<p>Mohammed Yunus was known as a family loyalist, trusted by both Indira Gandhi and her son and political lieutenant Sanjay Gandhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But for some reason, Indira Gandhi was not up for fielding Yunus from Rae Bareli; she was 'absolutely clear' that it had to be someone from the family," Chowdhury writes further.</p>

<p>Rahul Gandhi, the prominent contender representing the Congress party for the Rae Bareli seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, electrified the atmosphere with his speech during a bustling rally in the heart of the Uttar Pradesh constituency on Monday (May 13). During his speech, the crowd&nbsp;engaged in playful banter, teasing Rahul Gandhi about his marital status and&nbsp;prodding him about his plans to enter wedlock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“<i>Ab jaldi hi karni padegi&nbsp;</i>(now, I will have to get married soon),”&nbsp;Rahul Gandhi&nbsp;responded with a smile when asked when he was getting married.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rahul Gandhi's sister and fellow Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also attended the rally in Rae Bareli. On May 3, the Congress party announced Rahul Gandhi as their candidate for Rae Bareli and KL Sharma for Amethi, leaving out Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra from the election race.</p>

<p>Rae Bareli, a stronghold of the Gandhi family, has a rich political history. Sonia Gandhi contested and won the Amethi seat in 1999 before passing it on to Rahul in 2004. Prior to Sonia Gandhi's tenure, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi won the&nbsp;Rae Bareli seat three times. The constituency also elected Indira's husband and Congress leader Feroze Gandhi twice, in 1952 and 1957.</p>

<p>At Rae Bareli's Maharajganj, Rahul Gandhi said, “...Ours is a 100-year-old relationship with Rae Bareli. A few days ago when I was sitting with my mother, I told her that I said in a video that I have two mothers - Sonia ji and Indira ji. My mother did not like this, but I explained to her that a mother is the one who shows the path to the child and also protects her. Both my mother and Indira Ji did this for me. This is the 'karma-bhoomi' of both my mothers. This is the reason I have come to contest from Rae Bareli.”</p>

<p>Reaching out to farmers, the Congress MP said, “...I promise that if the Congress-INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, my first job will be to waive off loans of poor farmers.”</p>

<p>Rahul Gandhi, currently serving as a Member of Parliament from Kerala's Wayanad, is seeking re-election there also while contesting in Rae Bareli. He previously represented Amethi from 2004 to 2019. In Rae Bareli, he will face off against Dinesh Pratap Singh, a former Congress member now with the BJP, who has served as an MLC three times.</p>

<p>In an&nbsp;all-out attack on the Congress, Modi accused the Congress of aligning with forces which do not want to see India's defence forces becoming strong.</p>

<p>"There are two facets before the country...One is of the government which is making every possible effort to augment the strength of defence forces, and the second is of those forces which want to weaken the country at every cost," he said.</p>

<p>The prime minister said people were witnessing that "the Congress is aligning with those forces which do not want our defence forces to become stronger."</p>

<p>Citing a couplet from the Ramcharit Manas, he said there were some people who only accept lies and share these with other people.</p>

<p>"For these very people the defence ministry, the defence minister, officers of the Indian Air Force, government of France, are all lies...Now the Supreme Court also appears to be a lie to them," Modi said in his 50-minute address, nearly 30 minutes of which were devoted to the Rafale deal.</p>

<p>Holding that previous defence deals were tainted, he said the&nbsp;history of the Congress in terms of such deals "belong to (Italian businessman Ottavio) Quattrocchi mama".</p>

<p>Quattrocchi was one of the alleged middlemen in the Bofors deal inked by the government led by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.</p>

<p>Referring to the AgustaWestland chopper case, he said, "We have brought one uncle Christian Michel to India a few days back."</p>

<p>The 54-year-old British national is one of the three alleged middlemen being investigated by the CBI over charges of organising bribes for Indian politicians and bureaucrats to push for the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal.</p>

<p>"Everyone is seeing as to how to save the accused the Congress had sent its advocate to the court," Modi charged.</p>

<p>"I want to know from the Congress as to why it is agitated and telling lies repeatedly. Is it because there is no Quattrocchi mama or Christian Michel in defence deals done by the BJP government?" he asked.</p>

<p>At least 183 others were injured as a massive dust storm, followed by thunder showers, snapped power lines and sent tin roofs and street hoardings flying in parts of eastern Rajasthan and the adjoining areas of Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp</p>

<p>The death toll this evening was 108. Seventy people were killed in UP and 83 injured. In Rajasthan, 38 died and another 100 were injured in the storm that hit the region around 7 pm.</p>

<p>The worst period lasted about 45 minutes, according to reports from Dholpur in Rajasthan. But the extent of the damage was known only this morning.&nbsp</p>

<p>The Met department today predicted another dust storm in parts of Rajasthan and UP in the next 48 hours.</p>

<p>A Met official told PTI in Jaipur that his department had been issuing dust storm warnings for the past couple of days.</p>

<p>India Meteorological Department (IMD) Additional Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra said the trigger for the storm was a cyclonic circulation over Haryana.</p>

<p>But also responsible were a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, and easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal.</p>

<p>In UP, Agra district was the worst hit, accounting for at least 43 deaths and injuries to 51 others, officials said.</p>

<p>Besides Agra, the other storm-hit UP districts were Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli and Unnao.</p>

<p>In Rajasthan, Bharatpur district was the worst affected with 19 killed. Nine people died in Alwar and nine in Dholpur, officials said.</p>

<p>Two of those killed in Dholpur were from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>Power supply was cut off in many areas as the squall uprooted trees and snapped electricity cables. Officials said it was being gradually restored.</p>

<p>In towns, the storm triggered traffic snarls. Some trains were delayed as overhead power cables broke.</p>

<p>In rural areas, there were reports of crop being damaged due to hailstorm. Farmers lost cattle and poultry. UP Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said 160 heads of cattle were lost.</p>

<p>Most of the injured in Rajasthan have been discharged from hospitals.</p>

<p>Rajasthan's Disaster Management secretary Hemant Kumar Gera said some were undergoing primary treatment.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the deaths and directed officials to coordinate with states to ensure speedy relief and rehabilitation.</p>

<p>"Saddened by the loss of lives due to dust storms in various parts of India. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted quoting Modi.</p>

<p>Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was in poll-bound Karnataka today, campaigning with Modi. He directed officials to personally monitor relief operations, warning against any laxity.&nbsp</p>

<p>Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje expressed grief over the calamity and said district authorities have been directed to ensure all possible help to victims.</p>

Dust storm kills over 100 in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan

<p>Taking his party's fight against the Congress to the Gandhi family's pocket borough, BJP president Amit Shah today said his party would rid Rae Bareli, the Lok Sabha constituency of former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, of 'parivarvad' and take it on the path of development.</p>
