The inaugural run of the second Tejas train by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) will be flagged off from Ahmedabad on January 17, 2020, and will start running between Ahmedabad and Mumbai from January 19.

According to a press release by IRCTC, after the successful run of Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express by IRCTC, the second premium Tejas train is ready to run between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

The commercial run of the train will start with effect from 19th January 2020 from Ahmedabad.

The release stated that the booking for this train has commenced and passengers can book their tickets exclusively on the IRCTC website&nbsp;and its mobile app "IRCTC Rail Connect".

There will be no booking at railway reservation counters. However, passengers can get their tickets booked through IRCTC authorized agents.

The train will also be available for booking through IRCTC`s online travel portal partners like Paytm, Ixigo, PhonePe, Make My Trip, Google, Ibibo, Railyatri etc.

This train 82902/82901 would run on the Ahmedabad - Mumbai- Ahmedabad route for 6 days a week with Thursday as an off-day for maintenance activities.

The train will be equipped with all modern onboard facilities to ensure a high level of comfort to the passengers."IRCTC endeavors to provide a world-class travelling experience to its passengers through the newly announced Premium Tejas Train," said the release.&nbsp;

After the success of India's first private train Tejas Express, the government is now planning to hand over the development of 50 railway stations and operations of about 150 trains to private players.

The government has also proposed to set up an Empowered Group of Secretaries to drive the process.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, in a letter, addressed to Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav, said, "As you are aware that the Railways Ministry was required to take up development of 400 railway stations and make them 'world-class'. Despite the aforesaid commitments, the actual implementation of the same has not happened except for a few isolated cases."

Kant further added that based on his discussions with the Union Railways Minister, a necessity was felt to develop 50 railway stations on a 'priority basis'.

"Considering the recent experience in the privatisation of 6 Airports, a similar process for setting up an Empowered Group of Secretaries to drive the process is required," read the letter dated October 7.

The Empowered Group of Secretaries is said to consist of CEO, Niti Aayog; Chairman, Railway Board; Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and the Secretary of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Kant further stated that the said Empowered Group of Secretaries may also be tasked to drive railway's initiative of bringing in private operators for passenger train operations in which about 150 trains are expected to be taken up in the first phase.

In a major crackdown against spurious mineral water being sold in trains, more than 800 people were arrested on Wednesday.

As many as 48,860 bottles of spurious mineral water were recovered in an operation which was carried out at over 300 places following the complaints filed by passengers.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court asked the Railways on Tuesday to file an affidavit detailing the steps it has taken, and proposes to take, to ensure availability of clean and safe drinking water on its trains as well as stations.

The lawyers, representing the Railways, told the HC that it has set up chlorination plants to treat the water. The Railways also told the court that it, occasionally, sends samples of water collected from its stations to laboratories. 
 
Indian Railways has been taking steps to ensure the safety and convenience of passengers. Passengers on board premier trains like Rajdhani and Duronto are provided with free Rail Neer bottles but passengers on many other trains have to rely on either buying bottles or using drinking water taps at stations.&nbsp;

Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said that Indian Railways needs an investment of Rs 50 lakh crore by 2030 to make it the "world's best."

"I have never spoken about the privatisation of Railways. What is said in the Budget is Railways are an important mode of transport. And ever since Railways have reached Goa, we have felt that there is a big change and tourism has increased in a big way. When we speak about the future then till 2030, in 11, 12 years, railways will need an investment of Rs. 50 lakh crore, if we have to make it the world's best railway service," Goyal said here at an event.

"This includes aspects like passenger safety, ensuring a comfortable journey, expansion of railway tracks to accommodate more passengers. We have also set an ambitious target for increasing of freight on the Railways which has now shrunk to 30 per cent and when we have seen that in 65 years, before the advent of the Narendra Modi government, investment had reduced in the Indian Railways, as a result of which infrastructure has increased by only 30 per cent and the passenger and freight traffic has increased by 1500 per cent," he added.

Goyal stated that the estimate is that "passengers and freight will face discomfort and safety will be decreased due to overload."

"In the last five years, we have more than doubled capital investment in the Railways. This year too Rs 1.60 lakh crore capital investment we have planned in the Railways. In 2013-14 it was around Rs 40,000 to Rs. 45,000 crore. Such is the change which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought in Indian Railways. But when you look ahead, the government will not be able to invest Rs. 50 lakh crore alone. Our efforts are to bring technology of international standards, investment or a Public Private Partnership or a TOT model, which yesterday Nirmala Sitharaman referred to toll operate and transfer. There are different models we can follow. We want the Indian Railways to grow," he said.

Goyal said that Railways by itself will not be privatised.

"Railways belong to the government, it will stay with the government. The big investment (in the Railways sector) belongs to the government and it will be in the service of the public," he said.Meanwhile, on the mining issue, Piyush Goyal stated that the central government is "committed to solving the issue."

"The Chief Minister has had several meetings without leadership in Delhi. He has had several meeting with the Prime Minister on this issue. It is a very difficult issue, which has to be resolved within the framework of the law and yet recognising the special situation in Goa. The legal department in Goa and the law ministry in Delhi are working together to see how we can find a solution, given the fact that the Supreme Court had earlier ordered that all natural resources of the country have to be auctioned."

He added, "This was the order in the wake of the massive Coalgate scam, which the Congress and UPA had indulged in which they had given away large amount of mines to select parties. But Goa has a peculiar situation where mining has been going on for so many years. These are no new mines, so we have to find a solution within the ambit of the law, recognising and respecting the Supreme Court judgement and the unique position of Goa. We stand committed to finding a solution. We will work with the Goa government, but we will also need to respect the law of the land."

On the occasion, Piyush Goyal also remembered former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and called him a "good friend and a big brother."

"He was a tough party worker and an ideal worker of the party. We worked closely with him. He was a patriot and an uncommon leader. He was never a leader, he was a party worker who became a Chief Minister and reached heights of his political career. This is the speciality of the party. I remember whenever Narendra Modi addressed party workers, he has said that the party and the government's strengths is based on the party workers. It is the biggest party in the world. Workers provide a bridge which connects government to the people," Goyal said.

Railways is conducting extensive trials of Tri-Netra technology but it cannot be introduced till it is found to be perfect in detecting any obstruction on tracks during fog, the Rajya Sabha was informed Friday.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal told members during the Question Hour that the Tri-Netra system is another attempt by the Railways to develop modern technology.

"This is also under extensive trials. This Tri-netra device is making an attempt during fog through ultrasonic waves where it will be able to detect any obstruction on tracks. It is under testing, but without proper testing, it cannot be implemented, as it does not give us the confidence to implement it," the minister said.

Goyal also informed members that Railways is setting up small Reverse Osmosis (RO) water plants at some stations for provisions of drinking water to people.

"In 2002-03 what was developed was tried extensively but was found to be not successful. Unless extensive trials take place, you cannot introduce unless there are extensive trials and that can cause more damage. That project was aborted. Subsequently, we developed another technology of Fog-past devices for seeing in fog," he told the House.

"The TRI-NETRA (Terrain Imaging for Drivers Infrared, Enhanced, Optical &amp; Radar Assisted) system comprises Infrared Camera, Optical Camera and Radar assisted imaging system to assist Loco pilots to identify obstructions on tracks, especially in foggy conditions. It's testing on all parameters will be done after its procurement and field trials as proof of concept," the minister said in his written reply.

Responding to a query on lack of availability of water on trains, the minister said Railways has gone into the issue and the pressure with which water was loaded on trains was found to be less as the demand of water was much less earlier.

"We have now taken a policy decision that we are changing the system for high-pressure pumping so that water tanks get full and nobody has problems during the journey.

"While we are distributing Rail Neer inside trains, we are also setting up small RO plants at different stations where people can procure water for drinking," he said.&nbsp;

With a plan to introduce professional massage services in trains, a Railways official on Sunday said initially masseurs (male) will be hired for the project and subsequently, on the basis of its success, the masseuse will be introduced.

The masseurs who will provide professional services to the passengers on train will have to travel on their own ticket and their number would be displayed to the passengers for availing the services, said the Railway official.

Indian Railways on Saturday announced massage services for passengers that would be made available in 39 trains deporting from Indore.

The 39 trains originating from Indore will soon provide head and foot massage services to its passengers.DRM Ratlam division, RN Sunkar said, "We have already awarded tenders. Initially, we will have only masseurs and based on the success of the project, we will introduce masseuses."

"Masseurs will travel as passengers and carry their own tickets. Railways will be benefitted as there will be more earning through these tickets and an additional benefit of Rs 20 lakh per annum. Passengers onboard can call for services through contact number displayed in coaches," said Sunkar.

Passengers hailed the initiative by the Railways and asserted that it would be of great help to those who are tired of the long journey and to the elder commuters.

"It will help passengers. Passengers who are aged, women passengers, daily commuters and others will be benefitted. However, I feel that the massage services should be provided at concessional rates to those who travel in sleeper class," said Anil Jain, a traveller from Indore.

"Such types of services should be started at Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmadabad also," he added.

"I am a regular traveller and I see the problem faced by elder citizens travelling in trains. This would be of great help to such passengers and also to those who need it medically. The rates seem to be normal," said Ankit Bansal, who hails from Rajasthan.

"This would also be of great help to those passengers who are tired of the long journey," he added."Railway Ministry has given us directions to provide as many facilities as possible to passengers. So we decided to start this. Agency has been designated and they will appoint trained masseurs and provide their medical and other certificates to us, then we will authorise them," said Sunkar.

The Railways will charge Rs 100 each for foot massage or head massage and charges will surge if a passenger wants some 'specialized services', use of medicines or oils.

The charges will vary accordingly, the official said. Massage service will not be available during night hours (10 pm to 6 am). The service is likely to commence in the next 15-20 days.

Railways plans to introduce professional massage services in trains

Piyush Goyal, reassigned the charge of the crucial railway ministry, is likely to focus on safety, generation of non-fare revenue, track renewal, modernisation and increase in the production of state-of-the-art coaches in his second stint at the helm of the national transporter, official sources said Friday.

The Bombay High Court Tuesday directed the Railways to ensure that sewage or untreated water is not used for irrigation and cultivation of vegetables on land along railway tracks across the country.

A bench of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice NM Jamdar directed the general manager of the Indian Railways to ensure that the court's direction is implemented and licences of violators are cancelled.

The bench was hearing a PIL filed by a city NGO through lawyer JP Kharge.

Kharge alleged that several people had been given licences by the Western and Central Railways to cultivate along the railway tracks of the Mumbai's suburban rail network.

However, many of these people were using "sewage water" for irrigation and all the toxins from such water were being passed on to the vegetables grown there.

Kharge told the court that chemical analysis of some vegetables grown along the tracks had found high levels of lead, arsenic, copper and other metals.

These metals can have an adverse effect on human health, he said.

Counsel for Western and Central Railways, advocate Suresh Kumar, told the court that while the railways had given licences to some of its Grade C and D staff to cultivate on surplus land along the railway tracks in the city, its rules did not permit the use of untreated water.

The court said while the idea behind using surplus land for cultivation was good, the railways were bound to ensure that "public health" was not compromised.

It, therefore, directed the authorities to ensure none of the licence holders across the country was permitted to use untreated water or to flout other terms of the licence granted to them.&nbsp;

The Centre has told the National Green Tribunal that action plan for 37 railway stations which are to be developed as "eco-smart stations" will be implemented in three months.

The Centre told a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel that nodal officers have been identified by the railway administration to oversee the implementation of environment management systems at the 37 stations.

"They will also act as regulators for environment norms and will have authority to lay down and collect compensation on 'Polluter Pays'' principle. They will be authorised to issue receipts for the compensation so recovered. This mechanism will be put on the website," Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, appearing for the Railways, told the NGT.

Noting the submissions, the tribunal said that with regard to the next phase, action plans should be prepared for all the remaining major stations indicating phase-wise steps and categories of implementation.

"The action plans may have categories for number of stations for different phases but all the major stations should be covered within one year on the pattern of 37 major stations already identified."

"We also expect that de-centralised municipal solid waste plants may be set up at the identified locations in terms of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The Executive Director, Environment and Health Management (ENHM), Railway Headquarters, may compile the progress of execution of action plans periodically and also lay down adverse consequences for the nodal officers or others who fail to execute the action plans within the targeted timeline by way of entry into their annual reports," the tribunal said.

It also said the Railway Board may also compile data of preparation of action plans for the remaining major stations within three months and furnish the same to the Central Pollution Control Board for analysis.

"If the CPCB finds that action plan has been duly implemented and selected railway stations are meeting the parameters of ISO 14001, such stations may be certified as eco-smart stations," the tribunal said.

The green panel had earlier said there was an urgent need for the railways to put in place an effective implementation and monitoring mechanism with provisions of fixing accountability of individuals in respect of solid waste disposal, littering of solid and plastic wastes, defecation etc.

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday approved the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Rapid Rail Transport System (RRTS) costing around Rs 30,668 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone of the 82.50 kilometre&nbsp;project on March 8.

"The project would be designed for a speed of 180 km per hour but the average speed would be 100 km per hour," said the Sidharth Nath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister.

He said that funding for the project would be a 'mix'&nbsp;funding from central government, Delhi government, Uttar Pradesh government and through the loan."The funding would be of mix type. The central government and both the Delhi government and Uttar Pradesh government will fund. Also, some money would be drawn by means of loan," he said.

He said that the project would be completed by 2024.The minister also informed that cabinet cleared the proposal to operate electric buses in nine major cities of the state that includes Lucknow, Prayagraj, Agra, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Varanasi, Shahjahanpur and Mathura.

He informed that the cabinet has also approved a discount of 25 per cent against existing 20 per cent to customers at the Gandhi Ashram on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.&nbsp;

The Samjhauta Express will leave for <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-suspends-samjhauta-express-train-service-200175">Pakistan</a> from Delhi on Sunday after the two neighbours agreed to operationalise services at their ends, a senior railway official told PTI.

The announcement came a day after Pakistan released Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.

While Pakistan had cancelled its services right after an air strike by the Indian Air Force, India cancelled the operations of the Samjhauta Express on February 28.

The Railway Board in an order had said all operations of the Attari Special Express, Delhi-Attari-Delhi, which together with the Pakistani line from Wagah-Lahore is known as the Samjhauta or Friendship Express, will remain cancelled.

It had also said that the cancellation was due to "purely operational reasons".

Sources said after the missive about Pakistan's resumption of services was conveyed to the board, it was decided that services on the Indian end will resume too.

The train will start running from the Indian side on Sunday, while on the Pakistan side it will leave Lahore on Monday for its return journey, the official said.?

On the Indian side, the train runs from Delhi to Attari and from Lahore to Wagah on the Pakistan side.

The Samjhauta Express, named after the Hindi word for "agreement", comprises six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach.&nbsp;

The Agra metro rail project will have two corridors which will pass through the heart of the city and connect prominent tourist places including Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Sikandra as well as ISBT, Raja Ki Mandi Railway Station, Medical College, Agra Cant Railway Station, Collectorate, Sanjay Place and surrounding densely populated residential areas.

1. The length of Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor 14.00 km, which is partly elevated and partly underground comprises of 13 stations (6-Elevated and 7-Underground).

Centre approves Agra, Kanpur rail projects

The Railways on Wednesday said the Samjhauta Express will continue to run as per schedule from Delhi to Attari in India, amidst reports that Pakistan has suspended its operations between Wagah to Lahore on its side.

“The train will run as per schedule as of now,” Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar told PTI about its operation on the Indian side.

The biweekly train, which runs on Wednesdays and Sundays, will leave at 11:10 pm tonight as per schedule from the Old Delhi Railway station with 26 passengers aboard – four in AC coach, 22 in non-AC coaches — sources said.

The train does not have any commercial stops between Delhi and Attari.

Railways is the lifeline of the nation. Nowhere is this as true as in Mumbai, where the suburban network popularly called ‘the local train’ ensures that Mumbaikars reach their destination on time. At a total length of 459 km, the network has more than 3,000 services of local trains carrying around 80 lakh people on a daily basis, making it one of the busiest urban transport systems in the world.

To ensure that Mumbai has world-class infrastructure in keeping with its metropolitan status, the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a number of initiatives to upgrade the suburban system, which will help improve passenger satisfaction and safety, reduce congestion, and adequately plan for the future.

With regard to passenger safety, Railways is working in mission mode. Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), platforms and pathways on platform end are now treated as safety items having highest priority with no budgetary restriction. To allow free and safe movement of passengers, 87 FOBs have been constructed since 2014, including 44 after the unfortunate Elphinstone Road station tragedy. A further 70 FOBs will be commissioned this year while 55 will be commissioned next year.

&nbsp;The average time for construction has been reduced from 8-9 months to about 3 months. We have also raised the height of all station platforms in the suburban section to allow safer entry and exit into trains.

Very often passengers climb a train and do not realise that it is about to move. This poses a serious risk to their lives and well-being. Therefore, a new innovation in the form of a blue light signal on the door of the coach to signal that the train is starting, has been introduced. Passengers will now get adequate warning. We will use this system after all trials are completed.

Under our government, we have significantly scaled up investments into new projects. In 2016, PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3 (MUTP 3) worth approximately Rs 11,000 crore. Under this project, several works have been started, including the Airoli-Kalva elevated link, Panvel-Karjat new suburban double line corridor, and the introduction of 47 new air-conditioned suburban trains.&nbsp;

These will help decongest the network while adding improved services.

In the 2018-19 Budget, an unprecedented Rs 55,000 crore was announced for a new project in Mumbai — the MUTP 3A, showcasing the Government’s ambitious plans for the suburban system. Under this, a number of lines will be extended and introduced. In addition, a communications-based train control system will be introduced for improved safety and punctuality. Funds will also be allocated towards station improvement and procurement of AC rakes.

Under this government, long pending projects are also being fast tracked and completed. The long-awaited Nerul-Seawood/Belapur-Uran new line first phase project is finally complete. Sanctioned in 1996-97, the work was very slow. However, after 2014 the work was fast tracked and the line finally opened in November 2018. The personal intervention of CM Devendra Fadnavis helped smoothen all issues. Currently, the second phase of the project is in progress.

Having personally travelled on local trains as a student, I know the difficulties an average commuter faces. To beat the sweltering heat and humidity, an AC rake was introduced for the first time ever. We have given a green signal for procuring 210 AC rakes.

It was inconceivable that for a city which never stops, people have to wait in long lines to buy tickets for local trains. Those days of waiting have now ended with the introduction of the UTS mobile app to buy unreserved tickets on the spot. Waiting for trains has become more convenient with the introduction of high-speed wi-fi at 27 stations.

We have also reduced the waiting time for trains. Since 2014, 214 services have been added to the Mumbai suburban network. To meet the ever-growing demand for direct connectivity between India’s financial capital and political capital, an additional Rajdhani train was introduced between Delhi and Mumbai. It will take a different route covering central India, and will serve hitherto unserved areas.

We are now improving stations through lifts, escalators, Swacchata and security through cameras. In fact, we have also given importance to the security of women passengers. Taking feedback, a number of CCTV cameras have been relocated at stations to ensure better focus on ladies coaches.

Over the last four and a half years, Railways has become cleaner, safer, faster and more convenient. Indian Railways is committed to providing better services to every Mumbaikar and our efforts to improve infrastructure, passenger conveniences and safety will ensure the iconic Mumbai suburban system is a part of the New India vision.

"Train 18 will now be known as Vande Bharat Express. It's a train built completely in India by Indian engineers, in a span of 18 months. It'll ply from Delhi to Varanasi. It is an example that it's possible to make world-class trains under Make in India," Goyal said.

The fully air-conditioned train will stop at Kanpur and Allahabad and will have two executive chair cars.

"It is completely made in India and various names were suggested by the general public but we have decided to name it Vande Bharat Express. A gift on the occasion of Republic Day to people. Will request the prime minister to flag it off," he said.&nbsp;

In consonance with the spirit of “Digital India” the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Friday introduced the electronic payment mode for the food items on trains through the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines.

Also, the paper bill is generated immediately after the payment is made by the customers as a record of the purchase.

“The biggest advantage is that one can pay the bill electronically and the right amount would be generated. It would keep a check on the overcharging and the complaints regarding the same,” said an IRCTC official.

He informed that about 2000 POS have been deployed in Mail and Express trains and soon rest of the trains would also be covered.

“Instructions have been given that in one rake there should be at least 8 machines,” he said.

An inspection drive will also be launched on all the Mail and Express trains from January 26 to February 15 to ensure the availability and working of POS machines.

“This system is indeed very good system as nobody will overcharge the passengers and we have to pay the amount that is generated electronically,” said Neha Singh, who was travelling in Kashi Vishwanath Express from Delhi to Varanasi on Friday.

“Earlier at some instances they use to charge extra for water bottle saying that Rs 2-3 is extra for cooling. Now such type of things will stop,” she said.

“These days people usually avoid carrying change, this is very good system as now we can pay by using credit card or debit card,” said Raj Pratap Singh, another traveller.&nbsp;

"The plan is to seal the railway stations. It is primarily about identifying openings and to determine how many can be closed. There are areas which will be closed through permanent boundary walls, others will be manned by RPF personnel and yet others will have collapsible gates," he said.

"At each entry point, there will be random security checks. However, unlike at airports, passengers need not come hours in advance, but just 15-20 minutes ahead of their departure times to ensure that they are not delayed because of the security process," he said.

Mr Kumar said while security will increase, the presence of security personnel will not. "If we are investing in technology, then workforce requirement will reduce," he said.

These steps are a part of a security plan under the Integrated Security System (ISS) which was approved in 2016 to strengthen surveillance mechanism at 202 railway stations.

The ISS will comprise CCTV cameras, access control, personal and baggage screening system and bomb detection and disposal system which together provide multiple checking of passengers and baggage from the point of entry in the station premises till boarding of the train. The anticipated cost of the ISS project stands at Rs. 385.06 crores.

"The security plan envisages a layered security check where passengers will be scrutinised even before they enter the station premises to ease the pressure at stations during peak hours," Mr Kumar said.

It is also likely to be one of the four special trains to ferry delegates of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 24 from the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad to the national capital in time for the Republic Day event.

The train which will run at a speed of 130 kmph will reduce the journey time between the two cities from the present 11 hours and 30 minutes to 8 hours, the Railways said.

"The train is 45 per cent faster than the fastest train on this route. It will be flagged off by the prime minister ahead of the Kumbh Mela," said the source.

While Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, who inspected the Train 18 rake, on Wednesday refused to give a date for the train's first run, he said it will "begin service soon".

To facilitate pilgrims arriving in large numbers during the Kumbh Mela in 2019, the railways has proposed running 800 special trains from various stations of Allahabad district, an official has said. These trains would be in addition to the regular trains run by the North Central Railway (NCR).

PRO NCR Amit Malviya said, “Six special trains will come to Allahabad from different railway zones of the country for pilgrims and tourists participating in the Kumbh Mela.” He said the railways planned to operate four to five special trains to ferry 5,000 Pravasi Bhartiyas from Allahabad to New Delhi. They will be in Allahabad to participate in the Kumbh Mela after attending the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas at Varanasi.

The Pravasi Bhartiyas will be taken to New Delhi for Republic Day celebrations. He also said branding of the Kumbh Mela will be done on 1,400 coaches of special trains and the originating trains of the NCR by vinyl wrapping, to take the message about the religious fair across the country.

The coaches will have colourful and attractive images of Kumbh Mela and landmark structures of Allahabad. “The railways have given space for ‘Paint My City’ initiative at its stations and residential colonies which is another big branding exercise for the Kumbh Mela,” Malviya said.

He also said that to promote local culture, the North Central Zone Cultural Centre (NCZCC), under the Ministry of Culture, will be co-opted to put up stalls in passenger enclosures showcasing the art, culture and heritage of Allahabad and surrounding areas.

“Four big enclosures to house about 10,000 pilgrims have been constructed at Allahabad Junction railway station. These will have vending stalls, water booths and ticket counters, LCD TVs, public address system, CCTV cameras and separate toilets blocks for men and women. Similar passenger enclosures have also been built at other stations,” the PRO said.

Railway stations associated with the father of the nation were painted thematically. The Swachhta logo and the national flag were displayed on all coaches, the statement said.&nbsp;

Just like air travel, now beware of carrying excess luggage while travelling in trains as well.

As a result of numerous complaints regarding excess baggage being towed into train compartments, the Indian Railways has decided to strictly enforce its over-three-decades-old baggage allowance rules, which will see passengers paying up to six times the stipulated amount as penalty, if caught travelling with overweight luggage, an official said today.

According to the prescribed norms, a sleeper class and a second class passenger can carry luggage weighing 40 kg and 35 kg respectively without paying any extra money and a maximum of 80 kg and 70 kg respectively by paying for the excess luggage at the parcel office. The excess luggage would have to be put in the luggage van.

"The rules were already in place, we are just enforcing them strictly now. Passengers are allowed to book and carry excess luggage in the luggage van, up to the maximum limit, on the payment of a fee equivalent to one-and-a-half times the luggage rate.

"If a passenger is found travelling with un-booked luggage weighing more than the free allowance, the excess weight will be charged six times the luggage rate. The move is to ensure passenger convenience and address the issue of cramped compartments," Ved Prakash, Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board, said.

Officials said unlike at the airports, where the luggage of each passenger is weighed, the railways will carry out random checks among the passengers.

For example, if a passenger is travelling 500 km with luggage weighing 80 kg in the sleeper class, he can book his excess baggage of 40 kg for Rs 109 in the luggage van.

However, if he fails to do so and is caught with the excess luggage, he will end up paying a penalty of Rs 654.

Similarly, an AC first class passenger can carry 70 kg of luggage for free and a maximum of 150 kg, after paying a fee for the excess 80 kg.&nbsp

An AC two-tier passenger can carry 50 kg of luggage for free and a maximum of 100 kg by paying a fee for the excess 50 kg.

The railways will also ensure that trunks, suitcases and boxes adhere to the prescribed measurements of 100cm x 60cm x 25cm (length, breadth, height) for personal luggage to be carried in the compartments.

If the trunks, suitcases and boxes exceed any one of the dimensions, those would have to be booked and carried in the luggage van, Prakash said.

The national transporter has launched a special drive (June 1-6) across all its zones to enforce the rules.

Now, massive fines for excess baggage on trains

The Railways will spend around Rs 350 crore to train 1.5 lakh drivers and assistant drivers through virtual reality techniques to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning, an official said on Wednesday.

The training will be conducted in 47 centres across zones and the national transporter will soon float a global tender to acquire about 40 simulators for the purpose.

"We spend almost a month in giving drivers on-road training. They learn all the techniques in theory, but through these virtual reality techniques, they will learn how to navigate routes, signals, curves, bridges and any other situation as if they are actually driving a real train," said the senior official of the ministry.

Fitted with computer-generated motion images, the simulator will have a man-machine interface, a host of computers and a video camera to capture the movements of the driver.

It would look like a sophisticated electric locomotive and drivers would feel as if they are steering a train on a specified route.

The motion pictures on the monitor in front of the wheel would keep changing and drivers would feel a flurry of activity around them, such as the passing of other trains on adjacent tracks, people and cattle crossing the tracks and sharp bends.

Some zonal railways have already experimented with simulators. The first one was tried in Vadodara and the second in Vijayawada where assistant driver recruits were trained on the state-of-the-art simulators.

Globally, simulator-based training is being imparted by operators in the US, France and Spain and has emerged as a critical component of crew training for it presents a real-life environment and exposes trainees to unusual occurrences.

"This will test how alert a trainee is. They will learn how to deal with a hazardous situation by actually experiencing it and dealing with it. It will greatly improve their skills," said the official.

Over 12,000 electric and diesel locomotives daily run on a 66,000-km network across the country. There are about 86,000 train drivers.&nbsp

In a bid to strengthen security for women passengers, North Eastern Railway has proposed to install panic buttons in coaches and deploy women police in trains during night hours.&nbsp

"These buttons, placed at convenient spots for easy reach of women travellers above the electric switches, when pressed will denote the coach where there is emergency and the railway staff present in the train will be informed to promptly attend to the emergency," chief public relations officer of North Eastern Railway, Sanjay Yadav noted.&nbsp

According to reports, women police personnel will be deployed in sub-urban trains during night hours besides recruitment of women in the Railway Police Force. The panic buttons installed will be linked with the guard coach.&nbsp

Yadav further noted that now female passengers will not have to depend on helpline numbers or resort to chain-pulling in an emergency situation. With the new system in place, immediate action can be taken, he added.

"Work on these proposals was going on and there are chances that the one pertaining to 'panic button' will take shape this year itself," he added.

The proposal also involves having a different colour on the coaches earmarked for women for easy identification, wire mesh in windows of ladies coaches, CCTV cameras in women coaches of suburban trains with live feed if possible, and enhanced punishment for offenders.

Railways may soon install 'panic button' in trains for women safety

The train journey between Dibrugarh and Delhi will be shorter by three hours come year-end, when the railways plans to commission its longest rail-cum-road bridge at Bogibeel in Assam.

Currently, the journey via Guwahati takes around 37 hours. With the 4.94-km-long bridge in place, the journey via Rangia, the regional divisional headquarters of the North East Frontier Railway, the time will be reduced by three hours.

"With the new bridge, new trains will be introduced, which will shorten the journey time. There are difficulties in changing the routes of the existing trains. Thus, we plan to introduce new trains," a senior railway official said.

The bridge will connect eastern Arunachal Pradesh to Upper Assam by cutting down the current distance substantially.

"Instead of going via Tejpur, people can take the bridge. Also, with the bridge, buses will be introduced, autorickshaws and other modes of transport will also thrive. One has to take the ferry now, which takes an hour to cross and that too, shuts at 4 pm every day. The ferry service is also irregular during the monsoon," the official said.

The cost of taking the ferry is Rs 120 per person and ferrying a car costs anywhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000 for the hour-long journey, the locals said.

With the Bogibeel bridge, it will take around five minutes.

While all the civil work for the bridge would be completed by July, two more months would be needed to finish the electrical and signalling work, Mahender Singh, the chief engineer of the project, said.

By the year-end, the bridge is likely to be ready, officials said, adding that it will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The bridge, the second longest in Asia, will have three-lane roads on top and a double-line railway track below.&nbsp

The national transporter is going to launch a dedicated mobile application — rather appropriately named ‘MADAD’ (Mobile Application for Desired Assistance During travel) — later this month to enable its passengers to lodge complaints, be it over food quality or dirty toilets.

They can also requests emergency services through the app. The complaint lodged through the app will directly reach the relevant officials of the divisions concerned and the action taken can be relayed onine, thus fasttracking the entire process of registration and redressal of grievances.

Passengers will also be able to track the status of their complaints and be notified about any action taken in the case. The proposed app would integrate all passenger grievance and redressal mechanisms in the railways. “As of now, we have 14 channels through which passengers can register their grievances. Each has its own response time and even standards of response. While some are active, others are not. We wanted to have one transparent, standardised grievance redressal process. This app is likely to be launched this month,” a senior official said. Passengers can register their grievances simply by keying in their PNRs and they will receive a complaint ID through SMS at the time of registration.

This will be followed by personalised SMS regarding the action taken by the department concerned. The app would also display total monthly complaints received and resolved by the Indian Railways and show ranking of top five and bottom five railway stations and Rajdhani, Shatabdi trains of each zone in terms of faster complaint resolutions to encourage transparency and accountability, the official said.

“The introduction of this system does not mean that we will not respond to complaints on the other forums. But eventually, we want to use this one integrated system. This will also represent a holistic picture of weak, deficient areas and will enable focused corrective action by officials concerned,” the official said.
