Archaeologists unearth 'slave room' in Pompeii

There is probably no culture or civilization which has not had an array of food, and a group of&nbsp;archaeologists have found yet another evidence of that.

Archaeologists in Pompeii have made a remarkable discovery in the city which was buried in a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. They have unearthed a hot food and drinks shop in the buried city. This shop, as per the experts, is equivalent to the modern-age food street.

"This is an extraordinary find. It's the first time we are excavating an entire termopolium," said Massimo Ossana, director of the Pompeii archaeological park.

Unveiled on Saturday, the shop was known as&nbsp;termopolium, which is Latin for 'hot drinks counter'. It was discovered&nbsp;in the archaeological park's Regio V site, which is not yet open to the general public.

The&nbsp;archaeologists were also successful in scraping of traces of food from nearly 2,000 years ago. The scrapings were found in deep terra cotta jars that were used for hot food and were placed by lowering into a counter with circular holes.

Traces of pork, fish, snails and beef were also found in several containers, which points that animals were used in several dishes being served at the counter.

In the discovery, it can be seen that the front of the counter used to be decorated with brightly-coloured&nbsp;frescoes. Some of the illustrations were also of animals, which the experts believe were the ones being served/used in food items, such as chicken and two ducks hanging upside down.

Archaeologists also found a decorated bronze drinking bowl known as a patera, ceramic jars used for cooking stews and soups, wine flasks and amphora.

"Our preliminary analyses shows that the figures drawn on the front of the counter, represent, at least in part, the food and drink that were sold there," said Valeria Amoretti, a site anthropologist.

Pompeii is a town to southeast of Naples which is believed to be home to nearly 13,000 people before it was burnt to ash after a deadly volcanic eruption. Archaeologists started uncovering the buried town near 1750, and as of now about two-thirds of the town has been uncovered.

Skeletal remains of a rich man and his male slave from nearly 2,000 years ago were discovered in an archaeological park in Pompeii, Italy.

The officials at the&nbsp;archaeological park in Italy confirmed the discovery on Sunday. Parts of skulls and bones were found during an excavation of the ruins of an ancient and elegant villa that held a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea on the outskirts of a Roman city, which disappeared during the period of 79 AD.

This area is the same one where remains of&nbsp;three harnessed horses were found in 2017.

It is being believed the first skeleton is of a rich man and the second one is of his 'male slave', both of whom were trying to run to safety after the&nbsp;Mount Vesuvius erupted. The two were, assumably, saved from the eruption. However, they got engulfed by a powerful volcanic blast that took place the next morning. This morning blast, as per the experts, "apparently invaded the area from many points, surrounding and burying the victims in ash."

The skeletons were discovered in a lying position. The two were lying next to each other on their backs and were covered in a layer of grey ash which was reportedly at least 2 metres deep.

"The victims were probably looking for shelter in the cryptoporticus, in this underground space, where they thought they were better protected," explained&nbsp;Massimo Osanna, the director-general of the archaeological park run by the jurisdiction of the Italian Culture Ministry.

The&nbsp;Mount Vesuvius is still an active volcano.

A Canadian tourist who stole mosaic tiles, parts of an amphora and a ceramics piece from the city of Pompeii 15 years ago, returned them saying they brought "bad luck".

The woman, identified as Nicole sent a package containing the artefacts to a travel agent in the southern Italian city of Pompeii, along with a confession letter.&nbsp;

She wrote that she was in her early 20s when she visited the city's archaeological park in 2005 and the robbery caused a number of misfortunes to her that includes getting breast cancer twice and being hit by a financial crisis.&nbsp;

"The last time ending in a double mastectomy. My family and I also had financial problems. We’re good people and I don’t want to pass this curse on to my family or children."

"Please, take them back, they bring bad luck," she said as she sought "forgiveness from God".

She said she committed the theft as she wanted to possess a piece of history that "nobody could have", but the artefacts had "so much negative energy … linked to that land of destruction".&nbsp;

Pompeii was covered in volcanic ash after the gigantic eruption of the Mount Vesuvius in AD79. It was buried until it was rediscovered in the 16th century, which led to an understanding of how life used to be in ancient times.&nbsp;
