Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has captured detailed satellite images of the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025, the world's largest religious gathering, in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj.
The images released by ISRO show the extensive infrastructure, including the layout of tent cities, roads, and numerous pontoon bridges constructed at the Triveni Sangam.
The images have been captured by EOS-04 (RISAT-1A) ‘C’ band microwave satellite, with its all-weather capability and fine resolution (FRS-1, 2.25 m).

Further, the time series images captured by the satellites showed the construction of Shivalay Park, which is spread across 12 acres of land.
Shivalay Park is an India-shaped park in Prayagraj and is a major attraction of Maha Kumbh.
However, the images captured on three separate dates show the construction of the landmark.

The combined time-series images from September 15, 2023, and December 29, the satellite highlights the event's development.
Moreover, three-time series images also showed the Prayagraj Sangam and the zoomed section of the River Ganges showing temporary pontoon bridges.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared some of these images on X, saying, "The Indian Space Research Organisation has released stunning images of the Maha Kumbh Mela as seen from space."
Dr Prakash Chauhan, Director of the NRSC, explained, “The radarsat was used as it could image the region through the cloud band that enveloped Prayagraj.”

MahaKumbh to outshine Oktoberfest, Rio Carnival

The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is set to surpass some of the largest global events, including Rio Carnival, Germany's Oktoberfest, and Haj.
The Maha Kumbh 2025 is expected to witness over 450 million devotees, including 1.5 million foreign tourists, according to the government.
According to UP government officials, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 surpasses the Rio Carnival’s 70 lakh visitors, Oktoberfest’s 72 lakh, and the 25 lakh attendees of Haj.
Moreover, the attendance numbers of the devotees are also projected to surpass the combined populations of major countries like the US and Canada.

Japan's unmanned Moon lander has reactivated after encountering its second cold, two-week lunar night, and has sent back new images to Earth, according to Japan's space agency on Thursday (Mar 28).

"We received a response from SLIM last night and confirmed that SLIM had successfully completed its second overnight," the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said in a post on its official X account about the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) probe.

"Since the sun was still high in the sky last night and the equipment was still hot, we recorded images of the usual scenery with the navigational camera, among other activities, for a short period of time," it added.

Formerly posted on X, a grayscale image capturing the rough terrain of a crater accompanied the update on the SLIM mission, shared via a platform similar to Twitter. The SLIM lander's touchdown in January happened at an unexpected angle, misaligning its solar panels.

Despite this roadblock JAXA marked Japan as the fifth country to achieve a lunar landing.

Subsequently, in late January, as the sun's position shifted, SLIM reawakened for a brief period, using its high-spec camera to conduct scientific observations.

However, the harsh lunar nights, with temperatures dropping to minus 133 degrees Celsius, presented a challenge as SLIM was not made to withstand such conditions.

The successful revival of the spacecraft in late February brought relief to JAXA scientists, earning SLIM the nickname "Moon Sniper" for its smooth landing capabilities.

Recent satellite measurements have revealed the thickness of the colossal iceberg A-23a, the largest in the world, standing at just over 280 metres.

With a massive area of 3,900 square kilometres and a weight of approximately a trillion tonnes, this iceberg, which broke off from the Antarctic coastline in 1986, has recently become mobile after being grounded in the Weddell Sea for over three decades.

The measurements of A-23a originate from the European Space Agency's CryoSat-2 mission, using a radar altimeter to detect the portion of the iceberg above the waterline.

This technology, according to Dr Anne Braakmann-Folgmann from the University of Tromso, enables the monitoring of iceberg thickness and the impact of warmer ocean waters on its structure.

From grounded to drifting

After three decades affixed to the ocean floor, A-23a has entered a pivotal phase in its journey.

Breaking free from its stationary position, it is currently drifting toward warmer waters.

Researchers say that the forthcoming weeks will be critical in determining the iceberg's trajectory across the Southern Ocean.

CryoSat data indicates a specific section of A-23a with a deep keel, exhibiting a draft of almost 350 metres in 2018. Over the last decade, there has been a consistent annual decrease in thickness, aligning with the warmer water temperatures in the Weddell Sea.

Surface crevasses formed over the keel due to its intense collision with the sea floor, provides valuable insights into the iceberg's structural changes.

As A-23a reaches the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, it encounters converging water streams circulating clockwise around the continent.

The interaction with these currents, coupled with prevailing westerly winds, will dictate the iceberg's trajectory. Anticipated to follow "iceberg alley," it is poised to head toward the British overseas territory of South Georgia.
