Think Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan in Saajan but only with a Pakistani setting, some poetic Urdu dialogues, good looking people and lots of unadulterated romance. I am describing Zindagi channel’s latest offering Abdullapur Ka Devdas for you. The series which premiered on Zindagi channel on February 26 continues to be a fan favourite ever since it aired.

Pegged as "not another love story", the show focuses on a young woman Gulbano and how two friends Fakhar and Kashif fall for the same woman unknowingly while she is obsessed with an unseen poet who goes by the name of Abdullapur Ka Devdas. Things take a turn when one friend poses as the anonymous poet while the other who is the original keeps his name hidden for the sake of friendship.

As the show grows in popularity, we got in touch with the lead actress of the show, Sarah Khan who plays Gulbano, the woman desired by both friends, played by actors Bilal Abbas Khan and Raza Talish.

Here are the edited excerpts of the chat:

WION: Gulbano is loved and adored by all. What is it that you liked a lot about the role?

Sarah Khan: Playing Gulbano's rich and well-articulated persona was a challenge. The intricacies of her character, from being the epitome of grace and angelic beauty to navigating the profound grief of losing her parents, offered a broad spectrum of emotions to explore as an actor. The duality of her life – as the sole heiress of her father's fortune and the victim of ill-treatment by her uncle – provides a complex and compelling narrative that I found intriguing.

WION: The show has tasted immense success. What according to you was the high point of the show?

Sarah Khan: The zenith of Abdullahpur Ka Devdas for me was the profound exploration of sacrifice and selfless love. As Gulbano's journey unfolds, the revelation of true identities and the intricate dynamics between Fakhar, Kashif, and herself lead to a climactic moment of emotional intensity.

The scenes capture the essence of the human spirit, laying bare the complexities of relationships and the sacrifices made for the sake of love. The narrative crescendos with Gulbano's pursuit of her idealised "Devdas," intertwining the characters' fates in a compelling and unpredictable manner.

WION: Do you consume Indian content especially Bollywood?

Sarah Khan: Absolutely! I appreciate and enjoy a diverse range of content, including Bollywood films. The Indian film industry, particularly Bollywood, has produced some timeless classics and contemporary masterpieces. The storytelling, vibrant cinematography, and the rich cultural elements portrayed in Bollywood films have always captured my interest. Whether it's the soulful music, compelling narratives, or the remarkable performances by talented actors, Indian cinema has a unique charm that resonates globally.

I find inspiration in the variety of genres and themes explored in Bollywood, and it's always fascinating to witness the creativity and innovation within the industry.
WION: How do you feel about borders between India and Pakistan finally opening up?

Sarah Khan: It’s a positive and hopeful development. It signifies a potential for increased cultural exchange, people-to-people connections, and a shared understanding between the two nations. The prospect of fostering stronger ties, not just politically but also culturally and socially, is something that resonates with many people on both sides of the border.

As an individual passionate about storytelling through the medium of dramas, I see this as an opportunity for collaboration and the exchange of creative ideas between artists from both countries. It's heartening to envision a future where the barriers that have separated us for so long can be replaced with bridges of mutual respect and cooperation.

Sarah on acting in Bollywood

Pakistani entertainment industry is now exploring different themes

WION: There’s a stark contrast in the kind of films/shows we do here in India vs those in Pakistan. Our topics, themes, style of narration are entirely different. What are some things the Pakistani entertainment industry is experimenting with these days?

Sarah Khan: We have been dynamically experimenting with a range of topics and styles of narration. One noticeable trend is the exploration of socially relevant and thought-provoking themes. Dramas are delving into issues such as mental health, women's empowerment, and societal norms, providing a platform for meaningful discussions.

The emergence of web series and digital platforms has also allowed for more experimental storytelling. This shift provides creators with the flexibility to explore edgier narratives, reaching a more global audience. It's heartening to witness the Pakistani entertainment industry embracing change, pushing boundaries, and offering viewers a diverse range of stories that reflect the evolving dynamics of our society.

Amongst one of the most heart-touching stories of romance coming from Pakistan in the recent, connecting borders and mending relationships is a sweet drama series titled Kabli Pulao. With the series being broadcast in India on Zindagi since November 11, we got in touch with the show’s lead cast Sabeena Farooq who plays an Afghan refugee girl Barbeena, who falls in love with a middle-aged Lahori Punjabi man. Raised in different cultures, the two meet up at an interesting juncture of their lives.

Talking about her experience on the set of Kabli Pulao, Sabeena detailed how it was one of the most memorable sets to be on. Read the excerpts of our conversation here:

WION: How was it like working on Kabli Pulao and what can the audiences expect from the show?

Sabeena Farooq: It stands as one of my most memorable experiences, and I genuinely wish to relive it. Despite the challenging character, it was an incredible journey. We had a great time shooting, and the beautifully written script added to the overall amazing experience.

Audiences can anticipate a non-judgmental perspective on the unfolding plot twists. In Pakistan, where the show aired, audiences tended to scrutinise every twist, but Kabli Pulao is remarkably unpredictable. Expect the unexpected. The show also weaves in subtle hints of family culture and drama.

WION: Will Indians get a feel of contemporary Pakistani city life via Kabli Pulao?

Sabeena Farooq: Yes, to some extent, as many societal issues and taboos are similar in both countries. However, the show predominantly focuses on the dynamics of the characters rather than showcasing contemporary Pakistani city life.

WION: How do you feel about your show debuting in India?

Sabeena Farooq: It feels historic since this is the first time a show is simultaneously airing in both countries. The prospect of making history is genuinely thrilling for me, and I would cherish this experience throughout my life.

WION: Do you watch Bollywood and other Indian language films and shows? If yes, is there something you have liked in the recent past?

Sabeena Farooq: Indeed, I enjoy watching a lot of Bollywood content. I'm a big fan of Rakhi Sawant as she never fails to brighten my mood on social media. Apart from dramas, I regularly watch Bollywood shows and movies, with a recent binge-watch of Four More Shots and the last movie being Pathaan.

WION: Now that ban on Pakistani artists has been removed after the recent Supreme Court judgement, can we expect Pakistani artists to return to the Hindi entertainment industry?

Sabeena Farooq: I would love the opportunity to work in India, and I equally welcome Indian artists to come to Pakistan and contribute to our dramas. Working with Shah Rukh Khan is a dream of mine, and I hope to see it come true soon.

Pak actress Sabeena to WION on love for Rakhi Sawant, SRK and latest show Kabli Pulao

As cross border teleplay ‘Gidh’ reaches India and opens to a heartwarming response in the country, Pakistani actress Sana Jafri spoke to WION about being part of a theatre play that was reconceptualised for broadcast, her love for Bollywood and favourite Hindi films from the recent lot.

WION: How was the experience of filming for 'Gidh'?

Sana Jafri: Filming ‘Gidh' was a great experience for me because it wasn’t a theatre play or a soap opera. It was a hybrid format between theatre and TV. What made it so special was that we could blend the best of both worlds. With theatre, you go through a process of extensive rehearsals and developing the back story of a character. We followed the same rule here. I really worked hard to delve into the details of the character and we just constantly practiced to get the details right and when it was time to film it, we didn’t have any certain set of rules to follow because it's a new kind of medium that is still evolving. We had a lot of room for experimentation. As an actor, it was the best experience of my life so far.

WION: Would you be interested in acting in the Indian film industry?

Sana Jafri: Not only would I be interested but I will be over the moon to act in Indian films, television, or theatre industry or even collaborate with people across the border in whatever capacity that I can. It would be really a dream come true. I would love to work in India.

WION: It's often heard that some cities in India and Pakistan share similarities in their vibe and culture. Do you feel so?

Sana Jafri: India, and Pakistan share similarities in their vibe and culture. I am a Punjabi girl and I was born in Lahore. I read a lot of Punjabi literature which is why I feel so close to the heritage of the subcontinent because I feel we share the same culture, folk tales, vocabulary, and ideas. Reading Waris Shah, Bulleh Shah, and all of these Sufi writers who wrote their works when our countries were not yet divided, has made me feel that I am part of this subcontinent and that all its people are my people.

WION: Do you truly believe that art has no boundaries and how relevant is this in today's world?

Sana Jafri: Art of course does not have any boundaries because mother earth doesn't have any. The rivers and oceans don’t have any boundaries either and all these barriers are man-made and imposed on us. Art is the one thing that transcends all this. Our countries may be divided by boundaries but we have grown up watching each other's stories and artistic content. This is what brings us so close. The relationship that our countries share is unique because our art, music, cinema, books, storytelling traditions, folk tales, and so many other things connect us and have been connecting us since the beginning of time.

WION: Any Indian film you've seen in recent time or anything you have really liked watching recently?

Sana Jafri: There are many of them, but to name a few: 'Pink,' 'Udta Punjab,’ ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ ‘Haider,' and 'Masaan.'

WION: You were recently attached to the project 'Churails' that is now streaming in India too on Zee5. How do you feel about that? Anything you'd like to say on the cross-cultural exchange between India and Pakistan that has been active for many years but has come to a stop for the past few years?

Sana Jafri: Yes, I was the assistant and casting director for 'Churails', and working for that was a great experience and I cannot compare it to anything else that I have ever done. It was a huge project and we didn’t have a lot of time but it all came together so well because every single person who was a part of the crew, believed in the stories that we were telling, the scenes we were ideating, and the honesty with which we were filming... To our surprise, it did so well not just in India and Pakistan but all over the world. Women, girls, and a lot of men who have seen the show used to message us and tell us that it was an inspirational show for them. This is something we take a lot of pride in. These are the narratives and the stories that we need to share with the world.
