The United States has officially designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), along with its militant wing, the Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The decision was announced by the US State Department on Monday (Aug 11). The decision coincided with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir's visit to the US. Notably, this was Munir's second visit to the US in two months. Experts have also said that America's move might also be to “get back” at India, and also in a way a support to Pakistan's long-standing accusation that New Delhi funds Baloch insurgency. This designation comes in addition to the BLA's status as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organisation, which it has held since 2019. While the SDGT status primarily restricted financial support, the new FTO designation makes it a criminal offence for anyone in the United States to offer any kind of support—logistical, material, or financial—to the group. According to the US State Department, the designations have been made under Section 219 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224. They will take effect once published in the Federal Register. But what is BLA and the Majeed Brigade, and why is Pakistan rattled by it?
What is the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA)?
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) is a Pakistan-based armed separatist group that seeks full independence for the Baloch people. It emerged in the early 2000s, fueled by long-standing grievances over political marginalisation, economic exploitation, and military repression by the Pakistani state. The BLA is known for orchestrating violent attacks targeting Pakistani security forces, government infrastructure, and projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The group is opposed to Chinese investment in the region, seeing it as exploitative and a threat to Baloch sovereignty. The Majeed Brigade is an elite unit within the BLA, known for carrying out suicide missions and highly coordinated urban assaults. It has been involved in several attacks claimed by the BLA and is now included in the US designation as part of the terrorist group. While designating the BLA as a terror organisation, the US State Department noted that it was responsible for suicide attacks near Karachi airport and the Gwadar Port Authority Complex in 2024. It further added that in March 2025, the group hijacked the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express from Quetta, killing 31 civilians and security personnel and taking over 300 passengers as hostages. Pakistan has accused BLA of terrorist activities, and the US designation is seen as support from America that strengthens their claim.

Why is the BLA considered a terrorist group?
Balochistan has witnessed at least five separatist uprisings since Pakistan’s independence in 1947. The most recent wave began in the early 2000s, expanding its goals from merely securing a share of local resources to seeking full independence from Pakistan.Supporters of the movement argue that the Pakistani government exploits Balochistan’s wealth, leaving the local population impoverished and politically marginalised. While the BLA frames its struggle as a freedom movement for Balochistan's independence, both Pakistan and multiple Western nations consider it a terrorist organisation due to its use of violence, including suicide bombings and civilian casualties. The group’s increasing attacks against infrastructure projects and civilian transport systems have escalated its profile globally. The US now views the BLA as a direct threat to regional stability, particularly in the context of strategic trade routes.
Where is Balochistan?
Balochistan is the largest but least populous and poorest province in Pakistan, covering nearly 44% of the country’s land area. It lies in the southwestern part of Pakistan and shares borders with Iran to the west, Afghanistan to the northwest, Sindh province to the southeast and the Arabian Sea to the south. The province is rich in natural resources such as gas, coal, and minerals, but has remained underdeveloped, fueling deep resentment among its estimated 15 million residents. Despite being rich in natural resources like gas, minerals, and coastal assets, Balochistan remains among Pakistan’s poorest and most underdeveloped regions. The BLA opposes the extraction of these resources without local benefit and condemns the Pakistani government's denial of Baloch rights. Quetta, the capital and largest city of Balochistan, is strategically located near the Afghan and Iranian borders. With a population of over 1.5 million as of 2024, it is the tenth largest city in Pakistan and a key political and military hub in the region. Moreover, Balochistan is strategically important, not only to Pakistan but also to other countries as it hosts Gwadar Port, a cornerstone of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It serves as a strategic route linking southwestern China to the Arabian Sea. It is central to regional trade and security dynamics involving Pakistan, China, Iran, and Afghanistan.

The United States blocked a planned visit by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to Pakistan by refusing to approve a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) travel ban exemption, according to a report by Dawn.According to Dawn, Muttaqi was scheduled to visit Pakistan on August 4 as part of a recent push to improve relations between Kabul and Islamabad. The engagement followed Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar's earlier visit to Kabul, which had been facilitated by China.Citing diplomatic sources, Dawn said that as the Afghan foreign minister is under international sanctions, he is barred from foreign travel without a special waiver from the UN sanctions committee. At a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan told reporters there were "certain procedural issues" being worked out and maintained that no official dates had been confirmed for Muttaqi's visit. India's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, revealed details about Operation Sindoor, describing it as a 'game of chess'. While speaking at IIT Madras, he mentioned that during Operation Sindoor, they played chess. The Army chief stressed that they did not know what Pakistan's next move was going to be, and hence what they would do."In Operation Sindoor, we played chess... This is called greyzone," he said, at the inauguration of Agnishodh, the Indian Army's Research Cell at IIT Madras. The Army chief further explained what a Greyzone is. “It means that we are not going for the conventional operations. He then said that the planning for the Operation Sindoor began on April 23, the day after the Pahalgam terror attack, which shook the nation. The Army chief recalled that it was the first time Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, "Enough is enough" and gave the "free hand" to the Army."All three chiefs were very clear that something had to be done. In a big update, the Pakistan Army has denied the rumours that Army chief Asim Munir will be the next president of the country. The Pakistan Army in a statement called the rumours as “baseless.” The army's response came following a wave of disinformation on social media during the previous weeks that Munir plans to replace President Asif Ali Zardari. Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, in an interview, made it clear that the army chief has no interest in the presidency. Earlier in May, Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal making him the second military official to hold the rank in the country's history. This promotion came after heightened tensions with India post Operation Sindoor. Speaking to The Economist, Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said that Munir has no interest in the presidency and no such proposal is under consideration, the state-run PTV posted on social media on Wednesday. "Talks about Field Marshal Asim Munir becoming the president of Pakistan are completely baseless," he said. Earlier on July 10, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi rejected rumours regarding the possible ouster of President Zardari and termed it a “malicious campaign.” He said that President Zardari “enjoys a strong and respectful relationship with the leadership of the armed forces.” Naqvi stressed that Munir's "sole focus" was Pakistan's strength and stability, and "nothing else." Meanwhile, Munir is expected in the US this week for consultations with his American counterparts, as per a Dawn report. This comes days after General Michael Erik Kurilla, head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), visited Pakistan in late July. During the visit, Gen Kurilla was also conferred the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) by the Pakistani government. Munir had also visited Washington in June, when he was hosted by United States President Donald Trump for lunch at the White House. It was soon after this meeting that Pakistan nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize.

Pakistan Army denied rumours that its Chief Asim Munir will be made the president of the country. The Army says Munir is focused solely on national stability. Recently promoted to Field Marshal, Munir is set to visit the US for talks.

“730 days in a tiny death cell. Over 200 politically motivated cases. His wife, Bushra Imran Khan, is also being held under inhumane conditions. Children and families of party officials are being targeted. Addressing the protesters at Times Square, @QasimKhanSuri spoke about the actions taken against Imran Khan, his wife, and his political supporters,” PTI USA posted on X. “This is all being done by a few government servants, who have unleashed a level of barbarism our country has never witnessed,” Suri said. “We stand here at the crossroads of the world in Times Square to condemn state terrorism. We condemn fascism. The message from all overseas Pakistanis is that we stand with Imran Khan!” Chief Coordinator PTI NY Amjad Nawaz said in his speech. Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser on Sunday (Aug 3) announced that all preparations for the nationwide protest on August 5 have been completed. Imran Khan, who was ousted from the office of the Prime Minister in April 2022, is facing multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, for his involvement in the May 9, 2023, riots. He is currently imprisoned. The PTI has called for nationwide protests, calling for his release, and his political supporters. Speaking at a press conference in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI leader Shahram Khan Tarakai, Qaiser, said that the protest will be peaceful and in accordance with the law. “This movement is about justice, not confrontation. We want a fair trial of our leader’s [Imran Khan] cases based on merit,” he said, as quoted by Geo News. He also noted that August 5 is a significant date, marking the day Khan was arrested. The protests come amid growing security concerns in Pakistan. The country has seen a rise in terror activities, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021.

Pakistan has launched what it called South Asia's first ‘subway on wheels’. Unveiled in Lahore, this rubber-wheeled, solar-powered tram resembles a bus but touts to deliver the efficiency of a metro, that too without a track. It is Pakistan's effort to modernise its urban transport and plans to deploy it in 30 cities. The announcement is indeed a fascinating feat, but experts and transport analysts are divided on whether the transport qualifies as a metro. But what is certain is that China's influence is truly reshaping Pakistan's infrastructure.
What is 'Subway on the Wheels'?
The vehicle, which runs on regular roads guided by virtual tracks using sensors and GPS technology, mimics the form and function of a metro system. It is electric and solar-powered and contributes to Pakistan's renewable energy goals. The system also allows multiple carriages to be connected and resemble a train, and can carry up to 500 passengers. But is it really a metro? Despite the branding, unlike a true metro, it shares roads with other vehicles, raising concerns over traffic and speed reliability. The vehicle's rubber tire makes it closer to a solar-powered bus than a train. It lacks dedicated infrastructure like underground tunnels, stations, or overpasses like those of a conventional metro system. But its cost-effective nature makes it compatible for an economically troubled nation such as Pakistan; moreover, being environmentally friendly public transport, it will potentially reduce the carbon footprint of the nation. For China, this is another strategic infrastructure export and marks a boost in its soft power in South Asia. For the region, it sparks a broader debate about low-cost, scalable transport innovation in mass mobility. So, despite not being a metro in true essence, it serves the purpose and marks a shift toward pragmatic, futuristic, and politically strategic infrastructure with China's tech and funding.

Pakistan have reportedly once again failed with the test of MIRV-capable Ababeel Missile. According to a report by Indian Defence News and Indian Defence Research Wing, the projectile crashed near Dera Bugti in Balochistan. However, no official verification has been provided from Pakistan. According to the report, Pakistan test-launched a version of the Ababeel medium‑range ballistic missile, designed to be MIRV-capable. The test, however, failed with a malfunction during flight, most likely in the propulsion system or structural integrity. The debris of the missile crash was reportedly seen at the Dera Bugti area in Balochistan.

The debris circulating on Pakistani social media appears to be the second stage of Pakistan’s Ababeel missile. If I can get access to a video of the debris, I’ll be able to conduct a more detailed analysis. These are only initial observations. pic.twitter.com/rfr9krZSOk— Alpha Defense™🇮🇳 (@alpha_defense) July 22, 2025

The event is not new as Pakistan has previously publicly tested Ababeel missile in January 2017, claiming MIRV capability. However, analysts later concluded that the MIRV capability could not be independently verified. It was assumed that the missile likely shared components with other solid-fuel systems and did not conclusively demonstrate multiple re-entry vehicles. Subsequent tests such as those of October 2023, which were officially called successful, but according to open-source investigations (OSINT) and eyewitness accounts, ended in failure.
What is MIRV? Why is it difficult for a nuclear-powered nation to get it right?
Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle or MIRV is a ballistic missile with multiple nuclear warheads that can be aimed and deployed at multiple targets. A simpler analogy would be a nuclear shotgun in space. Each MIRV has to carry multiple nukes, which means the country needs to design and test small-yield, compact nuclear warheads, a major technological challenge. So countries need to miniaturise and shrink them, which is a hard engineering feat. Each warhead must re-enter the atmosphere and navigate to a separate target. That kind of targeting accuracy is hard to achieve at high speed. Post-Boost Vehicle (PBV) carries the warheads and releases them toward different trajectories, enabling manoeuvre in space and course correction. It is just like rocket science on steroids.
Strategic Implication
The test was closely monitored by US intelligence, including use of RC‑135S Cobra Ball aircraft, from the Arabian Sea region, underscoring global concern. But subsequent reports of failure highlight persistent technical issues in Pakistan's military deployment. Pakistan views Ababeel, with a perceived range of up to 2,200 km, as essential to counter India's S-400 missile defence. Even though no confirmed statement has come from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations yet. The failure to deploy the MIRV missile systems reflects a common pattern of official statements that contrasts with observed results on the ground.

Reports from open-source investigations (OSINT) network suggest that Pakistan's MIRV-capable Ababeel missile test has failed again. The debris of the crash observed in Dera Bugti region of Balochistan was circulating in the Pakistani social media.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in a meeting that there should not be any third party in the bilateral relationship between India and China. Without naming Pakistan, Jaishankar said that India's evolving relationship with China after 2020 and 2021 border skirmishes should not have any focus on the third party’s interests, reported Hindustan Times. As per the report, Jaishankar also conveyed to Wang that China should ensure predictable supply chains and not impose export constraints towards India. This was after China imposed export constraints on critical minerals used in the manufacturing of magnets. This comes after Jaishankar, at his conference last week, expressed contentment over the Indian army restarting rounds in the Demchok and Depsang Plain areas. Additionally, he stated that a “stable border” is the cornerstone of steady bilateral ties between the two nations and endorsed that both armies emphasise scaling down after the transgression in East Ladakh and the Galwan skirmish between the two armies five years ago.
Jaishankar in China
In his first visit to China in five years, EAM Jaishankar raised the issue of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam at the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council in Tianjin. "The UN Security Council, of which some of us are currently members, issued a statement that condemned it in the strongest terms and "underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice," he said while speaking at the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting. The Minister noted that SCO was founded to combat three evils -- terrorism, separatism and extremism-- which "not surprisingly" often occur together. "It is imperative that the SCO, to remain true to its founding objectives, take an uncompromising position on this challenge," Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar in China In his first visit to China in five years, EAM Jaishankar raised the issue of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam at the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council in Tianjin.

Without naming Pakistan, Jaishankar said that India's evolving relationship with China after 2020 and 2021 border skirmishes should not have any focus on the third party’s interests

In a big win for India, the US on Thursday (July 17) designated The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and group responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, as a global terrorist organisation. This is yet another example when Pakistan stands exposed in front of the world and India stands victorious in its attempt to sideline the neighbouring country for its support for terror groups on its soil. The TRF, which claimed responsibility for the horrific Pahalgam terror attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year, was protected by the top leaders of the Pakistani government. Not long ago, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar pushed to omit TRF's mention from a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) press statement.
How Pak got TRF's name dropped from UN statement
Back in April this year, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, while speaking in Pakistan’s National Assembly, revealed that Islamabad used its position as a non-permanent member of the UNSC to alter the language in the US-proposed statement, which originally named and shamed TRF. "On behalf of Pakistan, I had two objections [to the statement]. First, only Pahalgam was mentioned and secondly, the blame was put on The Resistance Forum," Dar said, using an alternate name for TRF. "I thought this was not acceptable. You have to write Jammu and Kashmir along with Pahalgam." He added, " I gave clear instructions to our ambassador at the UN to ensure the amendments are made," he said. According to Dar, the process to finalise the statement took 2.5 days as Pakistan refused to accept the initial draft. "I received phone calls from big capitals to come to a consensus on the draft, but I told them nothing doing," he said. Ultimately, Pakistan’s objections were reflected in the final press statement issued by the UNSC.
UNSC statement that Dar spoke about
The UNSC condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, underlining the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers and the sponsors of "this reprehensible act of terrorism" accountable and bring them to justice. "The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured," it said in the press statement. The 15 members reiterated that any acts of terrorism were criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat, by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
India's proof against TRF
In an Operation Sindoor press briefing, India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that India in the half-yearly report to the monitoring team of the UN's 1267 Sanctions Committee in May and November 2024, had given inputs about TRF. "A group calling itself ‘The Resistance Front’ has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group is a front for the UN-proscribed Pakistani terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Taiba," Misri said. Reham Khan, Imran Khan's former wife, vowed to "replace all the big political people" from Pakistan's politics, stressing that she is launching the new party in response to the intensifying dissatisfaction with current Pakistan politics.

Reham Khan, former wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan, on Tuesday (July 15) announced to launch of her new political party in Pakistan, naming it "Pakistan Republic Party". The journalist and ex-wife of the former Pakistan prime minister has made a formal entry into politics. Khan, while making the announcement at the Karachi Press Club, said that her party would act as the people's voice and would also hold the ruling elite accountable. While referring to her husband, "I've never accepted political positions before. I joined a party once for just one person. But today, I stand on my own terms." She added that she is launching the party as a response to the intensifying dissatisfaction with current Pakistani politics. "This is not just a party, it's a movement to convert politics into service," she said. Reham Khan added that she will be making all her announcements from the Karachi Press Club, stressing, "This place supported me in difficult times." Noting the ongoing issues in Pakistan, the former wife of Imran Khan said that from 2012 to 2015, Pakistan still lacked clean drinking water and basic healthcare. "That's not acceptable anymore". She also shared a moment when a child advised her not to become like other politicians. Khan asserted that her party would represent and become a voice for all neglected regions across all provinces. Slamming the old political parties, she said that her party is not here to "serve personal empires", as she continued her address. "No one in our party will contest from four constituencies at one time, and we're not here to play political games," Khan said. "Our parliament must reflect the people. Every class should be represented by someone who actually belongs to that class," she said. "The whole of Pakistan is my constituency," she stressed, criticising the current government’s approach to governance. Khan vowed that she will release the manifesto of her party soon, which will be based on constitutional values. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday (Jul 11) firmly rejected reports suggesting that the nation's President Asif Ali Zardari may step down and that Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir wanted to become president in his stead. Speaking to the media, Sharif said that the reports were nothing but baseless propaganda and said that Munir has "never shown interest in the presidency". He insisted that the president and the army chief work in tandem with mutual trust, and that no shuffle in their roles was imminent.
What did Sharif say about Asif Munir's alleged presidential bid?
Calling the reports a baseless, malicious propaganda campaign, the Pakistani Sharif dismissed rumours of discord and said that "Field Marshal Asim Munir has never shown interest in the presidency." He also insisted that there was no "plan under discussion" regarding Asif Ali Zardari stepping down or Munir taking over. He stressed that he, Zardari and Munir work with mutual trust and that the relationship they share was based on mutual trust and respect and a shared vision for a better and stronger Pakistan. His statement follows a similar statement by Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. On his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Pakistani interior minister alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to target President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz, and Army Chief Munir. He claimed that they "know exactly who is spreading this false narrative" and insisted that "There has been no conversation, no plan, and no such idea that President Zardari will resign or that the COAS wants to become President".Accusing foreign hostile elements of promoting the so-called smear campaign, he said, "Those behind this disinformation may continue working with foreign agencies, but we will do whatever is needed to make Pakistan stronger — InshAllah." Naqvi added that President Zardari "enjoys a strong and respectful relationship with the leadership of the armed forces." On the 47th anniversary of General Zia-ul-Haq's infamous 1977 military coup, there have been rumours floating on social media, hinting that Munir might replace Zardari as Pakistan's president.
