Queen Elizabeth will set out on Thursday Prime Minister Boris Johnson's legislative agenda following his election victory, including a pledge to bring the EU Withdrawal Agreement bill back to parliament before Christmas, his office said on Saturday.

Johnson led his Conservative Party on Thursday to their biggest national election win since Margaret Thatcher's landslide victory of 1987, trouncing his socialist Labour Party opponent Jeremy Corbyn by winning 365 parliamentary seats and securing an overall majority of 80. Johnson fought the election on the slogan "Get Brexit done".

The so-called Queen's Speech is used to detail all the bills the government plans to enact over the coming year. It is written by the government and is delivered by the monarch from a throne in parliament's gilded House of Lords debating chamber.

Thursday's speech to parliament will be the 93-year-old queen's second in as many months. She made one on Oct. 14, shortly before the election was called following a prolonged deadlock in parliament over the government's Brexit plans.

The October speech laid out 22 new bills - pieces of proposed legislation - including several covering tougher treatment for foreign criminals and sex offenders, and new protection for victims of domestic abuse.

Johnson's office said Thursday’s speech was expected to provide continuity with what the queen outlined in October, with some additions to strengthen the justice system and enshrine in law a multi-year funding settlement for Britain's state-funded National Health Service.

The new government's top priority, however, will be to finally secure parliamentary approval for the bill to take Britain out of the European Union. Johnson said on Friday Britain would leave the EU on Jan. 31, "no ifs, no buts, no maybes".

The Queen's Speech will also detail plans to provide a better service for rail commuters, greater protection for people who rent their homes, and stop local authorities boycotting products from other countries such as Israel.

The restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland after a near three-year hiatus and "a strong United Kingdom" will also be a focus of Johnson's government, his office said.

Earlier on Saturday, Johnson visited former strongholds of his Labour opponents in northern England and pledged to repay their trust for helping to deliver his stunning election victory.

He has previously promised to spend more money on health, education and the police, and to build more infrastructure, especially in northern England and the Midlands.

Queen Elizabeth to set out PM Johnson's agenda on Thursday

After the sweeping victory in UK General election, Boris Johnson has head to Buckingham Palace to ask Queen Elizabeth for formal permission to create a new government.

In Thursday's general election, the third in less than five years, the Conservatives secured a sweeping victory, winning more than 360 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons - the party's largest majority since under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

The Johnson's win has secured Britain's exit from the European Union by January 31.

Brexit represents the country's biggest political and economic gamble since World War Two, cutting the world's fifth-largest economy adrift from the vast trading bloc and threatening the integrity of the United Kingdom.

For Johnson, who campaigned on a vow to "Get Brexit Done", victory was a vindication after anti-Brexit opponents tried one manoeuvre after another to thwart him during his first chaotic months in office.

"We will get Brexit done on time by the 31st of January, no ifs, no buts, no maybes," a triumphant Johnson told supporters at a rally in London.

"Leaving the European Union as one United Kingdom, taking back control of our laws, borders, money, our trade, immigration system, delivering on the democratic mandate of the people," he said, reprising the refrains of his successful Brexit referendum campaign of 2016.

Sterling soared, on course for one of its biggest one-day gains in the past two decades

Nearly half a century after Britain joined the EU, Johnson must now strike new international trade deals, preserving London's position as a top global financial capital and keeping the United Kingdom together.

That last goal looks more challenging, with Scotland voting for a nationalist party that wants an independence referendum, and Irish nationalists performing strongly in Northern Ireland.

"Boris Johnson may have the mandate to take England out of the European Union. He emphatically does not have the mandate to take Scotland out of the European Union," said Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

Her Scottish National Party (SNP) won 48 of Scotland's 59 seats in the national parliament.

It was an exceptional afternoon where The Duchess had the chance to connect with the children and founders of the phenomenal programme for kids’ development Timbuktu in The Valley. She was also struck by the local denim designer who founded eponymous brand Tshepo who shared this info about the logo for his line: “The crown on my jeans represents the three ladies who raised me.
Queen Elizabeth is all set to "give up her powers" to Prince Charles when she turns 95 in two years, a royal expert has claimed.

The Queen turned 93 earlier in April but could bring in the 1937 Regency Act in two years to relinquish the "majority of duties" to her son and heir to the throne.
The Regency Act allows a reigning monarch to give away the powers if they feel they are unable to fully perform their duties.
Even after handing over her powers, Elizabeth will keep her royal title, but Charles will step up to perform the majority of her duties, with her husband Prince Philip, becoming the Guardian of the Queen.
Royal author Phil Dampier said, "There is talk that when she reaches 95 in a couple of years she may slow down and possibly the Regency Act will be brought in. She will still be Queen but Prince Charles will, in fact, take over most of the duties."
"He is starting to do that already, being at the state opening in Parliament and the Commonwealth conference. He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures," Dampier added.
In order for it to pass, Prince Philip along with a Houses of Parliament spokesperson and a third senior person will have to provide evidence supporting the Queen`s request. Royal author Phil Dampier said, "There is talk that when she reaches 95 in a couple of years she may slow down and possibly the Regency Act will be brought in. She will still be Queen but Prince Charles will, in fact, take over most of the duties." "He is starting to do that already, being at the state opening in Parliament and the Commonwealth conference. He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures," Dampier added. Charles has been filling in for his mother and represented the head of state on foreign trips during her Diamond Jubilee year to Australia and New Zealand.Queen Elizabeth is the oldest and longest-serving monarch following her Coronation in 1953. Millions of people were set to mark the milestone of the Normandy landings in a series of events in the UK and France today. Second World War veterans also attended the national commemorative event in Portsmouth on Wednesday.

Queen, world leaders honor veterans on D-Day anniversary

Wartime generation is resilient! Queen Elizabeth, world leaders hail D-Day veterans on 75th anniversary

Britain's Queen Elizabeth joined world leaders including Donald Trump and Angela Merkel to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion in history and a feat that helped bring World War Two to an end.

The queen, Prince Charles, presidents and prime ministers rose to applaud veterans, their coats heavy with medals, as they stood on a giant stage beside a guard of honour after a film of the Normandy landings was shown.

"We all had a part to play - I wasn't nervous - I was apprehensive like everybody else was," said Bert Edwards, recounting his role 75 years ago as an able seaman on the Royal Navy's HMS Bellona.

"It's something that happens once in a lifetime - makes you proud a little bit for taking part," he said during the film.

Prime Minister Theresa May was joined for the commemorative events in Portsmouth by US President Trump, who is on the final day of a state visit to Britain, and his wife, Melania.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, German Chancellor Merkel, and leaders and senior figures from 10 other countries also attended.

"As we unite to pay tribute to those whose bravery and sacrifice on the beaches of Normandy marked a turning point in the Second World War, we will vow never to forget the debt we owe them," May said.

"Their solidarity and determination in the defence of our freedom remains a lesson to us all."

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 allied troops set off from Portsmouth and the surrounding area to begin the air, sea and land attack on Normandy that ultimately led to the liberation of western Europe from the Nazi regime.

By the time of the Normandy landings, Soviet forces had been fighting Germany in the east for almost three years and Kremlin chief Josef Stalin had urged British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to open a second front as far back as August 1942.

The invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord and commanded by US General Dwight D. Eisenhower, remains the largest amphibious assault in history and involved almost 7,000 ships and landing craft along a 50-mile (80-km) stretch of the French coast.

Shortly after midnight, thousands of paratroopers were dropped. Then came the naval bombardment of German positions overlooking the shore. Then the infantry arrived on the beaches.

Mostly American, British and Canadian men, some just boys, waded ashore as German soldiers tried to kill them with machine guns and artillery. Survivors say the sea was red with blood and the air boiling with the thunder of explosions.

Thousands were killed on both sides. Line upon line of white crosses honour the dead in cemeteries across northern France. Even the codenames of the sectors of the invasion - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword - can draw tears from veterans.

"Never repeat"

"Seventy-five years ago this Thursday, courageous Americans and British patriots set out from this island towards history's most important battle," Trump told a news conference in London on Tuesday.

"They stormed forward out of ships and aeroplanes risking everything to defend our people and to ensure that the United States and Britain would forever remain sovereign and forever remain free."

Sixteen countries attended the commemorations: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Those countries agreed a proclamation to "ensure that the unimaginable horror of these years is never repeated".

"We will act resolutely, with courage and tenacity, to protect our people against threats to our values and challenges to peace and stability," the proclamation said.

The commemorations will feature an hour-long performance recounting the story of D-Day and a flypast by historic and military aircraft.

On Wednesday evening, some 300 veterans who took part on D-Day, all now older than 90, will leave Portsmouth on a specially commissioned ship, MV Boudicca, and retrace their 1944 journey across the English Channel, accompanied by Royal Navy vessels and a lone wartime Spitfire fighter plane.

Meanwhile, in Normandy, British air assault troops, French army paratroopers and D-Day veterans will recreate the airborne landings. There will be further D-Day memorial events on Thursday in northern France.

Wednesday's event coincides with the last day of Trump's state visit to Britain, where he has lavished praise on the U.S. ally and said the wartime bonds forged the "greatest alliance the world has ever known".

He also called for NATO allies to spend more on defence, saying they had no choice but to meet NATO's target of at least 2% of GDP. Trump has repeatedly complained that Germany and others are not pulling their weight and need to do more to ease the burden on the United States.

Britain is one of the few NATO members that does meet the target and May said the D-Day events should serve as an important marker for unity for the future.

"As I host leaders from around the world today to mark this significant moment in our shared history, we will together reflect on the continued importance of the western alliance for all our countries' security and prosperity," she said.

'Bravery and sacrifice': Queen Elizabeth and world leaders applaud D-Day veterans

The United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth will be joined for the commemorative events in Portsmouth by veterans and by US President Donald Trump, who is on the final day of a state visit to Britain.

World leaders gather in UK for start of 75th D-Day commemorations

Donald Trump hailed Queen Elizabeth II as a "great, great woman" as the British monarch threw a lavish banquet for the US president on Monday to kick off his three-day state visit.

Both Trump and the 93-year-old sovereign praised the common bond between Britain and the United States.

But the warmth was not shared all round, with mass protests planned for Tuesday, opposition political figures boycotting the banquet and the trip starting with a spat between Trump and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Trump's visit is centred on the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the liberation of Europe in World War II.

"As we honour our shared victory and heritage, we affirm the common values that will unite us long into future," he said at the banquet.

"Freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, the rule of law and reverence for the rights given to us by almighty God."

He said Queen Elizabeth was a "great, great woman... a constant symbol of these priceless traditions", who embodied British "dignity, duty and patriotism".

Queen Elizabeth said Britain and the United States had built post-war international institutions for "nations working together to safeguard a hard-won peace".

The monarch said the two nations were united by their security, shared heritage, strong cultural links and strong economic ties.

"I am confident that our common values and shared interests will continue to unite us."

Cradling his son, wrapped in a white blanket and wearing a hat, Harry and Meghan appeared before a small group of media at St George's Hall in Windsor castle where they held their wedding reception just under a year ago.

"It's magic - it's pretty amazing and I have the two best guys in the world so I am really happy," said a beaming Meghan, wearing a white sleeveless coat dress, when asked how she was finding being a new mother.

She said the boy, the seventh-in-line to the British throne who has not yet been publicly named, was calm, had the sweetest temperament and was sleeping well.

"He's just been the dream so it's been a special couple of days," she said.

The baby was born in the early hours of Monday morning, weighing 7 lb 3oz (3.26 kg), but few other details have been given about the birth.

"It's great, parenting is amazing," Harry said. "It's only been two-and-a-half days, three days, but we're just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy, to be able to spend some precious time with him as he slowly starts to grow up."

The couple said they were about to visit 93-year-old Elizabeth, the world's longest-reigning monarch, at the castle to allow her to meet her eighth great-grandchild.

"It will a nice moment to introduce the baby to more family and my mum's with us as well," Meghan said.

Britain's royals attract huge fascination and there is particular interest in Harry and former US actress Meghan, who are officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Given their worldwide popularity, the birth of their first child has attracted particular attention, especially as the new child is first mixed race child to be born into a senior position in British royalty in recent history.

He is also entitled to hold US citizenship while also automatically being a British national.

However, the baby will not automatically be a prince or a princess, or be known as "His Royal Highness", unless the queen issues a specific decree.

"Thank you all so much, and thank you everybody for all the well-wishes and the kindness, it just means so much," Meghan said.

Harry, whose playful antics on royal engagements have made him popular with the public and media, could not resist cracking a joke as he pulled back the blanket to allow cameras to get a better look at his son.

"He's already got a little bit of facial as well - wonderful," joked the bearded prince.
