<p>Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday (Mar 30) conferred the Bharat Ratna to five eminent personalities- former prime ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV&nbsp;Narasimha Rao, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former deputy prime minister LK Advani, eminent agricultural scientist and architect of Green Revolution MS Swaminathan, and former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, Karpoori Thakur, and MS Swaminathan were given the award posthumously. While, the award to LK Advani was conferred at his residence on Sunday.</p>

<p>The Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur was received by his son Ram Nath Thakur. "I am very happy. The government of India acknowledged his work and gave him this award. On behalf of the country, I express my gratitude towards PM Modi for conferring the highest civilian honour on him," Thakur told the news agency ANI</p>

<p>For MS Swaminathan, the award was received by her daughter Nitya Rao. And for former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, the award was received by his grandson and Rajya Sabha MP Jayant Chaudhary whose Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) recently joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).</p>

<p>Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award. It was instituted in the year 1954. According to the Union home ministry, Bharat Ratna is awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.</p>

<h2>Who was PV Narasimha Rao?</h2>

<p>Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, who served as India's ninth prime minister, was a lawyer and a prominent Congress leader in the then-undivided state of Andhra Pradesh. Rao remained as the PM of the country&nbsp;from 1991 to 1996.</p>

<p>Globalisation, liberalisation, and privatisation were the three major economic changes implemented by Narasimha Rao's government in 1991, a time when India was experiencing a crisis in its foreign reserves.</p>

<p>He entered politics full-time after independence. In 1957, he won his first election as an MLA and&nbsp;held numerous ministerial roles in the state administration until 1971, when&nbsp;he was appointed as Andhra Pradesh's chief minister.</p>

<p>He was seen as a devoted supporter of Indira Gandhi and backed her when the Congress split&nbsp;into two in 1969.</p>

<p>He was close to retiring in 1991, but after Prime Minister and Congress President Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, he returned to active politics.</p>

<p>After the incident, Rao was approached by senior Congressman Pranab Mukherjee, who informed him that everyone believed Rao ought to be the next Congress President.</p>

<p>Rao wrote in his diary that ‘it would be good to clinch it today itself, so as to forestall rumours of internal struggle etc,’ as mentioned in ‘The Man Who Remade India: A Biography of PV Narasimha Rao’, by Vinay Sitapati.</p>

<p>Rao was elected President of the Congress on May 29, 1991. He&nbsp;took over as prime minister the following month as the party staged a comeback in national elections, gaining 232 of 487 seats.</p>
