Spain has just endured what its national weather agency is calling the most intense heatwave on record. The 16-day scorcher this month shattered temperature records, fueled deadly wildfires and claimed hundreds of lives across the Iberian peninsula.

Areas of southern Spain such as Seville and Cordoba have registered temperatures of up to 44 Degrees as the country experiences its first heatwave of the summer.

According to Spain's weather agency, the Spanish coast would be 3°c to 4°c hotter until at least mid-August. Scientists have warned that high temperatures across Europe have unleashed a prolonged marine heatwave in the Mediterranean sea, which could ravage ecosystems and kill off several species in the coming weeks.
