"I have many good friends in the Opposition. We do eat food together once or twice a year. Long time back when I was not even the Chief Minister (of Gujarat), I had gone to Parliament for some work. There Ghulam Nabi Azad and I were having a friendly conversation. When we came out media people asked, how can you be friends with Azad as you belong to RSS. Ghulam Nabi gave a good answer. Hum dono saath khade the, bola dekho bhai bahar jo aap log sochte ho, aisa nahi hai. Maybe the way we the people of all the organisations are connected as a family it can't be imagined outside)," Prime Minister Modi said in an interaction with actor Akshay Kumar.

"When Mamata didi came to know about it, she too started sending me Bengali sweets," he added.

Interestingly, Mamata has mostly been critical about Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and has openly opposed their various initiatives including Goods and Services Tax (GST) and demonetisation.

On Sunday, Mamata had accused Prime Minister Modi of causing hardships to the people through demonetisation and said the electorate in West Bengal will pay back by not casting a "single vote" for him.

"In the (2014) elections, Narendra Modi's BJP party had won. But, in the last five years, the government has betrayed Bengal. He (Modi) is coming here and saying lies. He comes flying to Bengal at the time of elections and is nowhere to be seen in other times," she said at a public rally.

Before that on April 4, Mamata Banerjee had even termed Prime Minister Modi as "Hitler's uncle".

A day before that she called Modi as "expiry babu" and said, "His government has expired. You (Modi) said in Siliguri that we did not do anything for the poor. What have you done in the last five years? I have never seen a Prime Minister telling these many lies. Do not speak lies every day."

India Election Watch: Know Your Candidate, who is Farooq Abdullah?

The Supreme Court of India asked the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-narendra-modi-election-commission-stalls-release-of-modi-biopic-209258">Election Commision</a> on Monday to watch the biopic on Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-narendra-modi-biopic-supreme-court-refuses-to-stay-release-of-film-208956">Narendra Modi</a> and submit its report by Friday. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi was hearing a plea challenging the commission's ban on the release of the biopic till the general elections are over.

The court agreed to examine a plea against the ban and directed the Election Commission to submit in sealed cover its decision posting the matter for consideration on April 22.

The film's producers had moved the top court after the Election Commission had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-narendra-modi-biopic-director-omung-kumar-if-releasing-the-film-at-the-time-of-elections-gets-box-office-results-then-why-not-209220">banned the film</a> from releasing before elections.

The poll panel had last week banned the screening of the biopic during the current poll period, saying any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media.

The commission, in a separate order, had also directed the producers not to exhibit the film titled 'PM Narendra Modi' "till further orders".

Acting on the complaints of political parties, including the Congress, the poll panel had asserted that any biopic material with the potential to disturb the level playing field should not be displayed in the area where Model Code of Conduct was in force.

The EC order came after the apex court on Tuesday disposed of the petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the release of the biopic, saying the poll panel was the right forum to decide the issue.

The commission's order came on April 10, a day before it was to be released, coinciding with the first phase of Lok Sabha elections. Votes for all 543 seats will be counted on May 23 after the end of the seven-phase polling on May 19.

Ban on Modi biopic: Watch the film and submit report, Supreme Court directs Election Commission

There seems to be no end to this drama anytime soon. Two days after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-narendra-modi-election-commission-stalls-release-of-modi-biopic-209258">Election Commission stalled the release </a>of 'PM Narendra Modi' during the election season, the makers have moved the Supreme Court challenging the decision.&nbsp;

The matter has been listed for an early hearing and the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the matter on 15th April now.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the Election Commission had stalled the Modi biopic stating the content violated the Model Code Of Conduct. The EC had stated that the film would only be allowed to release after the general Lok Sabha elections get over. The makers had planned to release it on 11th April.&nbsp;

PM Narendra Modi gets highest civilian award of Russia, Order of St Andrew

A day after the Supreme Court dismissed the stay order on the release of 'PM Narendra Modi', the Election Commission has now stalled Modi's biopic that stars Vivek Oberoi in the lead.

The film was scheduled to release on 11th April across India.&nbsp;

The film's release has been stalled till the Lok Sabha election process is not completed. 'Any biopic that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in electronic media,'the commission said in a statement.&nbsp;

The EC has stated that the film disturbs the level playing field and hence it will be released only after the election gets over.&nbsp;

The EC will also set up a committee to examine the film content before clearing it.&nbsp;

Earlier <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-narendra-modi-biopic-director-omung-kumar-if-releasing-the-film-at-the-time-of-elections-gets-box-office-results-then-why-not-209220">in an interview to WION,</a> the film's director Omung Kumar had stated that it was not a propaganda film. " If it's coming at&nbsp;the time of elections and if I get a little more box office results for my film then why not? PM Narendra Modi: Election Commission stalls release of Modi biopic

In a massive relief to the makers of ‘PM Narendra Modi’ biopic, the Supreme Court of India today refused to intervene in the release of the film.&nbsp;

A petition was filed in the court to stall the release of the film during the general elections in the country.&nbsp;

To this, a bench led by the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the Court cannot step in unless it was clear about what the film was “seeking to depict” and what petitioner Aman Panwar, a Congress activist, is objecting to about the movie.

Gogoi asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu&nbsp;Singhvi, who represents Panwar, “We have not seen the film. We do not know the contents of the film. How can we order anything without knowing what we are ordering about?” asks CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

'PM Narendra Modi' biopic: Supreme Court refuses to stay release of film

A plea filed against the release of the film ‘PM Narendra Modi’ will be heard in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Actor Vivek Oberoi who stars in and as the current PM in the film spoke about the impending case and his political ambitions to WION in an exclusive conversation.

On his film facing roadblocks and release date having been shifted from April 5 to 11 (tentatively), Vivek said, “It’s a passion project, something that’s taken an entire team to put this together at this scale. But then to meet this resistance, to be labelled, targetted, attacked -- its painful. I didn’t think that a simple, humble movie would intimidate powerful and important people that they would go all out to get it to shut down. When the High Court supported us on this, they took it to it the honourable Supreme Court.”

Being hopeful for a positive outcome, he said, “There’s a bunch of crazy resources thrown at us. I believe that the fundamental right of freedom to speech and expression will be upheld by the Supreme Court. I believe we will get their blessing and we will release, this time around on the 11th of April.”

Questions have been raised on why the film has been scheduled for a release during the time of elections, Vivek defended the maker’s stance and said, “It's my fundamental right as a filmmaker to make a film that I believe in and to release it at the time when I want. Nobody questions when a film is released on Eid, Christmas or Diwali, then why am I being questioned if I want to release a film on election? Those are festivals that come every once a year, this is a festival that comes every 5 years. It’s a festival of democracy.”

The actor also clarified that the makers went through all formalities to ensure that the film would not face any issue. He said, “The Election Commission has cleared us. We have been through every single due diligence, every single process. We have submitted all (documents) for financial scrutiny and have submitted all that was required. It’s an independent project. After getting clear, there have been these insults and accusations are being hurled left, right and centre.”

He continued, “It’s shocking that people with such gravitas, high political standing that you look up to would turn around and throw baseless allegations at you -- at you being some stooge, prop up or back channel funding and random stuff like that. It’s pretty sad.”

Vivek did not dodge any questions and was sporting when asked if this was all being done at the time of elections because he has some political ambitions, of contesting elections or campaigning this time around. He laughed and said, “Right. Let’s put into perspective. Why would I want to be an MP, when I can be the PM on screen?”

As for the case, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/supreme-court-agrees-to-hear-petition-seeking-stay-on-release-of-modi-biopic-207847">petition </a>was filed by Congress spokesperson and lawyer Aman Panwar in the Supreme Court. Vivek Oberoi: Didn’t think that a simple, humble movie would intimidate powerful people

The Election Commission is unlikely to take before Monday a final decision on whether to restrain the release of a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pm-modi-biopic-strong-willed-vivek-oberoi-says-undeterred-by-moves-of-opponents-208276">biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi </a>till the Lok Sabha polls are over, as the Supreme Court is slated to hear the issue that day.

The EC has been made a party in a plea filed by a Congress worker who wants the top court to delay the film's release claiming it "disturbs" level-playing field for candidates in the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources said, now any decision will be taken after evaluating the developments in the top court.

However, there is a strong view in the EC that it should not restrain the release of the biopic -- "PM Narendra Modi" -- and should leave it to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to take a call on the issue, sources said.

Opposition parties including the Congress have alleged the film will give undue advantage to the BJP in electioneering and its release should be delayed until the elections are over.

The seven-phased Lok Sabha polls begin on April 11 and end on May 19.&nbsp;

The model code of conduct, which among other things, calls for an even playing field for all parties and candidates, came into force on March 10 when the elections were announced.

"PM Narendra Modi" is now scheduled to be released on April 11, the day the first phase of polling takes place.

A functionary pointed? to at least two Supreme Court rulings about movies.

In one of the rulings, the SC had directed the West Bengal government to ensure satirical film 'Bhobishyoter Bhoot' is screened without obstruction. The movie was critical of the then state chief minister.

"We also have to see the latest Delhi High court ruling which said the biopic screening should be decided by the EC," he said, adding that the model code is silent on films and thus it remains a "grey area".

He said the EC has to keep the court verdicts in mind.

The Commission had earlier sent a notice to the makers of the film following a meeting with a Congress delegation, which sought a ban on its release ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

On Monday, the Bombay High Court disposed a plea against the release of the biopic. The court had said that the Election Commission will deal with the issue.&nbsp;
