At least 15 students of Pakistan’s minority Hindu community were targeted by a radical student organisation for celebrating the Holi festival. The incident took place on Monday at Punjab university premises in Lahore.

According to PTI news agency, around 30 Hindu students had gathered to celebrate the festival of colours at the Law College of Punjab University when they were attacked.

"As students gathered at the lawns of the law college, the Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) activists forcibly stopped them from celebrating Holi, which led to a clash resulting in injuries to 15 Hindu students," Kashif Brohi, a university student and an eyewitness told PTI.

He said that they had taken prior permission from the university administration.

The videos going viral on social media purportedly from the spot of violence show a number of&nbsp;violent scuffles between individuals identified as students of the university. WION does not vouch for the authenticity of the videos.&nbsp;

Another student who suffered injuries, Khet Kumar, said that they were attacked again but this time by university guards when they held a demonstration outside the Vice-Chancellor's office to protest the assault by IJT members.

"We have filed an application with the police against the IJT and the security guards involved in thrashing and torturing us, but FIR has not been registered as yet," Kumar said.

Responding to the issue, IJT (Punjab University) spokesperson Ibrahim Shahid denied the involvement of its students.

"None of the students involved in a brawl with the Hindu students belong&nbsp;to the IJT," he said and added the IJT organised 'Quran Reading' at the law college.

Punjab University spokesman Khurram Shahzad told PTI that the students were not given permission to celebrate Holi at the lawns of the law college.

"There would not have been any problem had the celebrations been observed indoors," he was quoted as saying.

He said that the vice chancellor has taken note and ordered an inquiry into the matter.

A 14-year-old girl from the minority Hindu community was abducted from Pakistan’s Sindh province, making it the fourth incident in the past 15 days.

According to local media reports, Chandra Mehraj was kidnapped from Fateh Chowk area of Hyderabad while she was returning home.

Suspecting it to be a case of forced conversion, the parents have lodged a police complaint.

This comes days after the abduction of three Hindu women who were then converted to Islam in the province.

A 14-year-old girl named Meena Meghwar was abducted from Nasarpur area on September 24, while another one was kidnapped in Mirpurkhas town while returning home.

Muslims make up 97 per cent of Pakistan’s population while Hindus are around only 2 per cent, in which close to 90 per cent of them reside in Sindh province bordering Hindu-majority neighbour India.

On average, nearly 1,000 minority girls are abducted and forcefully converted to Islam, claim rights groups, adding that some victims are as young as 12.

There have been several reports of forced conversions, especially of minority Hindu girls, but the governments and politicians in Pakistan have remained silent and done little to address the issue.

Pakistan’s parliamentary committee had rejected a bill against forced conversions in October last year, with the religious affairs minister Noor-ul-Haq Qadri at that time saying the environment was not favourable to bring a law against religious conversions.

He even went on to claim that a law against forcible conversions could disturb peace in the country and make minorities more vulnerable.

In 2016, Sindh province passed a law declaring forced conversion a punishable offence, but the region’s governor refused to ratify the legislation.

14-year-old Hindu girl abducted in Pakistan’s Sindh province, fourth incident in 15 days

A 26-year-old female cop is drawing a lot of attention in Pakistan. Not only because she is employed in a profession that is considered “manly” in a male-dominated country, but also because she belongs to the minority Hindu community.

Manisha Ropeta has become the first woman from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan to become a Deputy Superintendent of Police. She had cracked the coveted Sindh Public Service Commission exam to attain the top post.

Stating the reason why she joined the police forces, Ropeta was quoted as saying, “Women are the most oppressed and the target of many crimes in our society and I joined the police because I feel we need 'protector' women in our society.”

Ropeta, who belongs to a middle-class family from Jacobabad in interior Sindh province, wants to end the preconceived notion that girls with a good family background should not have anything to do with the police or district courts.

“From childhood I and my sisters have seen the same old system of patriarchy where girls are told if they want to get educated and work it can only be as teachers or doctors,” Ropeta said.

Though she is currently under training, Ropeta will be posted in the crime-infested area of Lyari, according to PTI news agency.

She feels that working as a senior police officer really empowers women and gives them authority.

Though she had aspirations to become a doctor initially, there was one turning point in her life that made her choose a different career.

“I had failed to clear MBBS entrance examination&nbsp;by one mark. I then told my family that I was taking a degree in physical therapy but at the same time I prepared for the Sindh Public Services Commission examinations, and I passed that getting 16th position among 468 candidates,” she added.

Her three other sisters are all doctors and her youngest brother is also studying medicine.

“I want to lead a feminisation drive and encourage gender equality in the police force. I myself have always been very inspired and attracted to the police work,” the DSP says.
