United States on Tuesday (July 25) claimed that the Russian fighter jets fired flares at an American MQ-9 Reaper drone while flying over Syria.

The incident happened on Sunday (July 25) when it was on a counter-terrorism mission against the Islamic State group, US Air Forces Central said.

"On 23 July, 2023 at 12:23 a.m. (EST) Russian fighter aircraft flew dangerously close to a U.S. MQ-9 drone on a defeat-ISIS mission, harassing the MQ-9 and deploying flares from a position directly overhead, with only a few meters of separation between aircraft," Air Forces Central Commander Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich said.

The drone’s propeller suffered “serious” damages, the air force said.

“The Sukhoi Su-35 began dropping flares in front of the US drone, severely damaging its propellor, the Air Force said. The drone’s crew was able to control the aircraft and fly it back to its home base,” Grynkewich said in a statement

The US Air Force called upon the Russian forces in Syria “to put an immediate end to this reckless, unprovoked, and unprofessional behaviour.”

There have been increasingly close encounters between the Russian fighter jets and US drones operating over Syria.

This is the second time this month that US and Russian jets have come in close proximity in the Syrian air.

And on July 14, a senior US defence official said another Russian fighter jet flew near an MQ-9 Reaper drone over Syria in an unprofessional manner.

The increased confrontation between the countries in the Syrian skies can be attributed to the presence of their militaries&nbsp;in the North African region.

While the US has around 900 troops in eastern Syria fighting against the IS terrorist group, Russia has a military presence in northwestern Syria as part of its mission to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This comes after the US has previously accused Russia of an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” intercept of its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone which eventually crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Russian military has said that they scrambled the air defence unit jets after detecting the US drone but has denied causing the crash and said that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) had lost control, a claim the US disputed. While repeating its version of the events, the Russian ministry announced the awards on Friday.&nbsp;

“As a result of sharp manoeuvring around 9:30 am (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface,” said the Russian military in a statement, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

The defence minister Shoigu presented the awards to the two Su-27 pilots for “preventing” the US drone from “violating” international airspace restrictions placed by Moscow amid what it describes as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, reported The Moscow Times.&nbsp;

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.”&nbsp;

The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s&nbsp;propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea.&nbsp;

US Air Force General James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa, said: "Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9".&nbsp;

Hecker further said that "this incident demonstrates a lack of competence in addition to being unsafe and unprofessional".&nbsp;

The statement mentioned that the incident happened at approximately 7:03am (CET). It also noted that several times before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on the drone and flew in front of it. The US Air Force called the incident "reckless" and "environmentally unsound".&nbsp;

CNN quoted a US official familiar with the incident as saying that the Russian fighter jet damaged the propeller of the American drone. The official, whose identity was not revealed in the report, said that the Reaper drone and two SU-27 Flanker jets were operating over international waters over the Black Sea when the incident occurred. One of the Russian jets "intentionally" flew in front of and dumped fuel in front of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).&nbsp;

While responding to the incident, the National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists that the Russian intercepts in the area are common, but this one "is noteworthy because of how unsafe and unprofessional it was, indeed reckless that it was".&nbsp;

In the immediate aftermath, The US summoned Russia's ambassador to protest the crash, the State Department said. Russia's defence ministry denied causing the crash as it said that it scrambled fighter jets following the detection of a US drone over the Black Sea.&nbsp;

"As a result of a sharp manoeuvre... the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle entered an uncontrolled flight with loss of altitude and collided with the surface of the water," the ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

The ministry added that its fighter jets "did not use their on-board weapons, made no contact with the UAV".&nbsp;

The COMCASA agreement will ensure net-enabled weapons systems which includes precision weapons and air-to-air missiles, also space and navigation systems.

The Predator-B drone can attack and carry out surveillance. The state of the art drone has infra-red and maritime radar.

The Indian government has however not yet decided on buying the drones. Sources told WION that the discussion on drones could be taken up by India's defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who will be travelling to the US this month for talks.

The Predator-B drone is known as the MQ9 Reaper and is a deadly, hunter-killer drone. It is also is a "cheaper option" than a manned aircraft, especially in hostile territory. The drone is handled by a ground crew and its attack is undertaken by a pilot.&nbsp;

The Predator-B can operate from a height of 50,000 feet, it also possesses multi-mode maritime surveillance radars. The electronic support measures include jamming enemy communications and radar. It also has laser designators to guide missiles to targets.

The Preador-B is decked with hellfire missiles including laser-guided missiles. The biggest advantage of the drone is its ability to stay on a target undetected for hours together. It was the same type of drone the US used for surveillance on al Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden.

India has already signed the 22 Sea Guardian unmanned aerial systems(UAS) drones from the US at a reported cost of $2 billion. The move was aimed at protecting India's security, the &nbsp;Sea Guardian also performs maritime surveillance.

Sources said India wasn't interested in buying unarmed drones, telling interlocutors in Washington DC that it added to costs and logistics effort. India preferred both attack and surveillance in one platform.
