Cricket has returned to the Olympic Games for the first time in over a century and will be part of the LA28 program four years from now. Former India coach Rahul Dravid feels the BCCI, the selected players, and the coaching staff that time must be fully prepared to bring the gold medal home. During a chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (July 4), Dravid expressed his thoughts on the same.

The Indian Team met PM Modi at his residence in New Delhi shortly after landing from Barbados, where they won their second T20 World Cup title. The Men in Blue first visited the ITC Maurya Hotel before reaching the PM house for a quick chat and breakfast.

PM Modi spoke with everyone about their experiences while mentioning cricket’s return to the Olympic Games.

Team India and head coach Dravid appreciated the effort by everyone concerned to bring cricket back to the Olympics, and said India has a chance to win a gold medal at the Olympics in Los Angeles.

Though none of the star players, including Dravid, Virat, Rohit and even Jadeja, will be around by then, the head coach feels anyone in charge of the setup must be fully prepared to bring the glory home.

"Modiji, we cricketers don't get the opportunity to participate in the Olympics. But now cricket is going to be part of the Olympics. It's going to be big for the cricketers, the nation and the cricket board. We have to do well in the tournament. And to be with the other sportspersons, to learn from them, is a great thing. I think it's a proud moment for cricket to be part of the Olympics," Dravid said during the chat with PM Modi.

"I am confident that the BCCI and the players and the coaches at that time will be prepared. I am confident that from this team, a lot of people will be part of the team. Winning a gold in the Olympics is a great matter of pride and happiness. We need to fully prepare for that," he concluded.

‘India will be fully prepared to win Olympic gold in cricket’ – Rahul Dravid to PM Modi

Veteran batter Virat Kohli poured his heart out in a chat with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (July 4) in New Delhi. Kohli, who won the Player of the Match for his brilliant 76 in the T20 World Cup Final against South Africa, revealed he felt underconfident heading into the title match. However, just after he struck three fours off the first four balls, Kohli went to his Captain and non-striker, Rohit Sharma, saying ‘what a game this is.’

Speaking to PM Modi, Kohli said he loved every moment he lived in that final and will cherish the victory forever. Kohli continued that while he felt he wasn’t contributing to the team’s results in the lead-up to the final, head coach Dravid’s words gave him the confidence needed.

"I will always cherish that day (of the final). Throughout the tournament, I was not able to make the contributions that I wanted to make. At one time, I told Rahul bhai, 'I haven't done justice to myself and the team till now'. He said, 'When the situation will arise, I trust that you will perform', Kohli said.

Surrendering to the situation

A veteran like Kohli has been in the position he was in the final multiple times in his career and knew what exactly he needed to do to get back into form and deliver for the team on D-Day.

“When wickets fell early, I understood that I had to surrender to the situation, for the team. The only thing I was focussing on was what's necessary for the team. I felt I was pushed into that zone. I was into that moment.”

“Later, I realised that whatever is supposed to happen, it happens. It was bound to happen to me and to the team (title win). From the situation we won the final, we lived each and every single delivery towards the end. From the point where the final turned around. What was going through us, we cannot explain,” Kohli concluded.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju indicated on Wednesday (July 3) that the government will request Speaker Om Birla to initiate privilege proceedings against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha.

The union minister said that under Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, the Speaker can direct a member to provide validation of claims made in the House, failing which the matter could head to a privilege committee.

“Action will proceed according to the rule under which the notice or appeal has been made. According to the provisions of the rules, the Honourable Speaker can direct the member to provide details explaining why and under what circumstances he misled the House. The member may then need to substantiate his statements, apologize, or take whatever action is deemed necessary,” Rijiju told reporters.

LoP Rahul Gandhi’s speech, which he delivered in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (July 2), had led to an outburst by the members of the Cabinet, including the Prime Minister, defence minister and home minister, among others.

Gandhi locked horns with PM Modi on more than one instance during his speech. During the speech, home minister Amit Shah stood up to ask Speaker Om Birla for “protection”. “You are going over the rules to give them concessions, we need your protection,” Shah had urged the Speaker.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, told Speaker Om Birla, during his address as part of the Motion of Thanks debate, to take action against Gandhi.

"Parliament was misled yesterday ... We cannot safeguard parliamentary democracy without addressing what happened seriously. We should not dismiss these actions as merely childish ... I say this because the intentions behind them are not good," the Prime Minister had said.

Rijiju also said that after the various chants in the House during oath-taking, Speaker Om Birla formed a committee which has passed a new rule that henceforth no political chants will be allowed during oath-taking.

“The oath-taking will be regulated, it is a solemn occasion,” Rijiju said.

PM Narendra Modi was speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on President's address and took jibes at the Opposition.

PM said that it's high time now that the Congress should accept the verdict of people and that NDA had won its third successive term in office.

Here are latest updates:

PM Modi attacks Congress over Manipur issue, said, "Stop politicising Manipur issue, one day Manipur will reject you."

- On the Opposition's walkout from Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge accused the PM of lying in his Rajya Sabha speech, "We walked out because the PM was addressing the House on the President's address and made some incorrect statements. It's his habit to lie and say things that are untrue. I simply asked him, when he was talking about the Constitution, that his people didn't create the Constitution—they were against it."

- "I was just clarifying who supported and opposed the Constitution. The RSS has opposed the Constitution. They burned effigies of BR Ambedkar and Pandit Nehru. He repeatedly claims that we disrespected BR Ambedkar, saying it both in the Lok Sabha and today. I wanted to highlight what Babasaheb said in the Constituent Assembly and what the RSS has written in the Organiser," Kharge added.

- PM Narendra Modi took a jibe at Congress over Lok Sabha 2024 elections. He said, "With these election results, not only is there a surge in the capital market, but there is also an atmosphere of joy worldwide. Amid this, Congress people are also happy. I can't understand the reason for this joy. Is it joy for the hattrick of losses? Is it joy for falling to the nervous 90s? Is it joy for another failed launch? I even saw Kharge ji full of energy. Perhaps Kharge ji has served his party a lot because the blame for this loss, which should have been attributed to someone, was saved by him, and he stood like a wall instead. Whenever such a situation arises, a Dalit and backward have to bear the brunt, and that family remains safe. The same was seen here too."

- "You would have seen the issue with the Lok Sabha Speaker. There, too, their defeat was certain, but whom did they push forward? A Dalit. They knew he would lose, yet they fielded him. In the President and Vice President elections of 2022, they fielded Sushil Kumar Shinde; let the Dalit lose, they themselves have nothing to lose. In 2017, when defeat was certain, they fielded Meira Kumar. Congress has an anti-SC/ST/OBC mindset, due to which they kept humiliating former President Ram Nath Kovind. With this mindset, they left no stone unturned in insulting the first tribal woman President of the country and used words that no one else would," PM said.

- If this election was to save the Constitution, then the people of the nation chose us for it...1977 election saved the Constitution," PM said.

- PM Modi also raised the Bengal flogging incident, saying, "The Opposition's selective attitude on atrocities against women is very worrying...I have seen a video from Bengal on social media where a woman was being beaten...The incident which happened in Sandeshkhali....But even the senior leaders (of the opposition) have not said a word about it."

- Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar criticised the Opposition, saying that despite the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) being given a chance to speak, they have insulted the constitution.

- "I urged them that the LoP was given adequate time to speak without any interruptions. Today, they did not leave the House behind, they have left behind dignity. Today, they did not show me their back, they showed it to the Constitution of India. They did not insult me or you, they insulted the oath of the Constitution that they took. There can be no bigger insult to the Constitution of India than this...I condemn their conduct...It is an occasion where they have challenged the Indian Constitution. They outraged the spirit of Indian Constitution, they have disregarded the oath they have undertaken...Indian Constitution is not something to hold in your hands, it is the book to way of life. I hope that they will self-introspect and walk the path of duty."

- "India has taken decisive steps towards women-led development and today we are its results. We have also worked in the areas of women's health, sanitation and wellness," PM Modi said while speaking in the Rajya Sabha.

- "Opposition has insulted the Upper House. The country has defeated them and they don't have any other option but to scream and shout. Slogans and chaos and running away is their fate now," PM Modi said.

- Opposition MPs protest, raise slogans and walk out as PM Modi speaks on Motion of Thanks to President's Address. The Opposition MPs say that the LoP was not allowed to speak and that he should be allowed for the same.

- As they walk out, PM Modi says, "The country is watching that those who spread lies do not have the strength to hear the truth. Those who do not have the courage to face truth, do not have courage to listen to the answers to questions were raised in these discussions. They are insulting the Upper House, the glorious tradition of the Upper House."

- "During Congress’ tenure, there was a scheme for Rs 60,000 crore farmers' loan waiver but names of the needy small farmers were not even included in the list of beneficiaries," he said.

- The PM says, "I have always said – what we did in 10 years is only the appetiser. The main course starts now. The coming five years are about a decisive fight against poverty."

- "In the democratic journey of India, after many decades, the people of the country have chosen a government for the third consecutive time. But some people deliberately ignore this achievement, some people can't understand it, and some have tried to overshadow this important decision made by the people of this country," the PM said.

- "I would like to thank my friends in Congress. Who said this will be a 1/3rd government. They are right. We have had a government for 10 years, 20 more are yet to come. I hope it comes true," PM Modi said, while mocking Congress.

- "There have been many like me in whose family there was not even a sarpanch or pradhan – but they are serving the country in important positions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Upper House on Wednesday (July 3) after the Lok Sabha witnessed the government and the Opposition go nose-to-nose in a debate on Tuesday (July 2). PM Narendra Modi was speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on President's address and took jibes at the Opposition. Here are latest updates: PM Modi attacks Congress over Manipur issue, said, "Stop politicising Manipur issue, one day Manipur will reject you." - On the Opposition's walkout from Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge accused the PM of lying in his Rajya Sabha speech, "We walked out because the PM was addressing the House on the President's address and made some incorrect statements. It's his habit to lie and say things that are untrue. I simply asked him, when he was talking about the Constitution, that his people didn't create the Constitution—they were against it." - "I was just clarifying who supported and opposed the Constitution. The same was seen here too." Also read: UP CM Adityanath vows to punish accused behind incident that took 121 lives - "You would have seen the issue with the Lok Sabha Speaker. - PM Modi also raised the Bengal flogging incident, saying, "The Opposition's selective attitude on atrocities against women is very worrying...I have seen a video from Bengal on social media where a woman was being beaten...The incident which happened in Sandeshkhali....But even the senior leaders (of the opposition) have not said a word about it." - Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar criticised the Opposition, saying that despite the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) being given a chance to speak, they have insulted the constitution. I hope that they will self-introspect and walk the path of duty." - "India has taken decisive steps towards women-led development and today we are its results. We have also worked in the areas of women's health, sanitation and wellness," PM Modi said while speaking in the Rajya Sabha. They are insulting the Upper House, the glorious tradition of the Upper House." - "During Congress’ tenure, there was a scheme for Rs 60,000 crore farmers' loan waiver but names of the needy small farmers were not even included in the list of beneficiaries," he said. - The PM says, "I have always said – what we did in 10 years is only the appetiser. At Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, the journey from Pt Jawaharlal Nehru to PM Narendra Modi has been displayed in a beautiful manner. There is no political agenda...This is the first such effort that the entire country should get to know of the contribution of each PM, appreciate it, learn from it and pay tribute to them," the Union Minister said.

Earlier on Monday (July 1), the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 11 am on Tuesday (July 2).
