Twitter had been summoned by the committee today (Monday, February 11) but <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/twitter-ceo-and-senior-officials-refuse-to-appear-before-parliamentary-committee-196223">the company had declined to appear</a> saying the notice was too short.&nbsp;

The summons had been sent out on February 1.&nbsp;

Thakur had hinted earlier that action would be taken against the microblogging site.&nbsp;

"Of course it can be an issue of breach of parliamentary privilege. They are taking advantage of the world's biggest market and are unwilling to answer," IANS quoted Thakur as saying. He added that Twitter's reply has been taken note of by the committee&nbsp;and "we will take a serious note of it".

"It is a very serious subject, and the kind of reply they have given will be discussed in the parliamentary committee, and we will take further action on that," IANS quoted Thakur as saying.

BJP national spokesperson Meenakashi Lekhi had also warned Twitter of "repercussions".&nbsp;

"In this situation, if Twitter is disrespecting the established institution of Parliament, then there are repercussions," she said at a press conference.

"There are repercussions because in any democratic country, institutions need to be respected by the world powers. If there is any violation of any sort, then there are repercussions to those violations...The institutions need to be respected," Lekhi added.

British lawmakers will vote on Tuesday on whether to try to take control of the Brexit process in a series of crunch votes that threaten to pile more pressure on Prime Minister Theresa May.

It would force May to delay Brexit for nine months if her deal is not approved before February 26, and give lawmakers the ability to indefinitely extend the deadline.

Increasing numbers of government ministers have warned they will not accept the prospect of Britain leaving without a deal, which would immediately sever all ties with its largest trading partner.

Conservative leader May is seeking to salvage her agreement, and hopes to win over MPs in another future ballot, despite losing the last by 230 votes.

The government said that this second "meaningful vote" would also be amendable, possibly convincing some MPs not to take any drastic action on Tuesday, knowing they will have another chance.

Internal divisions 
Parliamentary experts also warned that MPs' efforts may be unconstitutional.

"The Commons... cannot legally compel the government to negotiate an arrangement to which it is opposed," King's College London professor Vernon Bogdanor wrote in The Times, adding their plans would constitutionally require a change in government.

Amid the bitter wrangling Queen Elizabeth II appeared to make a rare foray into politics last week, emphasising in a speech the need for Britons to come together to "seek out the common ground".

May's plan B hinges almost entirely on convincing the EU to reexamine the existing deal's so-called backstop proposal, which could see Britain tied to the bloc's trade rules to keep open the border with Ireland.

An amendment potentially up for a vote on Tuesday would call for her to go back to Brussels and secure changes to the backstop.

May reportedly told Tory MPs at a Monday meeting the government will support the measure and would order them to follow suit.

But an ardently pro-Brexit group of Conservative lawmakers led by backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg said they would not back the move because it does not force the reopening of the withdrawal agreement.

The United Kingdom government`s move to not publish the full legal advice based on which it formulated the Brexit plan, was on Tuesday (local time) found to be in contempt of the Parliament.

This marks the first-ever instance where the British government has been found to be in contempt of the Parliament, CNN reported.

The Prime Minister <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/british-government-loses-key-parliament-vote-on-brexit-181516">Theresa May-led Conservative Party government</a> lost the vote&nbsp;by a margin of 18 votes (311 for, 293 against) in the House of Commons, a heavy blow to the government ahead of the five-day debate on the proposed Brexit agreement.

The House of Commons took to Twitter to confirm the outcome of the vote and that ministers were found to be in contempt.

"House of Commons votes 311 to 293 to approve the privilege motion, finding Ministers in contempt and ordering the immediate publication of the full legal advice on the #Brexit deal," the tweet read.

Following the defeat, the government confirmed that it would release the legal advice, which was prepared by Attorney general Geoffrey Cox, on Wednesday.

Prior to the voting, May spoke to the Cabinet about the "candid" legal advice given to ministers, stressing the importance of keeping it confidential.

According to CNN, the Labour Party`s Brexit spokesperson Keir Starmer said that the defeat in the House was a "badge of shame" for the government. He further told the British Press Association that the decision had "huge constitutional and political significance".

The contempt vote comes as senior legislators from six parties urged, via a joint letter, the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, to launch proceedings under contempt of Parliament against the government.

"The Government has failed to publish the Attorney General`s full and final legal advice on the Brexit deal, as was ordered by Parliament. We have been left with no option but to write to the Speaker of the House of Commons to ask him to launch proceedings of contempt," Starmer tweeted earlier.

Starmer had accused the government of "willfully refusing to comply" with the order of the Parliament during the debate on Tuesday. "This is contempt," he added.

The day started on a bad note for the British government as a top European Union (EU) law officer that the UK could unilaterally cancel the Brexit process.

The Advocate General told the European Court of Justice that the approval of the remaining 27 EU member nations is not necessary for the cancellation of the two-year countdown for Brexit.

This was followed by the House of Commons approving an amendment which gives the Parliament more influence over the process if the government`s deal was to be rejected by lawmakers next week.

In 2016, over 50 per cent of the UK electorate voted to leave the EU, following which the British government had triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, beginning the country`s process of its exit from the European bloc.

According to the draft deal, the UK is scheduled to leave the bloc on March 29, 2019, after which it will move into a 21-month long transitionary period (post-Brexit transition).&nbsp;
