Equity indices tracked their global peers and closed deep into the red on Wednesday as effects of coronavirus outbreak reverberated beyond China.

Profit-booking accelerated with automobile and metal sectors bearing the brunt as market undertone remained weak since opening following fears of deepening adverse economic impact of coronavirus pandemic.

The BSE S&amp;P Sensex closed 392 points or 0.97 per cent lower at 39,889 while the Nifty 50 was down by 119 points to 11,679.

All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the negative zone with Nifty auto skidding by 2.15 per cent, realty by 1.67 per cent, metal by 1.63 per cent, pharma by 1.25 per cent.

Among stocks, Sun Pharma was down by 3.8 per cent at Rs 374 per share while Hindalco and Vedanta dipped by 2.6 per cent and 1.9 per cent respectively.

GAIL plunged by 5.1 per cent to close at Rs 108.15 per share.

Tata Motors and Maruti lost by 3.6 per cent and 2.4 per cent. Grasim, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Infosys too traded with a negative bias.

However, Yes Bank jumped by 4.98 per cent to wind up the day at Rs 36.90. State Bank of India, HCL Technologies, Bharti Infratel and Britannia showed marginal gains.

Meanwhile, Asian shares fell as a US warning to Americans to prepare for the possibility of a coronavirus pandemic drove another Wall Street tumble.

That led Japan`s Nikkei to fall by 0.79 per cent following growing concerns the virus could cancel the Tokyo Olympics. Chinese shares fell by 0.83 per cent while South Korea`s Kospi dropped by 1.28 per cent.

India and the United States were making progress on trade, energy and military deals, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd was the biggest gainers on the Nifty, rising 1.93 per cent, while Dr.Reddy's Laboratories Ltd was the major laggard, falling 2.81 per cent. The Nifty is off 5.1 per cent from its lifetime high hit on January 20, weighed down by the coronavirus outbreak and a lacklustre union budget.

The gains in banking and IT sector ensured that Indian markets closed on a high on Thursday.&nbsp;

The BSE Sensex rose 170.42 points or 0.42 per cent to close at 40,286.48, while NSE Nifty accumulated 31.65 points or 0.27 per cent to end at 11,872.10 points.&nbsp;

In the 30-share index, IndusInd Bank and ICICI Bank were the major gainers as their shares rose by 2.79 and 2.67 per cent respectively. The other gainers among the Sensex pack were Infosys, TCS, Yes Bank, Axis Bank and Bajaj Auto, among others. Vedanta Ltd was the biggest loser in the BSE Sensex with a drop of 2.90 in its share value during the day.&nbsp;

ICICI Bank was the biggest gainer in the Nifty 50 with a jump of 2.53 per cent in its share value. The other winners in NSE Nifty were Infosys, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Maruti, HDFC, ITC, Cipla, among others. Infratel, IndusInd Bank and Vedanta Ltd were the major losers in Nifty pack.

The investors' sentiments were affected after Moody's Investors Service on Thursday slashed India's economic growth forecast to 5.6 per cent for 2019, saying that government actions do not address the widespread weakness in consumption demand.

The markets also took cues from the Indian government which announced on Wednesday that retail <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indias-october-retail-inflation-rises-to-462-per-cent-261864">inflation rate </a>rose by 4.62 per cent in October. The inflation rates were higher than the earlier forecasts and breached the Reserve Bank's target of 4 per cent. Earlier on November 11, data revealed 
that India's industrial output shrank 4.3 per cent in September.

Telecom stocks also followed a downward trend with Vodafone Idea slipping 19% and Bharti Airtel Ltd closing nearly one percent lower. Both the companies are likely to report quarterly results later in the day.

Elsewhere in Asia, mixed trends were witnessed.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the 30-share-index closed at 40,116.06 points, while the Nifty 50 ended with 11,840.45 points.

Indian markets close higher; Banking, IT lead gains

Equity benchmark indices ended in the green on Monday but last hour selling pressure erased all intra-day gains.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/sensex-up-by-200-points-in-early-trade-nifty-over-11000-243977">BSE S&amp;P Sensex</a> closed 52 points higher at 37,402 while the Nifty 50 was up by six points to 11,054.

At the National Stock Exchange, sectoral indices were mixed with IT, media, pharma, private banks, and realty in the positive zone.

Among stocks, Sun Pharma was the top gainer with a margin of 2.7 per cent at Rs 426 per share while Tech Mahindra was up by 2.2 per cent.

The other prominent gainers were Axis Bank, Bharti Infratel, Titan, Hindalco, Wipro, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries.

However, Yes Bank was down by 3.3 per cent and closed at Rs 76.80 per share. Grasim, Indiabulls Housing Finance, GAIL, and Coal India lost between 1.5 and 1.6 per cent each.

Meanwhile, Asian stock markets tracked the Wall Street's Friday rally on hopes of more stimulus from central banks around the world to prevent a global recession.

In China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 2.1 per cent while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 1 per cent.

South Korea's KOSPI advanced 0.6 per cent and Japan's Nikkei rose 0.7 per cent.

The Hang Seng index rose by 2.27 per cent as Hong Kong geared up for more anti-government protests later this week.&nbsp;

In a sign of derailment of trade talks between the two global economic powers the US and China, US President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened to hike tariffs on USD 200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Reacting to the news, Chinese bourses sank led by Shanghai Composite Index that plunged 5.58 per cent. European equites were also trading significantly lower in early trade.

After plunging 453 points intra-day, the BSE Sensex settled 362.92 points, or 0.93 per cent, lower at 38,600.34.

The broader NSE Nifty closed 114 points, or 0.97 per cent, down at 11,598.25.

In the Sensex pack, Yes Bank, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, HDFC twins, IndusInd Bank, RIL, Asian Paints, Hero MotoCorp, Axis Bank, M&amp;M, HUL, Bajaj Auto, NTPC, HCL Tech, Kotak Bank and Infosys fell up to 5.30 per cent.

Bucking the negative market trend, ITC, TCS, Bharti Airtel and ONGC ended in the green.

According to traders, domestic market turned jittery after Trump's surprise move spooked global investors.

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump said he would raise import taxes on USD 200 billion in Chinese products to 25 per cent from 10 per cent on Friday.

Despite Trump's announcement, China's top trade envoy is preparing to travel to the US to resume talks on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equity worth Rs 400.68 crore on Friday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased shares to the tune of Rs 57.07 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

The rupee depreciated 19 paise to 69.41 against the US dollar intra-day.

Sensex crashes 363 points as US-China trade talks derail

Indian shares ended higher on Thursday as IT stocks such as Infosys Ltd and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) gained on the back of a weaker rupee.

The broader NSE Nifty closed 0.8 per cent higher at 10,513.85 while the benchmark BSE Sensex ended 0.93 per cent stronger at 34,663.11.

Nifty IT index ended 2.31 per cent higher with Infosys gaining 2.96 per cent and TCS firming up 3.31 per cent.
