The US authorities have allowed two-shot Moderna vaccine doses for children aged six months to five years and a three-shot Pfizer regimen for children aged six months to four years.

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited a vaccination centre in Washington as the president urged parents to get their kids vaccinated. The US had begun vaccinating the elderly in December 2020 as the pandemic created havoc around the world.

"This is no time for politics. It's about parents being able to do everything they can to keep their children safe," Biden said.

Biden said more money was needed for vaccines while adding that&nbsp;"there's going to be another pandemic, we have to think ahead."&nbsp;

The US is the worst-hit country due to the virus with over 86 million COVID-19&nbsp;cases and more than 1,013,900&nbsp;fatalities. The country was hit by the Omicron wave this year with some US states witnessing a surge in cases in recent months.

COVID-19: US begins vaccinating children under 5

A US medical panel on Wednesday recommended coronavirus vaccine to be administered to&nbsp;children aged under five.

The expert team was convened by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Pfizer had sought authorization for three doses of three micrograms to be given to kids aged six months to four years, while Moderna had asked for authorisation for two doses of higher 25 micrograms for children between six months to five years.

The authorisation for the vaccine is expected soon with reports indicating the first shots may be due from next week. The FDA said both vaccines were safe and effective.

The US has fully vaccinated 76 per cent of adults with 90 per cent having received both doses. Moderna had reportedly tested its vaccine on 6,000 children and Pfizer claimed it had tested nearly 4,000 kids during the trials.

US FDA panel recommends Pfizer, Moderna shots for babies & young kids

The European Medicines Agency's(EMA) on Friday gave its approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/whos-tedros-urges-countries-and-drug-makers-to-get-more-vaccine-to-poorer-countries-387875">vaccine</a> to be given to 12-15-year-olds.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/in-normal-fridge-european-regulator-allows-flexible-storage-conditions-for-pfizer-vaccine-385883">European Union</a> is already using vaccines for 16-year-olds and older teenagers.

Marco Cavaleri, the EMA's head of vaccine strategy, said: "As anticipated, the EMA's Committee for Human Medicines has today approved the use of the vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech in adolescents from 12 to 15 years."

Cavaleri added that the vaccine was being fast-tracked for young people even as German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that authorities will allow vaccination for children over 12 after EMA's approval.

"Mastering the current crisis is a huge task on its own but in future too, there will be virus mutations and new pathogenic agents so we should prepare as best as possible for future pandemic threats," the German chancellor said.

The German Chancellor also called on EU partners including G7 and the G20 countries to help boost the&nbsp;global vaccine production.

Meanwhile, the UK on Friday gave its approval to the single-shot coronavirus vaccine developed by Johnson &amp; Johnson.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock lauded the move&nbsp;saying that it was a "further boost to the UK's hugely successful vaccination programme."
