The German National Security Advisor, Jens Plötner, who was on a Delhi visit on Wednesday, has hoped that "back filing" of sanctions imposed by his country against Russia will take place. The West, including Germany and the EU, has announced a number of sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine on February 24th.

Speaking to the media, German NSA sitting alongside German Envoy Walter J. Lindner said, "When it comes to sanctions, it's only fair that we carry the brunt of the costs. It's in our neighborhood, it's in Europe." Pointing out that "we know that acting together on sanctions might be asking too much... we would like to see a situation where there is no back filing on the sanctions we operate and no friendly country in the world takes the step of taking economic advantage of the war."

His comments come even as many countries in Asia, including India and China, have not joined the Western sanctions. In fact, Moscow has offered discounted Russian oil to India. Indian state-run oil companies are in talks to get discounted oil, but even then, Russia historically has been a marginal supplier of crude oil to India.

The NSA, who is the Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to German chancellor Olaf Scholz, explained, "we are willing to carry significant weight (of sanction) in this but others won't neutralise the burden we are putting on ourselves." In Delhi, he held meetings with NSA Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla in which the Russian invasion of Ukraine dominated the agenda.

On German Dependency on Russian Energy, the NSA said Berlin has been "engaged in a forceful policy" of reducing its dependency on Russia and we "hope to be independent from Russian coal in the course of this year, and hope to significantly reduce dependency on Russian oil starting this year," but it will take "longer to totally renounce Russian gas." Germany gets 30% of its gas from Russia. The country also announced it would halt the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline in the aftermath of the Russian invasion.

Presenting his country's case, he said, "As you see, we are steadily decreasing and not increasing what we are buying from Russia." This will be a suggestion we will make to our friends that it might not be the time to do exactly the contrary to what we are all doing. After the Delhi visit, he goes to Tokyo for talks.

On talks in Delhi, NSA Plötner said, "The aim of my discussions here in Delhi is to better understand how this geopolitical specificity of India plays into your analysis of what is going on in Ukraine." We might have different approaches, but we will still come to the common conclusion that that can't go unchecked". While India has abstained at the UN on issues relating to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has called for respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states, a long-standing policy of New Delhi.

During the meeting with NSA Doval, he emphasised "India’s consistent approach to the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law and our commitment to the UN Charter."

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, US Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh, and Dutch NSA are in Delhi today for talks, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be there on Friday.Asked about Lavrov's visit, the German NSA said, "It can be very useful that foreign minister Lavrov has discussions here in New Delhi and I trust that our Indian friends, be it behind closed doors, also have a clear message."

He also praised Turkey's "efforts" in Russia-Ukraine talks, and explained Berlin's dialogue with Jakarta as a response to Western countries' calls for Russia to be removed from the G20.Indonesia holds the G20 summit in November as the president of the group for this year.

The United States imposed new sanctions Thursday on entities and people in Russia and North Korea after Pyongyang's latest ICBM missile test.

The targeted persons and organizations are accused of "transferring sensitive items to North Korea's missile program," according to a State Department statement.

"These measures are part of our ongoing efforts to impede the DPRK's ability to advance its missile program and they highlight the negative role Russia plays on the world stage as a proliferator to programs of concern," the statement said, using the official acronym for North Korea.

The new sanctions were quickly derided by Moscow's ambassador in Washington Anatoly Antonov, who said: "serial sanctions will not achieve their goals."

Thursday's launch was the first time Pyongyang had fired the country's most powerful missiles at full range since 2017, and it appears to have travelled higher and further than any previous intercontinental ballistic missile tested by the nuclear-armed nation.

Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the test-firing of a "new type" of ICBM to boost his country's nuclear deterrent against the US "imperialists," North Korea's state media reported early Friday.

In response, the State Department said Washington has sanctioned the Russian entities called Ardis Group, PFK Profpodshipnik and Russian national Igor Aleksandrovich Michurin.

It also sanctioned North Korean citizen Ri Sung Chol and a North Korean entity called Second Academy of Natural Science Foreign Affairs Bureau.

The statement did not detail the specific allegations against these people and entities.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong late on Thursday to reaffirm Washington's alliance with Seoul.

The two top diplomats reiterated that the launch violated multiple UN Security Council resolutions, and "demonstrates the threat the DPRK's unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs pose to the DPRK's neighbors and the broader international community," State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a readout of the call.

For its part, the Russian embassy accused the United States of seeking to punish officials in Moscow because they hold a view that "does not correspond to the views of Washington."

"It is obvious that the next 'package' of anti-Russian sanctions is aimed at destroying the economy and undermining the domestic political situation in our country," Antonov posted on the embassy's Facebook page.

Last week, the US Treasury announced sanctions against two Russian individuals and three entities over their support for North Korea's weapons program.

Russia has been a target of several western sanctions after it invaded Ukraine. Amid all the chaos, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos has warned that all these sanctions could crash the International Space Station.

As per Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions could disrupt the operation of ISS. The Roscosmos chief on Telegram wrote that the Russian segment of the station could be affected. This segment helps correct its orbit. If affected, it can cause the 500-tonne structure to "fall down into the sea or onto land."

The Russian segment ensures that the station's orbit is corrected (on average 11 times a year), including to avoid space debris", said Rogozin.

He further published a map of the locations where the ISS could possibly come down. It was unlikely to be in Russia.

"But the populations of other countries, especially those led by the 'dogs of war', should think about the price of the sanctions against Roscosmos", he continued.

Meanwhile, as more and more companies pull out from Russia over its war on Ukraine, Kremlin is reportedly easing its copyright laws and allowing domestic companies to steal intellectual property from “unfriendly nations."

Earlier this week, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development proposed relaxing piracy legislation to undermine sanctions imposed by the Western countries.

“The possibility of lifting restrictions on the use of intellectual property contained in certain goods, the supply of which to Russia is limited, is being considered,” the ministry said in a statement.

“This will smooth out the impact on the market of breaks in supply chains, as well as the shortage of goods and services that arose due to new sanctions by Western countries.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday Western sanctions on Moscow for its actions in Ukraine could send global food prices soaring, as Russia was one of the world's main producers of fertiliser, which is essential to global supply chains.

"Russia and Belarus are some of the biggest suppliers of mineral fertilisers. If they continue to create problems for the financing and logistics of the delivery of our goods, then prices will rise and this will affect the final product, food products," Putin said at a televised government meeting.

Sanctions on Russia may increase global food prices, claims Putin

If a recent study is to be believed, European countries are making oil payments amounting to $285 million (£217 million) every day to Russia, which is then helping Putin to fund his war against Ukraine.

New analysis by the Transport & Environment (T&E) thinktank estimates that Russia received $104bn from its crude, petrol and diesel exports to Europe and UK last year, more than twice the $43bn it took from gas shipments.

“Europe is sending over a quarter of a billion to Putin every day, even as he wages war in its own backyard. This has to end. But we should not simply swap Russian oil for Saudi oil. It’s time to greatly improve transport efficiency and turbocharge the electrification of transport to drive down our oil consumption,” William Todts, executive director of T&E, said.

European countries are reliant on Russian oil for over a quarter of their crude oil.

While some European countries like Slovakia are dependent on Russia for over 90 per cent of their oil, the continent’s dependence as a whole, while significant, is not significant, the analysis shows.

The report was released just days ahead of the announcement made by the US to ban Russian oil imports. Shell also said that it would shut down its Russian petrol stations and oil spot purchases.

UK prime minister Boris Johnson is also expected to make a statement later this week on reducing British imports of Russian gas. Apart from that, several European countries are working out alternatives to end reliance on Russian oil.

Putin's war on Ukraine being bolstered by oil payments from Europe: Report

Russia has said that it is too working on a broad range of sanctions that would hit the west's most sensitive areas. This came after US President Joe Biden announced a ban on all Russian oil imports.

Russian football federation on Thursday said that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decisions by FIFA and UEFA to bar Russian national teams from international competitions over the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian football federation said in a statement it would file one lawsuit against the two governing bodies to demand that Russian men's and women's national teams be allowed to compete, including in qualifying for this year's World Cup in Qatar.

It was earlier stated by FIFA that Russia would be able to continue to play under the 'Football Union or Russia' name, and without their flag or anthem being present at matches.

Iran said that it was ready to step up exports of crude oil once US sanctions are lifted. Iran is currently negotiating with world powers to revive 2015 nuclear deal

Global oil prices have shot up in the aftermath of Russian invasion of Iran.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to increase its production and exports to the pre-November 2018 level," Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji was quoted as saying by the official IRNA agency.

Owji was referring to November 5, 2018 when the US under then president Donald Trump reimposed sanctions against Iran's oil sector, following its withdrawal in May that year from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.

"It is up to the major consuming countries to take the necessary steps to maintain stability and calm in the oil market," Owji had said Wednesday after an OPEC meeting, according to Shana, the ministry's official agency.

In that meeting, the oil-rich Gulf states had failed to respond to Western pressure to increase crude output, prioritising their own strategic and economic interests.

"I promise to reach the highest oil export capacity within one to two months as soon as the green light from Vienna is given," Owji said.

The minister had, in comments on February 6, estimated his country's export capacity at 2.5 million barrels per day, out of total production of about 4 million bpd, according to the Shana agency.

"Iran is technically and operationally capable of stabilising its export share in the world market after the lifting of sanctions," he said.

Crude oil prices were already rising sharply before the Ukraine war amid supply shortages due to a strong recovery in global demand caused by the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in many countries.

Surging oil prices are playing a major role in sending global inflation to the highest levels in decades, forcing central banks to hike interest rates.

In recent days, negotiators have reported progress in the ongoing talks in Vienna aimed at salvaging the nuclear deal Iran reached with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

Western sanctions will never make Russia change its position on Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.

Responding to a barrage of Western sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: "They are counting on forcing us to change our position. This is out of the question."

Peskov told reporters that President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the first round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials on Monday but it was too early to judge the outcome.

There were no plans for talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, he said, adding that Moscow still recognised Zelenskiy as Ukraine's leader.

Zelenskiy, he said, could prevent further casualties if he gave the command to lay down arms.
