding baking soda, flattening it into a circle, and punching it with the customer's preferred shape.

"Of course, I'm happy because my business is doing well and how dalgona has become famous in other countries.&nbsp; "I hope they make and eat their own dalgonas," he added.

Squid Game has become a phenomenon. The riveting Korean drama has become somewhat like a renaissance for the genre&nbsp;that has a fanbase all over the world. Well yes, BTS and Psy have been making major waves in&nbsp;music but Korean drama still commanded a niche audience.

Squid Game has changed that. The weird, at times whimsical series shocks you, keeps you on the edge of the seat and even makes you cry at times.

Amid all this, viewers have been able to pinpoint an aspect which, though not a dampner, may put Squid Game in the list of series depicting South Asians in a stereotypical light.

The character in question is Abdul Ali (A&nbsp;Pakistani played by Indian actor Anupam Tripathi).

Ali has a dishevelled appearance. Works in a factory. Has migrated to Korea to earn more money. He is not a man who you would call confident. He bows to other Korean characters again and again. Though this appears to be out of respect, it has hints of subservience.

To his credit, several characters tell him to stop calling them 'Sir' and to just use their actual names to address them. But Ali faces questions from another character that in effect enquires 'Do you even have a Korean visa?'

Ali's presence is a delight for a South Asian eye (and ear) as he occasionally breaks into Urdu/Hindi, that too in a Korean series. This may be a temporary relief for viewers who don't prefer subtitle-heavy viewing.

But Ali is expendable, he can be easily manipulated. He can be tricked easily. He is poor, heavily in debt and sight of money makes him bow repeatedly to other Korean characters.

It cannot be denied that there may be people fitting this description across Indian subcontinent. But continued representation of this ethnicity in such a light remains a persistent issue. This, even when South Asians or people with such a heritage have conquered heights globally. US Vice-President Kamala Harris is the latest example.

After all these years,&nbsp;depiction of South Asians in popular media is still far from reality.

The Korean drama, which has caught the attention of viewers worldwide, is a nine-part series that revolves around 450 contestants playing to win a jackpot amount. The contestants are all poor and in dire need of money. Six games are arranged for the participants to play. While the ones clearing the games move forward, those who fail to complete the tasks die. 'Luck' directed by Soham Shah, also followed a similar theme and Bollywood fans couldn't help but draw a comparison between the two. “If you want to see the difference between Bollywood and foreign movies/ television series, Then watch ‘squid games’ Korean drama.
