The revellers watched the sun rise at&nbsp;08:09 GMT, beginning the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

People played musical instruments,&nbsp;sang and took pictures of the rising sun.

Only under eight hours of sunlight will be there on Wednesday, English Heritage said, which protects the historical site.

A participant from South Africa said,&nbsp;&quot;I am from South Africa, I came for the solstice, especially for the solstice. I am a Pagan, a witch and this is about the best place to be.&quot;.
