<p>This theorem has numerous applications and is used in designing bridges, buildings, and other structures.</p>

<p>As per the abstract by these two students, mathematicians have long insisted that any assertion that the Pythagorean theorem can be proved using trigonometry is logical fallacy. Logical fallacy, also known as circular reasoning, is the term used when someone tries to prove an idea with the idea itself. When this occurs, the end of an argument comes back to the beginning without proving itself.</p>

<p>The book, <em>The Pythagorean Proposition</em> by Elisha Loomis, which contains the largest known collection of theorem proofs, “flatly states that ‘there are no trigonometric proofs because all the fundamental formulae of trigonometry are themselves based upon the truth of the Pythagorean theorem, " the abstract says.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the abstract, they counter the arguments saying “that isn’t quite true.” The duo said, “We present a new proof of Pythagoras’s Theorem which is based on a fundamental result in trigonometry – the Law of Sines – and we show that the proof is independent of the Pythagorean trig identity sin2x+cos2x=1.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>In other words, they say they could demonstrate the theorem without employing to circular reasoning and by simply utilising trigonometry.</p>

<p>The tablet was unearthed in what is now central Iraq and was given the designation Si.427.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The circular tablet features a diagram drawn by a Babylonian surveyor about 1900-1600 BC.</p>

<p>"It's the only known example of a cadastral document from the OB (Old Babylonian) period, which is a plan used by surveyors to define land boundaries," mathematician Daniel Mansfield said.</p>

<p><strong>Trigonometry 1,000 years before Pythagoras</strong></p>

<p>This is a significant object because the surveyor uses what are now known as "Pythagorean triples" to make accurate right angles.</p>

<p>"This is over a thousand years before Pythagoras was born. The discovery turns our understanding of the history of mathematics on its head. It is generally accepted that trigonometry – the branch of maths that is concerned with the study of triangles – was developed by the ancient Greeks studying the night sky in the second century BCE," Dr Mansfield said.</p>

<p>Mansfield and his UNSW colleague Norman Wildberger had previously examined another tablet from the same age that used Pythogorus triplets to depict right-angled triangles.<br />
