The study also mentioned that they had initially improved. Preprint means that the study has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal.&nbsp;

Dr Davey Smith, who is the study co-author, said, "It happens all the time. People who are untreated with Covid who then feel better can get symptoms afterward." Dr Smith is also the chief of infectious diseases and global public health at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.&nbsp;

Around 12 per cent of people who have tested for coronavirus, had a "viral rebound", which means days after testing negative, they tested positive again. The study further mentioned that the findings are from people who have taken Paxlovid.&nbsp;

Dr Smith said that the return of symptoms could be worse or maybe not as bad as the first bout. He noted: "It’s just the variability in the natural course of the infection."&nbsp;

As mentioned by NBC News, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that there is a possibility of symptom recurrence in untreated Covid patients.&nbsp;

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had earlier issued an update on virus rebound stating that Paxlovid is recommended for early stage treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases which are at high risk of progression to&nbsp;severe disease.

Coronavirus "rebound" is characterized with the recurrence of symptoms after a person tests negative.

The CDC said Paxlovid prevented hospitalisation, however it added that the virus rebound has been reported to occur between two and eight days after initial recovery and "is characterised by the recurrence of COVID-19 symptoms or a new positive viral test after having tested negative."

"A brief return of symptoms may be part of the natural history of virus in infection in some persons, independent of treatment with Paxlovid and regardless of vaccination status," it said in its advisory. The US health agency added that it led to "mild illness" and there were no reports of "severe disease" with "no evidence" that additional treatment was needed with Paxlovid.

What is Paxlovid?

It is an oral antiviral drug and is available under Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is meant for adults and pediatric patients 12 years and older.

The CDC recommends the treatment should begin within five days as symptoms occur for people who have one or more risk of progression to severe disease. The CDC cautioned the patient should not display evidence of severe renal or hepatic impairment and should not be hospitalised at the time of treatment.
