The United Nations refugee agency said on Saturday (February 4) that seven Haitian migrants died in the Andean highlands of Peru as their efforts to cross into Bolivia were stymied by anti-government protests which have been going on since early December 2022. Speaking to the news agency AFP, Iris Bano Romero, a spokesperson for the refugee agency, said that six deaths, including that of a minor, occurred in Desaguadero town, news agency AFP reported. Romero added the seventh death occurred in the town of Juli.&nbsp;

Apart from these seven deaths, two other people were hospitalised with pneumonia since Thursday with one of them in critical condition, the UN official said. Romero further said that blockades erected due to the political crisis in Peru made life difficult for both locals and migrants, making it hard to obtain basics like food and fuel, or to pay for rent and other services.

Forty-eight people have been killed so far in the anti-government demonstrations in Peru. On Friday (February 3), the congressional committee blocked another bill to advance general elections to this year, which President Dina Boluarte hoped would quell the ongoing unrest.

Speaking to reporters, Alejandro Cavero, a right-wing member of Congress who sought to halt the bill, said that he raised parliamentary objections in a meeting of the Constitutional Committee before the bill could even be debated.

"The regulations of Congress clearly stipulate that a matter that has already been shelved cannot be discussed again in the committee until the next legislative session," Cavero, a member of the committee said.&nbsp;

A day later, a Roman Catholic Cardinal voiced dismay that Congress declined to advance elections to defuse the unrest. "It hurts our souls that they have (not acted on) a proposal to move up elections," Cardinal Pedro Barreto said on Saturday (February 4).&nbsp;

On Friday, Boluarte said that she was considering moving up the general election to later this year, describing the ongoing political crisis as a "quagmire." However, Congress rejected the proposal with 45 votes in favour, 65 against and two abstentions, a report by the news agency AFP said.&nbsp;

Last month, lawmakers had already agreed to an early election in the country from 2026 to April 2024. "With this vote, the constitutional reform proposal for the advancement of elections is rejected," Congress president Jose Williams said on Saturday, after over seven hours of debate.&nbsp;

A total of 47 people have so far been killed in clashes between the police and protesters. On Friday, the US State Department said that it remained concerned about the violent demonstrations in Peru. The State Department called for calm dialogue and for all parties to exercise restraint and non-violence, spokesperson Vedant Patel said during a press conference. &nbsp;

Since the beginning of the protests, demonstrators have placed three demands —&nbsp;the resignation of Dina Boluarte, snap elections and a new constitution for Peru.

On Thursday, the government said that police and soldiers would soon move to dismantle roadblocks erected by the protesters. The decision comes as weeks of roadblocks in Peru's southern regions led to shortages of food and fuel. The AFP report said that as per an autonomous human rights office, another 10 civilians, including two babies, were collateral fatalities when they were unable to get medical treatment or medicines. Apart from the roadblocks, the protesters have also stormed several airports in the country, leading to their temporary closure.&nbsp;

The Peruvian Police on Saturday (January 21) raided a university in the capital city of Lima and arrested more than 200 anti-government protesters on the charges of theft and trespassing. According to a statement issued by the San Marcos University, a group of masked protesters stormed the campus late Friday and expelled security personnel after taking their vests and other equipment. Alfonso Barrenechea, who works with the crime prevention division of the prosecutor's office, told a local radio station PPP that 205 people were arrested for illegally trespassing on the university's premises and for allegedly stealing electronic goods, a report by news agency Reuters said early Sunday.&nbsp;

Peru's interior minister Vicente Romero, meanwhile,&nbsp;told the Canal N news channel that cops intervened after university authorities said some of the squatters were committing crimes, news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Visuals shared by Reuters showed police tanks entering the university, breaking through the gates to allow the personnel inside. The police were then seen escorting multiple protesters to buses. Some of the protesters tried to stop the buses from leaving by blocking the road.&nbsp;

"The police entered with force, they have taken out all the demonstrators who were inside the university, they have entered with tear gas bombs, they assaulted people. I arrived here and saw some demonstrators crying," San Marcos University student Rosmely Torres told the news agency. "We are outraged by what we are going through, it is insurgency," a protester told Reuters.&nbsp;

The incident at the university comes as the violent anti-government protests in Peru continue. The demonstrations have been going on since early December last year when&nbsp;President Pedro Castillo was ousted and Dina Boluarte took charge of the top post. The protesters have demanded the resignation of Dina Boluarte, snap elections and a new constitution for Peru.

Forty-six people have died in clashes with security forces so far and nine have died in accidents linked to the protests, the Reuters report said.&nbsp;

On Friday, in the Cusco region, the gateway to Machu Picchu, Glencore's major Antapaccay copper mine suspended operations after protesters attacked the premises. Issuing a statement, Cusco's cultural authorities said, "in view of the current social situation in which our region and the country are immersed, the closure of the Inca trail network and Machu Picchu has been ordered, as of January 21 and until further notice".

The protesters reached Lima on Thursday, carrying flags and banners criticising the government and the police for deadly clashes in two southern cities- Ayacucho and Juliaca, a report by news agency Reuters said. A building on the San Martin Plaza caught fire late Thursday though it was empty and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Peru's human rights ombudsman announced that one person was killed in Arequipa, adding to two other deaths resulting from clashes on Wednesday. The nationwide toll now stands at 45, the AFP report on Friday said.&nbsp;

Speaking to the news agency on Thursday, Victor Zanabria, head of the Lima Police Force, said "We have 11,800 police officers in the streets to control unrest, we have more than 120 vans and 49 military vehicles, and also the armed forces are participating." However, the protesters remain undeterred and will continue demonstrating till their demands are met.&nbsp;

"We want the usurper Dina Boluarte to step down and call for new elections," one protester Jose De la Rosa told Reuters on Thursday. Another protestor travelling to Lima who did not wish to be identified, said, "We won't forget the pain the police have caused in the town of Juliaca."

Meanwhile, President Boluarte addressed the country on Thursday night and said that protesters who carried out acts of violence will not go unpunished.&nbsp; 
“That was not a peaceful protest. The violent acts that occurred in December and January will not go unpunished. We will be alongside the Prosecutor’s Office checking and opening tax folders of people committing violent acts and destroying private and government property," Boluarte said, Reuters reported. The President also said that she would not get tired of inviting protesters for dialogue, adding "let’s work on the vision this country needs."

Peru unrest spreads; President says violence will not go unpunished

The anti-government protests in Peru continue, with new clashes in Cusco, where almost 22 individuals including 16 civilians and six police officials got injured, health officials claimed. The protests that began last month have left 47 people dead as of now. One of the worst violence erupted in the Puno region on Monday, where a clash with police in Juliaca, claimed lives of 17 and the protesters later attacked and burnt&nbsp;a police officer to death,&nbsp;AP reported.

Amid this attack, the Peruvian government announced a three-day curfew from 8 pm to 4 am in Puno.

The official toll claimed that in total, 39 individuals have been killed in a clash with the police.

The unrest began in December after the ouster and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo following his attempt to dissolve Congress.

The protesters are&nbsp;demanding the current Peruvian President Dina Boluarte resign. She&nbsp;was Castillo's former running mate before becoming the president.&nbsp;

They have also&nbsp;blocked roads against the president, supporting Castillo. These blockages were seen in almost 41 provinces.&nbsp;

Protesters are angry after Castillo's removal and are demanding elections right away, which have already been preponed up from 2026 to April 2024.&nbsp;

Currently, the National Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation against Boluarte and other officials for the protest deaths. To this, Boulrate said that she supports judicial investigations into whether security forces have acted with excessive force.&nbsp;

The anti-government protests in Peru continue, with new clashes in Cusco, where almost 22 individuals including 16 civilians and six police officials got injured, health officials claimed. The protests that began last month have left 47 people dead as of now. One of the worst violence erupted in the Puno region on Monday, where a clash with police in Juliaca, claimed lives of 17 and the protesters later attacked and burnt a police officer to death, AP reported. Amid this attack, the Peruvian government announced a three-day curfew from 8 pm to 4 am in Puno. The official toll claimed that in total, 39 individuals have been killed in a clash with the police. The unrest began in December after the ouster and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo following his attempt to dissolve Congress. She was Castillo's former running mate before becoming the president. They have also blocked roads against the president, supporting Castillo. These blockages were seen in almost 41 provinces. Protesters are angry after Castillo's removal and are demanding elections right away, which have already been preponed up from 2026 to April 2024. Currently, the National Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation against Boluarte and other officials for the protest deaths.
