“Heatwave conditions have largely abated in the country because of increased rainfall activity and monsoon coverage. Some parts of northwest India will, however, record high temperatures on Tuesday as well,” said a senior IMD official.&nbsp;In the next three to four days, there will be a drop of two to three degrees Celsius in temperatures in northwest and central India, the official added. &nbsp;

Several places like Chandigarh, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Ganganagar, Patiala, Hisar, Churu and Pilani witnessed temperatures over 44 degrees Celsius on Monday, as per IMD’s data. In this year, the Indian capital, New Delhi, has experienced 25 days with maximum temperatures over 42 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Central, northwest India to ditch heatwave, set a date with pre-monsoon showers from Wednesday  

India warned of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/heatwave-across-country-to-continue-for-next-two-days-subside-gradually-imd-223675">severe heat in northern and central areas</a> on Monday, following similar extreme weather on Sunday.

Of the 15 hottest places in the world in the past 24 hours, eight were in India with the others in neighbouring Pakistan, according to weather monitoring website El Dorado.

Churu, a city in Rajasthan, recorded the country's highest temperature of 48.9 Celsius on Monday, according to the Meteorological Department.

Churu has issued a heat wave advisory and government hospitals have prepared emergency wards with extra air conditioners, coolers and medicines, said Ramratan Sonkariya, additional district magistrate for Churu.

Water is also being poured on the roads of Churu, known as the gateway to the Thar desert, to keep the temperature down and prevent them from melting, Sonkariya added.

A farmer from Sikar district in Rajasthan died on Sunday due to heatstroke, state government officials said.

Media reported on Friday that 17 had died over the past three weeks due to a heatwave in Telangana. A state official said it would confirm the number of deaths only after the causes had been ascertained.

The temperature in New Delhi touched 44.6C on Sunday. One food delivery app, Zomato, asked its customers to greet delivery staff with a glass of cold water.

Heatwave warnings were issued on Monday for some places in western Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh state.

The monsoon, which brings down the heat, is likely to begin on the southern coast on June 6, the weather office said last month.

The three-month, pre-monsoon season, which ended on May 31, was the second driest in the last 65 years, India's only private forecaster, Skymet, said, with a national average of 99 mm of rain against the normal average of 131.5 mm for the season.

At least three deaths were reported in Mumbai due to the pre-monsoon showers which ravaged the city late on Saturday.

The deceased, including two minors, were killed after being electrocuted. Flight operations were also affected in the city, with domestic, international and cargo carriers being delayed up to 90 minutes.

Road and rail commutation was also hit as traffic snarls were caused due to waterlogging in some parts of the city.

The local trains, known as the lifeline of Mumbai, were also slowed down or briefly halted on some routes due to the incessant rainfall combined with the thunder strikes.

The Jet Airways announced last evening that all its flights travelling to and from from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will be delayed by up to 45 minutes till at least 11:30 pm.

A Mumbai-bound SriLankan Airlines flight was diverted to Ahmedabad, whereas, a couple of GoAir and Qatar Airways flight were also diverted to Gujarat.

Apart from Mumbai, heavy rainfall was experienced in neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Pune. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) state unit, the showers were not those of monsoon.

"This is pre-monsoon rainfall. The monsoon winds are yet to hit Maharashtra. The weather system is set in Kerala and the currents are expected to move to Goa and Maharashtra in the next 5-6 days," said a spokesperson of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre.

3 electrocuted to death as pre-monsoon showers ravage Mumbai, flights affected

Flight operations at the Mumbai airport are likely to be affected for two days as the the private aerodrome operator today announced the closure of the main runway for six hours daily for pre-monsoon maintenance work.

The closure of the main runway, 09/27, is expected to put passengers at inconvenience in view of the suspension of a good number of services by various airlines during the period, sources said.

The Mumbai airport is the primary base of Jet Airways and a bulk of its operations, both domestic and international, are carried out from here.

"The main runway of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) handled by GVK MIAL, will be non-operational on April 9 and 10, between 1100 hrs and 1700 hrs on account of pre-monsoon maintenance activities," the Mumbai International

Airport Limited (MIAL) said in a statement, issued about an hour before the commencement of the runway closure.

Passengers are requested to connect with their respective airlines, said MIAL, the private airport operator.

The Mumbai airport, which is the second busiest in the country, has two crossing runways -- 09/27 (the main) and 14/32 (the secondary runway).

While the primary runway can handle up to 48 arrivals and departures per hour, the secondary runway has a capacity of 35 movements per hour.

On an average, there are 970 flight arrivals and departures at the Mumbai airport every day.&nbsp
