Authorities in Wuhan have announced a comprehensive ban on eating wild animals and the hunting and trading of wildlife, according to a statement by the city's municipal government.

"There will be a ban on the sale and eating of terrestrial wild animals that are both in the wild as well as bred and reared,"

According to the Human Society International (HSI), the wildlife consumption trade in China is “worth 125 billion yuan, roughly $18 billion.” But wildlife consumption is not the biggest industry in the country.

“The largest proportion of China’s wildlife farming is the fur industry, worth 389 billion yuan ($55 billion) annually," the society said.

It remains unclear how the industry will be affected by new legislation, with parliament promising at least a stronger approval and supervision regime.

"It will be important for TCM experts, wildlife conservation experts, and relevant authorities to take a look at TCM-related laws and regulations to make sure they are consistent," said Aili Kang, executive director of the Asia Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

"To strictly forbid the use of endangered species, no matter wild or captive breeding population... is good for both TCM and conservation," she added.

The head of the World Bank warned Tuesday that the coronavirus crisis threatens to push some 60 million people into extreme poverty, wiping out the gains made over the past three years.

The global lending institution is already financing aid programs in 100 countries, under its commitment to spend $160 billion over the next 15 months, bank president David Malpass said.

"That's home to 70 per cent of the world's population. This represents a significant milestone," Malpass told a conference call.

Malpass said the bank anticipates a five per cent contraction in the world economy this year, with severe effects on the poorest countries.

"Our estimate is that up to 60 million people will be pushed into extreme poverty, erasing all the progress made in poverty alleviation in the past three years, and our forecasts indicate a deep recession," Malpass said.

Nearly five million people have been infected by the virus around the world, and more than 300,000 have died since it first appeared in China in late 2019.

So far, the World Bank has spent $5.5 billion to shore up beleaguered health systems, economies and social services in poor countries.

But Malpass stressed that the World Bank's efforts alone were insufficient, and urged donor nations to step up bilateral aid to poorer countries to ensure a durable recovery.

He said restoring the flow of remittance payments and tourism -- key sources of income for developing countries -- would be "critical steps in the reopening."

A year-long moratorium on debt payments by less developed countries -- called for by the G-20 in mid-April -- has gained growing acceptance, he noted.

According to Malpass, 14 countries have agreed to such a suspension of debt payments, another 23 are expected to request it, and 17 were giving it serious consideration.

"That's a very welcome and very fast response and positive response to the G-20 countries' commitment," he said.

International travellers planning a trip to Norway without a business reason should think again following drastic action announced by the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg today.

Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg has said that travellers arriving in Norway without a business reason to come will be sent back.

“We’re discouraging people to leave Norway… If you don’t have a work reason to come to Norway, you will be sent back when you arrive in Norway these days,” she said.

"Norway is so in control of the infections that future localized outbreaks will be handled with intensive testing and specialized lockdowns," Solberg said.

“We have never been after the Second World War in a situation like this in Norway,” Solberg added.

Norway may decide to loosen restrictions imposed on leisure travel from other Nordic states - which include Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Finland - by June 15, and will consider admitting travellers from selected other European countries by July 20.

Sweden, which shares a 1,630-km (1,000-mile) border with Norway, has adopted a mix of legislation and recommendations in response to the coronavirus pandemic, rather than declaring a full lockdown as seen in most of the rest of Europe.

Sweden has registered more than 3,500 coronavirus-linked deaths - a toll far lower than many large EU countries but around five times higher than Denmark and more than 10 times that of its other Nordic neighbours.

When remaining glued to the news and social media feeds on Covid-19 can be emotionally draining even for commoners, how about the condition of our frontline warriors who are physically and mentally leading the fight against Coronavirus? Over 100 leading Doctors from various hospitals in Chennai have made a dance video of theirs to relieve the mental stress of serving during the times of Coronavirus. Besides rendering their selfless service to the patients, they also wish to spread positivity amongst the medical fraternity and their families to overcome these unprecedented, testing times.

“We initially held an assumption that India would be spared, but as it started spreading, our worries started multiplying. We were tensed about the possibility of getting infected, thereby infecting others and our families. There’s also the uncertainty that comes with job loss and pay cuts. And our fraternity too needed a way to deal with this. Two make matters worse, there were cases of attacks against medical professionals” Dr Sai Surender, Clinical Lead, Emergency Medicine Rela Institute and Medical Centre told WION.

The idea of the video was born when three doctors got together on a WhatsApp group and decided to add more of their colleagues and friends from the fraternity. But they had one strict rule on the group- No posts on Covid-19 at all costs. In no time, the group had grown to over 100 members. They were all working for top private and government hospitals in Chennai and Vellore. It was agreed upon to film a quick dance video from wherever they were and share it on the group, to make a compilation.

“We wanted to come up with something that would help relieve the stress. Music was a common healer and stress buster and that’s how it began. People have got this perception that we doctors are serious persons and that we can’t express ourselves, but in the end, we are human beings too and we need a vent for our emotions. We decided that we’d pick only positive songs and that each doctor or his/her team should provide a 30sec-1min clip” Dr Deepashree, Clinical lead, Interventional Radiology told WION.

The mash-up video that has now garnered about 30K views on Youtube features senior-doctors, hospital owners among others showcasing their dance moves to popular tracks of Michael Jackson, Bobby Mcferrin, A.R Rahman and Anirudh Ravichander. While some of them filmed the videos while at their hospitals, few had also filmed them from their residences and temporary hotel rooms.

“Everyone one of us is tired of speaking about Corona and many are missing their families. It’s sweet that all agreed to come together for a dance video for the sake of motivating each other and keeping us happy. Some of us way of thanking the housekeeping and paramedical staff who are tirelessly supporting us, as always” Dr Meena, Senior Consultant, Emergency Medicine told WION.

But beyond the dance video on their Youtube channel, the groups of doctors now want to step up their efforts and conduct interactive sessions with the general public. They wish to reach out on topics such as general health tips and also on specific issues such as cancer, diabetes, cardiology etc. in line with their expertise and specialization.

Queen Elizabeth II hit by £18 million hole in finances after palaces shut to tourists

Japan’s economy slipped into recession for the first time in 4-1/2 years, GDP data showed on Monday, putting the nation on course for its deepest postwar slump as the coronavirus crisis takes a heavy toll on businesses and consumers.

The world’s third-largest economy shrank for the second consecutive quarter in the three months to March, intensifying the challenge for policymakers battling a once-in-a-century pandemic that has already caused widespread disruptions.

Gross domestic product (GDP) contracted an annualised 3.4% in the first quarter as private consumption, capital expenditure and exports fell, preliminary official data showed, following a revised 7.3 decline in the October-December period, meeting the technical definition of a recession.

The median market forecast was for a 4.6% contraction in the first quarter.

The last time Japan suffered a recession was in the second half of 2015.

“It’s a near certainty the economy suffered an even deeper decline in the current quarter,” said Yuichi Kodama, chief economist at Meiji Yasuda Research Institute. “Japan has entered a full-blown recession.”

The coronavirus, which first emerged in China late last year, has ravaged the global economy as many nations went into strict lockdowns to curb the outbreak that has so far killed over 310,000 people worldwide. The pandemic has been massively disruptive on supply chains and businesses, particularly in trade-reliant nations such as Japan.

Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan’s $5 trillion economy, slipped 0.7%, versus a 1.6% drop expected by economists.

That marked the second straight quarter of decline, as households were hit by the double-whammy of the coronavirus and a sales tax hike to 10% from 8% in October last year.

The virus’ impact on corporate Japan has been telling, with the GDP data showing exports contracted sharply by 6% in the first quarter.

The shakeout in global trade was highlighted in the recent March data, with Japan’s exports slumping the most in nearly four years due to plunging U.S.-bound shipments including cars.

Capital expenditure fell 0.5% in the fourth quarter, against a median forecast for a 1.5% drop and marked the second consecutive quarter of declines, the data showed.

Taken together, domestic demand knocked 0.7 percentage point off GDP growth, while external demand shed 0.2 points.

All of this has put a strain on the labour market. The jobless rate in March rose to its highest in a year, while job availability slipped to a more than three-year low.

Japan slips into recession, slump set to worsen as pandemic wreaks havoc

Japan's economy slipped into recession for the first time in 4-1/2 years in the last quarter, putting the nation on course for its deepest postwar slump as the coronavirus crisis ravages businesses and consumers.

Monday's first-quarter GDP data underlined the broadening impact of the outbreak, with exports plunging the most since the devastating March 2011 earthquake as global lockdowns and supply chain disruptions hit shipments of Japanese goods.

Analysts warn of an even bleaker picture for the current quarter as consumption crumbled after the government in April requested citizens to stay home and businesses to close, intensifying the challenge for policymakers battling a once-in-a-century pandemic.

"It's near certainty the economy suffered an even deeper decline in the current quarter," said Yuichi Kodama, chief economist at Meiji Yasuda Research Institute. "Japan has entered a full-blown recession."

The world's third-largest economy contracted an annualised 3.4% in the first quarter, preliminary official gross domestic product (GDP) data showed, less than a median market forecast for a 4.6% drop.

The slump came on top of an even steeper 7.3% fall in the October-December period, with the consecutive quarters of contraction meeting the technical definition of a recession. Japan last suffered recession in the second half of 2015.

Indeed, the fallout of the virus on corporate Japan was telling with exports diving 6.0% in the first quarter, the biggest decline since April-June 2011.

"Exports to China began to fall in February, followed by a wave of slumping shipments to Europe and the United States," said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute.

"Exports were also hurt by slumping inbound tourism," which counts as a drop in non-residents' purchases of Japanese services, he said.

Deeper slump, slower recovery

The shakeout in global trade was underlined in recent March data, with exports shrinking the most in nearly four years due to plunging US-bound shipments.

Even the nation's major globe-trotting manufacturers weren't spared the pandemic's sweeping impact.

Toyota Motor Corp has said it will cut domestic vehicle production by 122,000 units in June and expects an 80% drop in full-year operating profit.

The gloom in Japan is expected to deepen over coming months.

Analysts polled by Reuters estimate Japan's economy will shrink an annualised 22.0% in the current quarter, which would be a record decline, with pressure on output intensifying after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in April declared a nationwide state of emergency amid the widening pandemic.

The emergency was lifted for most regions on Thursday, but remained in effect for some big cities including Tokyo. Japan has so far reported 16,337 coronavirus cases and 756 deaths.

Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's $5 trillion economy, slipped 0.7% in January-March, less than a market forecast for a 1.6% drop, as robust demand for daily necessities partially offset the impact on services spending.

All the same, it marked the second straight quarter of decline, as households endured the double-whammy of the coronavirus and a sales tax hike to 10% from 8% in October last year.

Capital expenditure fell 0.5% in the first quarter after plummeting 4.8% in October-December last year, the GDP data showed, suggesting that uncertainty over the outlook is discouraging companies from boosting spending.

All of this has put a strain on the labour market. The jobless rate in March rose to its highest in a year, while job availability slipped to a more than three-year low.

The government has already announced a record $1.1 trillion stimulus package, and the Bank of Japan expanded stimulus for the second straight month in April. Abe has pledged a second supplementary budget later this month to fund fresh spending measures to cushion the economic blow from the outbreak.

Still, many analysts warn that government support will come too little, too late.

"As always in Japan, the implementation is very slow. It will take the later half of the second quarter (and) the third quarter" for government stimulus to kick in, said Martin Schulz, chief economist at Fujitsu.

"The recovery will be slower than many are hoping for ... To recover from this crisis, it will take about two years at least."

The epicentre of the pandemic has shifted twice, first from China to Europe, and then from Europe to the United States.

Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University have reported in its map that the United States has taken the grim title of the country with the most coronavirus infections and reported a record surge in unemployment.

The US is the worst-hit country with nearly 90,000 deaths and over 1.4 million confirmed COVID-19 cases.US economy, the world's largest, has been thrown into a recession due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Some scientific models suggest the figure will rise to 3,000 a day by June.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries to investigate any early suspicious cases of the coronavirus before December 2019 when the first human cases were officially identified in China's Wuhan.

The disease later identified as COVID-19 was first reported by Chinese authorities to the WHO on December 31 and was not previously believed to have spread to Europe until January.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday took a coronavirus test during his televised briefing and urged any fellow New Yorkers with symptoms or having been exposed to the virus to follow his example.

"You don't have to be New York tough to take that test," he said during the live broadcast of his popular daily briefing.

Cuomo's sometimes folksy and often informative briefings have been followed by thousands of viewers since New York emerged as a COVID-19 hotspot in the US, with more than 350,000 cases and more than 22,000 confirmed deaths.

"You have to be smart, united, disciplined; you have to love yourself, your family, New Yorkers," he said, after a nurse in the protective gown, mask and face shield had Cuomo close his eyes while she inserted a nasal swab to take a sample.

"If I am not here tomorrow, that means I tested positive," the governor quipped. He has been tested several times previously, he said, but never before the public.

Cuomo said the criteria for being tested had been expanded to include not just those with flu-like symptoms, but also people returning to work, medical and nursing-home personnel, and anyone who interacts with the public at work or who has been exposed to a sick person.

"We just don't have enough New Yorkers coming to be tested," which is vitally important as parts of the state reopen some non-essential activities, the governor said.

Later, Cuomo turned to Twitter to underline his message, saying: "It's quick, easy and painless. If I have time, you do too."

Coronavirus brought Belgium its deadliest April since world War 2 last month, according to a new study as the country begins slowly to lift lockdown measures.

A total of 14,790 people died in Belgium last month as COVID-19 swept the nation -- substantially higher than the normal April total of deaths below 9,000, researchers from VUB university in Brussels found.

Not since the Nazi occupation of the 1940s has Belgium seen such a high mortality rate in April, the month when high winter death rates usually drop off with the onset of spring, the researchers found.

"Mortality in Belgium is exceptionally high, reaching unprecedented levels, especially in the period from 1 to 12 April," the university said in a statement.

April 10 saw 639 deaths, "more than double the number that would have been expected for that day".

"April 2020 was the deadliest April since the Second World War, both in absolute numbers and per capita," it said.

There were 15.7 deaths per 1,000 population last month, Professor Patrick Deboosere of the Interface Demography research group that produced the study told AFP.

This compares with 16.3 deaths per 1,000 population in April 1941.
Belgium has been hit hard by the pandemic, suffering one of the world's highest per capita death tolls, though the virus appears to be easing and lockdown restrictions are starting to be lifted.

The government has also been praised by the World Health Organization for keeping more accurate tolls than some of its neighbours, and the per capita rate may be higher because of this.
