France aims to wow the world on Friday with an extravagant Olympics opening ceremony through the heart of Paris, officially kicking off Games fraught with security risks at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

Some 45,000 police, 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 private security staff will ensure the safety of the parade along the river Seine, its banks and surrounding monuments, in an unprecedented display of security.

A procession of barges will take nearly 7,000 athletes along the river past Paris's most famous landmarks, while more than 300,000 spectators will watch from the banks.

Since the last Olympics in Beijing in 2022, wars have erupted in Ukraine and Gaza, providing a tense backdrop to the Games. France is at its highest level of security - though officials have repeatedly said there is no specific threat to the opening ceremony or the Games.

Scores of world leaders will be in Paris for the opening ceremony, which will be protected by snipers on rooftops. The Seine's riverbed has been swept for bombs, and Paris' airspace will be closed.

For the Games more generally, radar-surveillance planes and Reaper drones will watch sensitive sites from above, and Mirage 2000 fighter jets will be on standby to intercept aircraft straying into restricted airspace.

"Everything is ready," French President Emmanuel Macron said in a video he posted on X. "Even the (Olympics) rings are there," he said, overlooking the Eiffel tower. "Enjoy the Games!"

But his failed bet on a snap legislative election has weakened him and is casting a shadow over his moment on the international stage.

High security also means much grumbling from locals, after police imposed a security zone along the river ahead of the opening ceremony, erecting metal barriers to fence off neighbourhoods and requiring authorisation - passes with QR codes - to enter.

Cafes along the banks of the Seine, which normally buzz with activity in the summer, have been left very quiet due to the restrictions.

That has not helped lift the national mood over the Olympics, which Macron will hope improves once the Games have properly started.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine means Moscow's usually huge delegation of athletes has been reduced to 15 who met and accepted eligibility requirements to compete as neutrals, according to a list published by the IOC on July 20.

Belarus will send 17 athletes competing as neutrals.

Ukraine is sending 140 athletes - its smallest contingent since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

<h3>Floating Parade</h3>

Starting at 7:30 p.m. (1530 GMT), in broad daylight, the ceremony, which marks the official start of the Paris 2024 Games, will pass by many of the French capital's beloved landmarks, including the Louvre museum and Pont des Arts bridge.

"We're going to take advantage of all the historic monuments around the Seine, and there won't be a single riverbank or bridge that won't be filled with music, dance, or performance," the ceremony's choreographer Maud Le Pladec has said.

It will the first time that an opening ceremony has taken place outside of a stadium.

Details including some of the artists taking part, who will be the last to carry the torch and light the Olympic cauldron to mark the start of the Games, have been kept secret.

The artistic team said they had been rehearsing in private to keep it all under wraps.

One big unknown for the open-air ceremony is the weather. It is currently forecast to be cloudy, while organisers were hoping there would be a "golden hour" of sunset lighting up buildings midway through the ceremony.

More than 10,500 athletes will compete at the Olympics, 100 years since Paris last staged the Games. Competition started on Wednesday and the first of the 329 gold medals will be awarded on Saturday. The closing ceremony will take place on Aug. 11.

The soccer team, whose first group game is in four days' time against Germany in Marseille, will now need to have some of that equipment replaced locally before the luggage is eventually shipped to France.

"It is still currently in Spain and we are working with Football Australia to resolve this issue," Meares told a press conference.

"They are still able to train and prepare, and they have their training and playing kit with them. But there are some items of personal luggage, some medical items and other equipment that is still on the ground in Spain."

"My goal is to not to fight at the last minute to make the top 16, but to be in the top 10, top eight, or even top four. To not even have the doubt whether India will play in the team events at the Olympics or not."

The Italian coach added that he has been using data provided by artificial intelligence to improve his players, with the team partnering up with Indian sports analytics company Stupa Sports Analytics for a training camp.

"Technology and AI can help have a better understanding of performance. Sometimes the words of the coach are not enough," added Costantini, who returned to the Indian table tennis set up for a third stint this year.

"Besides the words we can have something objective. You can think you played well, but through these reports and data, you know you actually were just okay, or you think you played horrible and actually were very, very good.

"We're just making little adjustments, like they do in motorsport, where small details can reduce the time maybe by one millisecond. In table tennis, it is exactly the same."

Once she takes a dip in the women’s 200m freestyle event in Swimming at the Olympics 2024, Dhinidhi will become only the second youngest Indian athlete after Aarti Saha, who competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.&nbsp;

For over seven decades now, Aarti was the youngest Indian Olympian at the Summer Games at 11 years old.&nbsp;

While&nbsp;none of the Indian swimmers attained the A or the B qualification time for the Paris Summer Games, Desinghu was awarded the universality quota by the Olympic Games Tripartite Commission, with the seasoned campaigner Srihari Nataraj joining her.

Also, she may not have bagged a direct quota, but there's plenty in store&nbsp;for the teenager, given her age and distinctive technique.&nbsp;

“She has swum at the World Championships and Asian Games. I don’t think the Olympics are going to be any different.

“The Olympics is all about the build-up, the media hype. But once she is in the pool it is about nothing else but what she does the best – swimming,” he added.

Complimenting her for her work ethic, Ameen reflected on her performances and the accolades she won in the lead-up to the tournament. Besides winning gold at the 2023 National Aquatics Championships with a national record time of 2:04.24s, Desinghu dominated the 2023 National Games in Goa, where she won seven gold medals for Karnataka.

“This will be the biggest tournament of my life. Competition will be very tough as everyone will bring their A-game. I have to be at my very best, play well consistently in all matches. But I am really focused and prepared for the next 2-3 weeks in Paris,” he continued.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, should he and his compatriot HS Prannoy win their respective groups, they will face off in an all-Indian pre-quarters clash at the Paris Olympics. However, per the record, Lakshya leads the head-to-head tally 4-3.

“As of now, I am only thinking of winning the Group. There is a lot of work to be done before the knockouts. Overall, I am really prepared to go out there and give my best. The training has been good,” Sen added.

<h2>Sen explains training routine</h2>

Currently training in Marseille – a three-hour drive from Paris – for a 12-day stint, Sen is surrounded by his coach, Yoo Yong Sung, shuttler brother Chirag, his physical trainer and physio and others.

Explaining as to why he is based here, Sen said, “We decided to come here because it is close to Paris. The main reason was to come here early, get used to the time zone and get into the sleeping pattern. Also, shuttle speed matters a lot. In Bengaluru, shuttles are quite fast.

Spiralling travel and accommodation costs, French political tumult and security concerns are discouraging many sports fans and visitors from attending the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

Cities that win a coveted chance to host the world's biggest sporting event often do so on expectations that they will attract throngs of visitors to showcase themselves and boost their economy.

But Paris has a handful of factors going against it that have held down bookings.

Flight bookings to the French capital - an indicator of tourist activity - are expected to increase by 10% year-on-year from June 6 onwards, according to flight ticketing data firm ForwardKeys.

That is a stark contrast to the 115% increase in tourist arrivals for the 2016 Rio Games. Even the Tokyo Games, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a 20% increase, ForwardKeys said.

Data from Paris-based consultancy MKG shows hotel reservations have dropped since last year for the weeks ahead of the Olympics, along with a 25% revenue decline for much of June.

The data alongside interviews with travel agents, sports fans and ticket sellers show high prices and security concerns are making even the most ardent Olympic fans reluctant to attend.

"Right now, it's the lowest bookings we've seen in 25 years for almost any sports event," Alan Bachand, a sports travel agent based in the United States, told Reuters.

The findings underscore the challenges major cities face hosting international sporting events - they are already crowded and expensive, scaring off more price-conscious consumers.

They also show that unrelenting travel demand, with travellers willing to splash cash on experiences rather than goods in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is slowing as they become more sensitive to increased prices.

London experienced something similar in 2012. It only saw a 3% increase in arrivals, as many tourists steered clear of a city that would normally be inundated with tourists over the summer.

Still, it will be a blow for the French capital - one study recently estimated the Games would generate up to $12 billion in economic benefits to the Paris region. Last year, the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from staging the Commonwealth Games because of ballooning costs.

<h2>Night Bus</h2>

Emma Mathieson, 29, has tickets in August for the women's bronze football match in Lyon and is hoping to get tickets to the gold match the following day in Paris.

But rather than staying overnight afterwards, she will catch a night bus back to London. Accommodation of over 300 euros ($323) for the night was above her budget.

"I would have loved to have seen more women's matches or group stages if it was more affordable," she said.

Average hotel prices between July 26 and Aug. 11 have surged by 70% to 342 euros a night from last year, according to the Paris tourist office.

Even wealthier visitors have been put off. Bachand said four-star hotels were charging up to 1,000 euros a night during the competition, with many clients shying away as a result.

Even so, homesharing site Airbnb says it has seen record Paris bookings. As of March, nights booked in the Paris region during the games were 400% higher than the same time a year ago.

However, Air France-KLM said on Monday it expected weaker-than-expected summer sales as travellers avoid the Olympics.

Global Travel Moments, a luxury travel agency, said clients had also cited security worries in addition to pricing as a reason to postpone their trips.

France is on its highest level of security alert as the Games approach, with the country additionally undergoing snap legislative elections.

Islamist terrorism is the main security worry, the French capital's chief of police Laurent Nunez said last month.

"People are giving it a wide berth given the current climate," said Duncan Greenfield-Turk, Global Travel Moments' chief travel designer, citing "challenges" like the election called by President Emmanuel Macron.

One client recently postponed a trip to Paris until next year while another chose to visit before the games, he said.

Luxury retailers are hoping to boost sales in other areas outside of Paris as tourists avoid the French capital.

Biles capped her trials with another electrifying floor routine, her high-flying tumbling bringing the crowd to its feet.

She piled up 117.225 over two days of competition to earn an automatic berth on the five-strong team for Paris.

Three years after a bout of the disorienting "twisties" cut short Biles's Tokyo Games campaign, the gymnast considered the best of all time will return to the Olympic stage looking stronger than ever.

"I knew I wasn't done after the performances in Tokyo," Biles said. "I knew I'd be back."

The vault is so difficult that she still scored 15.00 points -- down from the 15.800 she earned on Friday.

Biles said she has no trouble taking that kind of mistake in stride.

"It's not my first time out there," she said. "I'm a little bit older, so I know exactly how to kind of reboot and re-collect myself to move on to the next event, even if I feel like something wasn't how I wanted it to go."

Among those who will be trying to punch their tickets to Paris later this month, Blakely displayed impressive consistency over two days and Suni Lee, the Tokyo Olympic all-around champion, was an impressive fourth place as she continues her return from career-threatening kidney disease.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the launch of Let’s Move, India, inviting everyone to embrace the joy of movement and to celebrate athletes participating at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. People all over the country can join the movement through a digital challenge on social media. Young people can also take part in a series of regional school initiatives in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation and Abhinav Bindra Foundation to coincide with Olympic Day on 23 June.&nbsp;

An ongoing initiative from the IOC, Let’s Move aims to inspire people all over the world to move more every day, anywhere, anyhow. It is part of the Olympic Movement’s mission to make the world a better place through sport and sets out to highlight the positive impact that sport and fitness have on physical and mental health. Launched on Olympic Day 2023 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), Let’s Move has witnessed participation from over 1,000 athletes, with more than 15 million people around the world taking part in physical activity.&nbsp;

Starting today, people of all ages, regions and abilities are encouraged to recreate their favourite athlete celebrations, or create their own, aiming to inspire and celebrate the Olympians heading to Paris 2024, who will be representing their 1.4 billion compatriots from 26 July. In the regional context, this is inclusive of, but not restricted to, catchy dance steps, hero tributes, or simply moves from India’s many local games and sports.

Bach said other advantages of AI included fairer judging, better safeguarding and improved spectator experience.

The Olympic AI Agenda comes from the IOC AI working group -– a high-level panel of global experts including AI pioneers and athletes, set up last year.

When asked about the potential negatives of AI, Bach was keen to emphasise the importance of free choice in sport.

"He and she, or the parents, must still have the free choice," said the German. "So a guy who is then maybe identified as a great athlete in wrestling must still have the chance to play tennis and cannot be sorted out from these sports."

Paris Games 2024: Spain women's team bags historic Olympic spot with win over Netherlands

For the first time, the Indian men’s and women’s table tennis teams have qualified for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, scheduled later this year. Despite losing their pre-quarterfinal clashes at the ITTF World Table Tennis Teams Championships in Busan on Wednesday, both teams qualified by taking the last world ranking spot.

At Busan, hosts Korea beat ten-time national champion Sharath Kamal-led men’s team 3-0. The women’s team, however, put up a stern competition but lost 1-3 to the higher-ranked Chinese Taipei, including world number 10 Cheng I-Ching and World Number 41 Szu-Yu Chen.

India qualified for the Table Tennis Team Event for the first time since its introduction at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. The official list of team rankings will come out on March 5, said Kamlesh Mehta, general secretary of Table Tennis Federation of India.

“The men’s and the women’s teams played very well, and we’re proud of them. We’re waiting for the official announcement that we have qualified for the Paris Olympics, which will come on the 5th of March,” Kamlesh Mehta said as quoted by the Indian Express.

Speaking on the same, top Indian Table Tennis player Gnanasekaran Sathiyan said though the official announcement around quota allotment is yet to be announced, everyone in the camp is happy with the achievement. He added India waited for this moment for a long time and thanked the coaches, support staff and SAI for a breakthrough.

“The entire team is very excited. We were looking forward to this day for a very long time. We’re extremely happy that we’ve made the cut for the Olympics though we have to wait for the quota to be confirmed officially," said&nbsp;Sathiyan

“It’s truly a fantastic team effort by everyone, the coaches, support staff, federation and SAI. I think it’s truly historic for something like this to happen, to qualify as a team in both men’s and women’s,” he added.

Considering that only two wins in this event guarantee a medal spot at the Summer Games, this 16-team event comes across as a sought-after event. Besides, it also guarantees two singles entries for the Paris Olympics.

Per the latest standings, Manika Batra and Sreeja should go through in the women’s category and there would be a tossup between World No.67 Harmeet Desai, veteran Sharath, Sathiyan and Manav Thakkar for the two spots.&nbsp; 
 
Besides, Sathiyan should also qualify for the mixed doubles event, partnering with Batra.

Three Paris Olympics sites face slight delays and are being monitored, but all the sporting infrastructure is expected to be delivered on time for the start of the Games in July, the event's top infrastructure official said Wednesday.

Construction of one section of the athletes' village is running several weeks behind schedule, as is the renovation of the Grand Palais monument in central Paris that will host the fencing, the head of the Paris Olympics infrastructure body, Solideo, said.

A third site -- the Colombes swimming pool set to be used for training in northern Paris -- is not expected to be finished until June and is under observation.

"There are three sites out of 70 that are being monitored, without the schedule being at risk," Nicolas Ferrand told a hearing of the French Senate's sports commission.

"Overall, the works are totally on time and they are within the budget given to us, and with the levels of ambition that were set," he added.

Contractors are also racing to finish a crucial metro line extension in north and south Paris ahead of the start of the sporting extravaganza, but organisers remain confident that everything will be concluded in time.

Michel Cadot, who heads a Games co-ordination committee and is head of the National Sports Agency, also reassured the Senate committee the Games would be "perfectly on time and within budget."

The opening ceremony on July 26, which is set to see the teams sail down the river Seine in central Paris, is still being finalised.

Cadot said that the number of spectators was still under discussion with a reduction of 10-15 percent being envisaged, he said.

Organisers had initially announced plans for 600,000 people to attend in person -- most of them for free -- but the latest estimate is for 500,000, according to police and political sources.

The idea for the open-air ceremony -- the first time the parade will take place outside the athletics stadium in Olympics history -- has been dogged by criticism since its inception because of security concerns.

Cadot said that the ceremony could not be shifted to the athletics stadium as a "plan B" because it would be in use for rugby at the time.

Contingency plans entailed an "adaptation of the concept on the Seine", he said, which media reports have speculated could entail athletes being withdrawn if the risk of a terror attack was considered to be too high.

He also expressed confidence the Seine could be used for the open-water swimming and triathlon events as efforts continue to clean up the waterway.

Work is "advancing very well with remarkable results that are already visible," he told the senators.

Poor water quality forced the cancellation of three swimming test events last July and August.
