One of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, Mayon, fired a dark column of ash over thousands of metres into the sky in a "moderately explosive eruption" on Friday (October 30). The eruption lasted nearly six minutes, sending alert status up to Level 3 in Albay, according to the state seismology office. Following the eruption, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in towns and in the vicinity of Mount Mayon. In response, the country's volcano institute raised the alert level from 2 to 3 on its 0-5 scale, calling for evacuations within six kilometres (3.7 miles) of the crater.

<h3>New phase of magmatic eruption</h3>The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed in its bulletin that the 3,000-metre (nearly 10,000 feet) ash column gradually moved southwest onto nearby population centres. "Mayon is in a new phase of magmatic eruption, with increased chances of lava flows and hazardous PDCs (pyroclastic density currents)... affecting the upper to middle slopes of the volcano in the immediate days to weeks," the bulletin said. It called on local officials to evacuate areas near the crater, citing the threat "due to PDCs, lava flows, rockfalls and other volcanic hazards", and warned aircraft to steer clear of flying close to the mountain. Standing 2,462 metres (8,000 feet) tall in a striking, near-perfect cone shape roughly 330 kilometres southeast of Manila, Mayon is one of three Philippine volcanoes that have shown heightened activity this year, though none has produced a major eruption so far.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/beijing-s-naval-expansion-new-images-hint-at-2027-launch-for-china-s-fourth-aircraft-carrier-1793340525189">Beijing’s naval expansion: New images hint at 2027 launch for China’s fourth aircraft carrier</a>&nbsp;Back in June 2023, authorities relocated more than 12,000 people from Mayon’s lower slopes to evacuation centres as a precaution against ash and toxic gas emissions from the crater. Seismic and volcanic activity are routine occurrences in the Philippines, a consequence of its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where shifting tectonic plates meet. The country’s deadliest eruption in modern history remains Mount Pinatubo’s 1991 blast, which claimed more than 800 lives and sent an ash cloud drifting thousands of kilometres across the region.

'Magmatic intrusion': Philippines on alert as Taal volcano spews gas

Taal volcano in the Philippines could <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/philippines-alert-issued-flights-grounded-as-volcano-spews-ash-lava-273838">spew lava and ash for weeks</a>, authorities warned Tuesday, leaving tens of thousands in limbo after they fled their homes fearing a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/philippines-suspends-manila-airport-flights-as-volcano-spews-ash-273803">massive eruption</a>.

The crater of the volcano exploded to life with towering clouds of ash and jets of red-hot lava on Sunday, forcing those living around the mountain south of Manila to rush to safety.

Many people abandoned livestock and pets as well as homes full of belongings after authorities sounded an alert warning that an "explosive eruption" could come imminently.

"We left everything apart from what we're wearing," said Robert Cadiz, a 47-year-old fisherman among some 30,000 who took refuge in shelters. "We were terrified."

Gerald Aseoche, 30, who left with his four young children and a few possessions, has missed work to stay with them as the volcano belches out lava, and earthquakes tied to the eruption rattle the region.

"I am hoping this won't go on too long because I will lose my job if I can't report to work immediately," Aseoche, a house painter, told AFP at an evacuation centre.

Taal is one of the most active volcanoes in a nation hit periodically by eruptions and earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" -- a zone of intense seismic activity.

Philippine Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon warned that the group was "preparing for the worst" and urged people to keep away from the volcano.

"Bring your animals and livestock to evacuation centres if you must," he added.

The Taal eruption has been putting on a stunning and terrifying display, including an ash cloud illuminated with lightning bolts. It shot dark-grey columns 800 metres (half a mile) in the sky.

Eruptions have lasted months

Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismological agency, said Taal's previous eruptions have lasted as long as months so it was impossible to predict an end to the current activity.

However, he said the alert warning of a potentially catastrophic "explosive eruption" may remain in place for weeks, depending on developments.

"We have a protocol of waiting for several days, sometimes two weeks, to make sure that indeed... volcano activity has essentially stopped," he told AFP.

The volcano dramatically burst with activity on Sunday, shooting massive plumes of ash 15 kilometres (nine miles) into the sky that then rained down on the region.

Falling ash pushed aviation officials to temporarily shut down Manila's main international airport, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and stranding tens of thousands of travellers.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport resumed reduced operations on Monday and was gradually recovering on Tuesday, but a backlog of cancelled flights resulted in ongoing pain for travellers.&nbsp;

Taal's last eruption was in 1977, but it has a long history of activity. In 1965 the volcano, which is a popular tourist attraction set in a picturesque lake, killed some 200 people.

The country's most powerful explosion in recent years was the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, about 100 kilometres northwest of Manila, which killed more than 800 people.

Tens of thousands face uncertainty as Philippine volcano spews lava

Philippines braces for a hazardous volcanic eruption and its ash and lava spewed out of the Taal volcano, the second most active volcano of the region. This has forced the evacuation of at least 10000 people from the nearby region and is also vulnerable to quakes and Tsunamis. Watch report: #WION #WIONNews #Philippines #Volcano #Taal #TaalVolcano

Philippines braces for eruption: Taal volcano spews ash

Officials have also warned of a possible "<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-51086961">volcanic tsunami</a>", which can be caused by falling debris after an eruption, reported BBC.&nbsp;

Homes and streets in the region surrounding the Taal volcano, which blasted on Sunday along with a series of earthquakes, were coated in fine grit and nearly 10,000 people had sought refuge in evacuation centres.
