The Jammu and Kashmir National Independence Alliance (JKNIA), a UK-based umbrella alliance comprising Kashmiri diaspora and civil organisations, today held a protest demonstration outside the Pakistani High Commission in London seeking global pressure on Pakistan for human rights violations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Gilgit.

The demonstrators demanded fundamental rights for Kashmiris in Pakistan and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

They said Pakistan had thrown an iron curtain across Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Gilgit. Slogans were also raised for Pakistan to leave the region.

Shabir Chaudhry, spokesperson of the Kashmir National Party, who participated in the demonstration, while speaking to the media, stated that the protest had been organised to raise the issue of human rights atrocities against Kashmiris in Pakistan and Gilgit.

Referring to the killing of Arif Shahid, leader of the All Parties National Alliance in Rawalpindi in 2013, Chaudhry said there was no doubt that Shahid had been killed by the Pakistani establishment simply because he had raised his voice for the basic rights of the people of Pakistan and Gilgit.

Chaudhry further said that it was odd that the Pakistani Government could refer to Burhan Wani, commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen as a martyr but people like Shahid, who never raised a gun against Pakistan, are labelled as terrorists.

Chaudhry said that Shahid must be declared a martyr for having spoken all his life for the rights of the marginalised in Pakistan.

Pakistan's military killed at least 14 militants in air strikes and a ground operation in a restive tribal region near the Afghan border on Tuesday.

The army offensive took place in the mountainous terrain of Rajgal in Khyber region, one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal districts where the military has been fighting Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants for over a decade.

"The operation was conducted in areas close to Afghan border in which 11 terrorists were also injured," the military said in a statement.

Pakistan has been battling a homegrown Islamist insurgency since 2004, following the US-led invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan in 2001 and the subsequent spillover of militants into its territory.

The army launched the "Zarb-e-Azb" operation in June 2014 in a bid to wipe out militant bases in North Waziristan tribal area and so bring an end to the bloody insurgency that has cost thousands of civilian lives.

Security in the country has since improve. Scattered attacks still take place, but they are fewer and of a lesser intensity than in previous years.

The 21-year-old daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma is set to marry the Eswatini king “for love” and become his 16th wife, a spokesman for Africa’s last remaining monarchy told BBC.

Nomcebo Zuma was present at the annual reed dance—a traditional celebration of passage for young women and girls—and was named as the liphovela (italics), meaning royal fiancee in Swati.

The days-long reed dance is a traditional rite of womanhood, with young women singing and dancing bare-chested, wearing traditional clothing that includes anklets and thick colourful tassels, some carrying mock swords and shields.

The 56-year-old Eswatini monarch, King Mswati II is currently in a polygamous arrangement with 11 wives—and has been married 15 times in total.

The Eswatini monarchy spokesperson dismissed any suggestion of marriage being a political alliance. He said instead the marriage is happening because of love.

Two armed militants attacked a police station in Indian Kashmir on Monday, police said, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his annual Independence Day speech in New Delhi.

The gunmen were unable to take control of the police station in the old city of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, but did kill one police reservist and injure nine in the attack. WION's Srinagar correspondent reports that the man slain was the commandant of the 49th battalion. The CRPF spokesman said that firing has stopped, but that a search and combing operation is currently going on. Two militants are believed to have been killed.

Separately, the Indian Army said it had foiled an attempt to infiltrate two militants from Pakistan into India. The two men were killed in the Uri sector of the de facto border between the neighbouring countries in North Kashmir.

Kashmir has witnessed violent protests since the July 8 killing of militant leader Burhan Wani, a commander of the Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Hizbul Mujahideen, with 54 people killed and several thousand wounded in clashes with security forces.

Modi avoided direct reference to Kashmir in his Independence Day speech, but he did criticise people in Pakistan for celebrating when what he called terrorist attacks were launched on Indian soil.

The prime minister met national party leaders on Friday to seek ways to end the worst unrest in Kashmir since 2010, but there was no agreement to send an all-party delegation to the region for talks to try and calm tensions there.

Both India and Pakistan rule Kashmir in part but claim it in full. The nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two of their three wars since independence 69 years ago over the Muslim-majority region where the Line of Control, or de facto border, still runs roughly where the guns fell silent in 1948.

Militants open fire in India's Srinagar, 1 security personnel dead, 9 injured

India's Wagah border in northern Punjab state witnessed a lively and colourful evening as hundreds of people gathered on Sunday (August 14) for the Beating Retreat Ceremony on the eve of Independence Day.

A cacophony of patriotic slogans and cheering is witnessed regularly when the ceremony is conducted every evening at Wagah in Amritsar district.

However, the usual drills by India's Border Security Force (BSF) and the Pakistani Rangers, paramilitaries of the two bordering nations, were replaced by more complicated and energetic exercises on the special occasion on Sunday.

Hundreds thronged the galleries and sang along as patriotic songs were played, while dancers in bright outfits enthralled the audiences.

The event was marked by a significant rise in attendance on the Pakistani side too, which celebrated its 69th Independence Day on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the BSF and the Pakistani Rangers exchanged sweets at the border.

India achieved independence from the British on August 15, 1947, ending decades of rule.

But celebrations to mark independence are tinged with sadness because they also recall the bloody partition from Pakistan in which hundreds and thousands died.

Separatists are bracing for a major showdown with the Mehbooba Mufti-led government as they called for grand celebrations to mark Pakistan's Independence Day on August 14 in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Joint Resistance Forum, an amalgam of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik have called for a referendum march to Lal Chowk and offering special prayers for the stability of Pakistan after every prayer session (namaz) on August 14.

Separatists have identified scores of places where they plan to hoist Pakistani flags on Sunday. People have been asked to march with Pakistani flags and celebrate Independence Day with great fanfare.

Even militant outfits have jumped on the bandwagon calling for grand celebrations on Pakistan Day. "Pakistan can't celebrate its Independence Day when Kashmir is burning and its people are suffering," said Mehmood Shah, Lashkar-e-Taiba chief for Kashmir.

The wary Jammu and Kashmir government has beefed up security across Kashmir to prevent the situation from worsening. "We have made all arrangements for ensuring safety and security of the people of the Valley", said a top government officer.

Jammu and Kashmir police have launched a massive crackdown against the stone throwers and separatists across Kashmir. More than 1,000 people have been taken into custody and some of them have been slapped with Public Safety Act (PSA) to send a signal that nobody will be spared for fomenting trouble.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has withdrawn broadband services in most places bringing curtains on the limited internet services in the Valley. The government has already imposed a curfew by suspending mobile internet services.

What has worried the security establishment is the call for observing India's Independence day as Black Day on August 15.

"From 7:00 am onwards block all the roads towards and around the place of celebration of Indian Independence Day; District development commissioners are asked not to hoist the Indian Flag in any part of the Jammu and Kashmir. Raise black flags on your houses, shops, market centers and local chowks wear black dresses or black bands on this day", said the spokesman of Joint Resistance Forum.

Director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir, K Rajendra Kumar said close liaison should be maintained at every level to foil any attempt by troublemakers to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere.

"To foil any attempt by the troublemakers to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere, close liaison should be maintained at every level and the officers supervising different components should be briefed accordingly. The comprehensive security grid and deployment mechanism for conduct of peaceful celebrations needs to be fully implemented", he said while chairing high level security meeting.

During the meeting threadbare discussions were held with regard to deployment and maintenance of law and order in the Valley during the celebrations.

"It was told that sufficient man power has been earmarked for the security of the venues, where the ID functions are scheduled to be held. Installation of CCTV cameras and security gadgets at the venues, intelligence gathering and preventive measures to check the activities of anti-national elements were also discussed", said a police spokesman.

Meanwhile, another youth who was injured during firing incident succumbed at hospital taking the death toll to 57 since the unrest began after the killing of Hizbul Mujhadeen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.

Police said the situation remained by and large peaceful throughout Kashmir valley although six incidents of stone pelting were reported from Bandipora, Baramulla and Srinagar on Saturday.

Police said restrictions under section 144 Code of Criminal Procedure remained in force across the Valley, however, curfew was imposed in Srinagar and Anantnag town only.

Police said two police personnel were seriously injured when miscreants disrupted the traffic movement and pelted stones on police and security forces at Ashtingoo Bandipora.

"They were referred to Srinagar. One of them has been seriously injured in the eye and has been shifted for advance treatment to Delhi", the spokesman added.

Six crew members of a Pakistani government helicopter which crash-landed in Afghanistan's volatile east have been released, an official said today, after they were taken hostage by the Afghan Taliban.

The crew "was released in an inter-tribe exchange on the Pakistan-Afghan border (and) arrived in Islamabad today," foreign ministry spokesman Nafees Zakaria said in a statement.

He did not specify who had been holding the crew hostage nor what kind of exchange had secured their release.

All six people - five Pakistanis and a Russian navigator - are "safe and in good health," he said, adding that the helicopter belonged to the Punjab provincial government.

A senior Pakistani official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the crew's safe return.

After the August 4 crash, local authorities in Afghanistan said that the six-person crew had been taken hostage by the Afghan Taliban.

Militants set the Mi-17 transport helicopter on fire and took the crew to a Taliban-controlled area after it made an emergency landing in Logar province.

The crew included retired Pakistani military officers and a Russian navigator, Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported at the time.

Pakistan had sought permission to fly a helicopter - being sent to Russia for overhauling - over Afghan air space.

Pakistani army chief general Raheel Sharif said he had spoken to Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani after the crash in a bid to secure the crew's release.

"President Ashraf Ghani assured all possible assistance in this regard," he posted on Twitter.

Kabul has long accused Pakistan of supporting the Taliban and continuing to nurture sanctuaries on its soil in the hope of maintaining influence in Afghanistan.

Analysts said it was not clear how the Pakistan government had secured the crew's safe release.

"Our government is tight-lipped while the army also did not say anything about the role of the Afghan government," security analyst Hasan Askari told AFP.

The Afghan Taliban have not commented on the conditions of the release.

"One thing is however, very clear - that Afghan Taliban certainly do not want to deteriorate their ties with Pakistan," Askari said.

Askari questioned why the MI-17 was being send to Russia for repairs through Afghan airspace.

"It appeared to be kind of a mysterious exercise," he added.

Pakistan's army uses Russian-made MI-17 helicopters, several of which have crashed in recent years.

In February, an army officer was killed when a military helicopter crashed in northern Pakistan on a routine night training mission.

Last August, 12 people were killed when a helicopter belonging to the army crashed in northwest Pakistan.

And seven people - including two foreign ambassadors - died in May last year when an MI-17 army helicopter crashed at a holiday resort in the hills of Gilgit.

Pakistan's foreign ministry spokesman did not specify who had been holding the crew hostage nor what kind of exchange secured their release

Pakistan has, in a veiled statement, indicated that India's intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) might have collaborated with the local militant groups in carrying out Monday's terrorist attack in Quetta, which killed more than 70 people.

"Involvement of foreign elements working in cahoots with their local contacts in the condemnable terrorist attack in Quetta, which took a huge toll on the lives of innocent people, cannot be ruled out," the Express Tribune quoted foreign office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria as saying at the weekly press briefing in Islamabad yesterday.

Zakaria, who was responding to a question regarding the statement by Balochistan chief minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri that RAW was behind the Quetta bombing, claimed the Indian intelligence agencies remained involved in subversive and terrorist activities in the country, particularly in Balochistan and Karachi.

"The confessional statement by a serving [Indian] naval officer, who was apprehended by our law enforcement agencies has indeed vindicated Pakistan`s claim. The confession has led to significant success in rounding up elements of the network," he added.

Zakaria's statements come as tensions between the two Asian neighbours have soured in wake of the unrest in Kashmir.

He also dismissed India's claims of cross-LoC infiltration.

"Pakistan remains committed to the policy of not allowing its territory for any terrorist activity against anyone," he said.

Meanwhile, another Express Tribune report quoted a key commander of Pakistan Army today where he claimed that 'the neighbouring country has launched an unconventional war with Pakistan'.

“The arrest of Kulbhushan Yadav, the RAW agent, from Balochistan is an indication that India has mounted an unconventional war on us,” said Commander Southern Command Lt-Gen Aamer Riaz, according to the report.

“Conspiracies are being hatched against Pakistan and foreign elements are aiding local militants to fuel unrest in the country,” he claimed.

In wake of the Kashmir issue following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8, Zakaria said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif`s foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz has written a letter to the Arab League secretary-general seeking his attention on the Kashmir valley.

Pakistan's Quetta ripped apart by second blast in 3 days, 13 hurt

Pakistan's legendary former captain and batsman Hanif Muhammad, who held the record for the longest innings in Test cricket, passed away today after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

A spokesman for the Aga Khan Hospital, where he was being treated, confirmed that Hanif had passed away at the age of 81.

"He was in Intensive Care Unit and on a ventilator for respiratory problems and passed away today," he said.

Hanif, had earlier in the day, been declared clinically dead for around six minutes before he was revived back to life.

Hanif's son Shoaib Muhammad had first announced from the hospital on various television channels that his father had passed away after losing a protracted battle with various ailments. But few minutes later it was clarified that Hanif was still alive.

"His heartbeat had stopped for six minutes but the doctors managed to revive his heartbeat back," Shoaib said.

But after a few hours, Shoaib also confirmed that his father was no more.

"He fought hard with his ailments and he was very sick for the last few years since he was diagnosed with lung cancer four years back," Shoaib told PTI.

"Our family is distraught but we only ask his fans and supporters to pray for him that God grant him a place in heaven. He was in a lot of pain the last few weeks but didn't give up such was his fighting nature," Shoaib, himself a former Test batsman, said.

Hanif was admitted to the hospital on July 30 after respiratory problems and was then put on a ventilator and shifted to intensive care unit.

Hanif was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013 and went to London for surgery and returned home well but his condition deteriorated in time as the cancer spread in his body.

Hanif was a member of Pakistan's first touring Test squad that went to India in 1954-55 and went on to play 55 Tests scoring a memorable 337 runs against the West Indies in 1957-58. It remains the longest innings in Test history (and stood as the longest in all first-class cricket for over 40 years).

In his 55-Test career, Hanif amassed 3915 runs at an average of 43.98, including 12 hundreds. In a first-class career spanning 238 matches, Hanif scored 17059 runs at an average of 52.32.

Pakistanis in Quetta demanded better security today, two days after a suicide bombing at a hospital killed 74 people.

Monday's suicide bombing, that hit grief-stricken colleagues crowding around the body of the assassinated head of the provincial bar association, was the deadliest jihadist attack in Pakistan this year.

Shreds of black cloth from slain lawyers trademark dark suits still littered the ground today at the Civil Hospital in Quetta, where glass from shattered windows remained and blood stained the walls.

Medical staff said up to 60 of those killed were lawyers who had gathered to mourn the president of the Baluchistan Bar Association, Bilal Anwar Kasi.

"This type of attack happened in 2010, too, this is just a repetition. Yesterday, I warned the lawyers who had gathered here for the martyred lawyer Bilal that, God forbid, such an attack could happen again, so they should reduce the crowds," Abdul Rehman Miankhel, Medical Superintendent at the Civil Hospital said.

"I believe that our security is not adequate. It should be heightened, The number of guards should be increased and they should always be present at the gate. Walk-through (security) gates should also be erected. This is my suggestion. This will prevent any terrorist-type people from entering the hospital premises," added medical officer Dr. Malik Sultan.

Security staff at the hospital said they asked the government to deploy paramilitary police forces at the hospital months ago, but nothing had been done so far.

Both a Pakistani Taliban faction, Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, and Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, although Pakistani analysts and officials expressed doubt about any IS involvement.

Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, like myriad Islamist militants waging war against Pakistan's government, consider civil society workers such as lawyers as part of the system they seek to overthrow to establish their vision of strict Islamic law.

Shops, businesses, schools and universities in Quetta and beyond remained closed as the government announced three days of mourning.

Pakistan has rejected India's charge of infiltration in Kashmir, after its envoy Abdul Basit was summoned and handed over a "strong demarche" over Pakistan's continued support to cross-border terrorism.

"We strongly reject Indian claim of any cross-LOC infiltration. Pakistan remains committed to the policy of not allowing its territory for any terrorist activity against anyone," the foreign office said in statement last night when asked about India summoning the Pakistani high commissioner.

Amid growing strain in ties, India yesterday summoned Basit and handed him a "strong demarche" over Pakistan's continued support to cross-border terrorism by pushing in trained terrorists to carry out attacks, particularly in Kashmir.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar called Basit to his South Block office and lodged a strong protest over the issue as he made a specific reference to LeT terrorist and Pakistani national Bahadur Ali, who was captured recently in North Kashmir during an encounter.

Ali, born in the Zia Bagga village of Lahore, was arrested by Indian authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on July 25 with weapons (AK 47 rifle, live rounds, grenades, grenade launcher etc) as also sophisticated communication equipment and other material of Pakistani/ international origin, according to the demarche issued to Basit.

Pakistan rejects India's 'cross-border inflitration' claim

An American national, who was blacklisted and deported from Pakistan in 2011 after he was allegedly caught spying on sensitive installations, has been arrested after he arrived at the airport here and got clearance from immigration officials.

Matthew Craig Barrett, who was barred from entering the country after being deported on charges of espionage, arrived at Benazir Bhutto International airport in the morning yesterday and was granted entry by the immigration officials.

When it came to the notice of interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, he ordered the arrest of Barrett, and suspended immigration officials at the airport for negligence, according to a statement by the ministry.

Barrett was later picked up by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police officials in a joint raid on a guest house in the capital and an FIR was lodged against him for violation of immigration laws, the statement said.

The interior minister has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the grant of a Pakistani visa to Barrett, the Dawn reported.

A case has also been registered against two FIA immigration officials, Sub-Inspector Raja Asif and his son Ehteshamul Haq. Ehtesham has been arrested, while raids were being conducted to arrest his father, police sources said.

The minister has already suspended an assistant director of the FIA as well as the immigration officials who were on duty when Barrett was cleared by authorities at the airport.

He has also issued directions for the formation of a joint investigation team for a thorough probe into the matter.

The interior ministry said that action would also be initiated against officials at the Pakistani consulate in Houston, who were responsible for issuing a visa to Barrett.

A spokesperson for the US embassy in Islamabad told the daily that the Privacy Act prohibited him from releasing any information about the American citizen without his consent.

Adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said the growing emergency in the area is due to “the atrocious Indian brutalities against unarmed and defenseless civilians.” The foreign affairs adviser made the formal request by writing a letter to the international president of MSF. He said stressed on the immediate requirement of eye surgeons, as hundreds of people suffered severe eye injuries caused by use of pellet guns by security forces. Many people have lost their eyesight from shotgun injuries. India has urged its security forces to act with restraint as they try to keep protesters off the streets and quell near-daily violence that has flared since July 9, but some have accused troops of using excessive force to control the protests. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced it will release the last instalment of a $6.6 billion economic bailout package to Pakistan, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hailed an end to the country's reliance on the lender.

The decision to release the final tranche worth $102 million of the three-year programme came after a review of the country's economic performance that found it was meeting most reform indicators but still needed to broaden the tax net.

IMF delegation head Harald Finger said growth was projected to reach five per cent supported by a construction boom linked to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, an ambitious infrastructure upgrade project intended to link China's western Xinjiang region to Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea.

"All indicative targets and structural benchmarks (SB) were met, except for the delayed notification of multi-year tariffs for three power distribution companies," Finger said Thursday in Dubai, referring to measures intended to reduce major fluctuations in electricity costs.

The release of the final tranche is subject to approval by the IMF's executive board though that is considered a formality.

In Islamabad, Sharif told lawmakers from his party that his government had ended the country's reliance on foreign multilateral assistance and was saying "goodbye" to the Fund.

"With the grace of God, we will say goodbye to IMF after this (agreement)," he said.

Sharif had been under pressure from the opposition for seeking the loan in 2013 because its conditions included forcing the government to raise taxes and energy prices.

The IMF note cautioned however that to consolidate and reinforce the gains achieved in the last three years, it was important to "strengthen public finances and external buffers, broaden the tax net, (and) improve public financial management," among other measures.

International Monetary Fund to release final instalment of $6.6 bn loan to Pakistan after satisfactory review of its economic performance

Pushing for inclusion of Islamic content in school textbooks is nothing new in Pakistan. Dawn reported in 2014 that the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wanted to reintroduce verses of the Koran, dealing with jihad (Holy War), and adding passages on the divine creation of the universe into science textbooks. Lately, the Express Tribune of Pakistan reported that Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) is pressuring the ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training (FEPT) to include in public school curriculum such Koranic verses which make explicit mention to the concept of jihad.

As part of its mission statement to “ensure holistic growth”, the FEPT has already proposed that all public schools in the country should include the provision of teaching the Koran to its students from grade 1 to 12. The holy book will be a “compulsory subject”, the Minister of State for Education Balighur Rehman confirmed last month.

Much to the chagrin of CII members, however, the minister’s proposal seems to have left out verses that mention jihad. On reviewing the proposal the top religious legislative advisory body expressed reservations at such exclusions. CII member Maulana Zahid Qasmi said, “484 verses of jihad are mentioned in the Quran but they were deliberately not included in the syllabus so students could not be taught about it”.

Education falls under the legislative control of the provinces in Pakistan. FEPT is definitely making a centralising bid here in trying to co-ordinate the nature of religious education on a national basis. In the plea of making Koranic education affordable by offering it in public schools, FEPT makes a clear attempt not to leave religious instruction in the hands of privately employed Quran teacher or to religious seminaries, as is the current practise in Pakistan. Its guarantee of enabling a student to recite the Koran in five years, however, faces a challenge, as powerful members of the religious body object to the very authenticity of the project.

8 bizarre customs practised in South Asia

Indian interior minister Rajnath Singh's speech during the seventh SAARC home ministers' meeting held in Pakistan's capital Islamabad was blacked out.

Members of the Indian media, who had gone to report on the conference, were not allowed to cover the speech. They were reportedly kept at a distance by Pakistani officials, which led to a verbal dual between officials of the two sides.

Only Pakistan state PTV was allowed to cover introductory speeches of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and interior minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan. Even private Pakistani media was not allowed to cover the event.

As per reports, Singh has left for Islamabad airport to return to India. Media reports also said that his scheduled news conference at Delhi airport has been cancelled.

During a terse speech in Islamabad, Singh said that there should be strongest of action not only against terrorists but also against organisations, individuals and nations which support terror. He said mere condemnation of terrorism and individual acts by terrorists was not enough as far as India was concerned.

Launching a veiled attack on Pakistan for glorifying Hizbul commander Burhan Wani as a martyr, Singh said that there should be no glorification of terrorists, adding there is no good or bad terrorism.

The ongoing strain in Indo-Pak relations was evident when Singh came face- to-face with Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan for the first time today. The two leaders barely shook hands at the entrance of the venue of the conference at the posh Serena Hotel.

Singh arrived in Islamabad yesterday amid protests by supporters of the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Harkat ul Mujahideen. The protests were held at a distance of about 10 kilometres from the National Assembly. Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin was also present during the protests.

Indian interior minister's speech blacked out at SAARC summit in Pakistan

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said the country is committed to jointly working with South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries for fighting terrorism, corruption and organised crimes.

Addressing the inaugural session of the SAARC home ministers' conference, Sharif cited Pakistan's anti-terror operations in restive tribal areas and National Action Plan to emphasise "the government's determination to eliminate the scourge of terrorism from our soil for good".

He said the SAARC region is blessed with tremendous human and natural resources. "So, SAARC can and should provide a platform to optimally harness the regional potential for peace and prosperity of our people."

Sharif said such an approach is in sync with his government's vision of "peace for development and peaceful neighbourhood". "Pakistan has always been supportive of initiatives taken by SAARC to advance its ideals and objectives as enshrined in its charter," he said.

He said Pakistan has also been a strong advocate of stepping up regional efforts to ensure energy security through sharing of indigenous sources.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan shares the perception that connectivity is critical to the progress and prosperity of the region and supports, in principle, road, air, rail and water connectivity within the region.

"Realisation of the goals and objectives envisaged in SAARC charter is our collective responsibility," he said.

Addressing the inaugural session, SAARC secretary general Arjun Bahadur Thapa said there is a need to take effective measures to tackle the menace of terrorism, narcotics, cyber crimes and other transnational crimes.

The day-long 7th meeting of the eight-member grouping is being held to review the progress on decisions taken in previous meetings. SAARC comprises Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

'Realisation of the goals and objectives envisaged in SAARC charter is our collective responsibility,' Nawaz Sharif said

Pak PM: We are committed to working with SAARC to combat terror

The Pentagon will not pay Pakistan $300 million in military reimbursements after US secretary of defence Ash Carter decided not to tell Congress that Pakistan was taking adequate action against the Haqqani network, a US official said.

Relations between the two countries have been frayed over the past decade, with US officials frustrated by what they term Islamabad's unwillingness to act against Islamist groups such as the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network.

"The funds could not be released to the government of Pakistan at this time because the secretary has not yet certified that Pakistan has taken sufficient action against the Haqqani network," Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said on Wednesday.

The $300 million comes under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF), a US defence department programme to reimburse allies that have incurred costs in supporting counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. Pakistan is the largest recipient.

"This decision does not reduce the significance of the sacrifices that the Pakistani military has undertaken over the last two years," Stump said.

According to Pentagon data, about $14 billion has already been paid to Pakistan under the CSF since 2002.

The decision by the Pentagon is a sign that while it sees some progress by Pakistan in its military operations in North Waziristan, much work remains.

Pakistan rejects harboring militants but says there are limits to how much it can do as it is already fighting multiple Islamist groups and is wary of a "blowback" in the form of more militant attacks on its soil.

"Pakistan does not draw any distinction between any terrorists and we have taken up the fight against terrorism and the terrorist elements within Pakistan," foreign office spokesman Nafees Zakaria told reporters in Islamabad on Thursday.

"These reimbursements enable the United States to support Pakistan's ongoing counterterrorism efforts in a manner that serves shared interests of both the countries."

Relations between the United States and Pakistan were tested in May by a US drone strike that killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour on Pakistani soil.

There has been growing resistance in the US Congress to sending money to Pakistan. Many lawmakers have expressed concern about its nuclear program, commitment to fighting terrorist organisations and cooperation in the Afghanistan peace process.

In March, Republican senator Bob Corker said he would use his power as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to bar any US funding for Islamabad's purchase of $700 million of Lockheed Martin Corp F-16 fighter jets.

Pakistan will firmly crackdown on terrorist forces like the "East Turkestan Islamic Movement" (ETIM) and protect the security of "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor", (CEPC) state-run China Military Online quoted him as saying during his meeting with China's top military official Fang Fenghui in Urumqi, provincial capital of Xinjiang on Tuesday.

Fang is the member of China's Central Military Commission (CMC), the highest military body and Chief of the Joint Staff Department of the CMC.

Sharif was in Urumqi to attend the Quadrilateral Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism in Counter Terrorism by Afghanistan-China-Pakistan-Tajikistan Armed Forces.

His assurance of firm crackdown followed China-Pakistan border police recently launching first joint patrols of the disputed Pakistan Controlled Kashmir (POK) border amid reports that 114 Uyghurs Muslims from Xinjiang joined Islamic State in Syria.

Xinjiang, the home for Uyghurs who resented the increasing settlements of Hans from other provinces has witnessed violent attacks in recent years.

China blamed ETIM, a separatist outfit linked to al-Qaeda for the attacks. Under pressure from China, Pakistan army has conducted military operations against ETIM training bases in the tribal areas bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent months.

Xinjiang recently adopted new anti-terrorism rules stipulating reassessment of risk levels of prisoners before release and solitary confinement and education for ring leaders.

The new rules stipulated that recruiting, training or transporting terror-related personnel will be regarded as carrying out terror activities, as will as organising or instigating others to illegally cross into another country to participate in terror activities or terror training, state-run Global Times reported.

The Quadrilateral Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism formed by China significantly includes Afghanistan which also shares borders with Xinjiang.

Indian home minister Rajnath Singh today arrived here to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) interior ministers' conference tomorrow during which he is expected to raise the issue of most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and cross border terrorism.

Accompanied by a delegation comprising officials from his ministry and external affairs, Singh, who is on his maiden visit to Pakistan, will be underlining the need for meaningful cooperation among the South Asian countries. Before leaving for Islamabad to attend the day-long SAARC home ministers conference, the home minister said he was "looking forward to underscore the imperative of meaningful cooperation within the region against terrorism and organised crime."

"This Conference provides a platform to discuss issues pertaining to security," said Singh, who is expected to tell Pakistan to stop sponsoring terror in India and rein in groups like Lashker-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Singh's visit comes notwithstanding threat by LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, who warned of a countrywide protest in Pakistan by his outfit if Singh arrives in Islamabad to attend the SAARC ministerial conference.

Tomorrow's meeting is preceded by the 7th Meeting of the SAARC interior/home secretaries which is being held today. The union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, who is leading the Indian delegation, arrived here yesterday. There is little possibility of Singh having a bilateral meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in the wake of strain in Indo-Pak relations after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in Jammu and Kashmir on July 8.

Not only did Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif praise Wani but he also remarked that "Kashmir will one day become Pakistan", a comment which evoked a sharp reaction from external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who said his dream of the state becoming a part of his country "will not be realised even at the end of eternity".

Apart from terrorism, other key issues to be discussed include liberalisation of visa, illegal trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and small arms and how to make coordinated and concerted efforts to combat such menace.

The three-tier meeting began at the joint secretary-level and then moves on to secretary and home minister-level meetings. The focus of the meeting will also be on strengthening networking among police forces of SAARC member-countries and also enhance information-sharing among law enforcement agencies.

Coke Studio, known for bringing musicians from every corner into the mainstream, recently took a different kind of initiative in its Pakistani edition.

Titled "Coke Studio for the Deaf", this special program tried to make the Coke Studio experience accessible to the deaf community of Pakistan, reports the Dawn. According to Ibrahim Khan, Coca-Cola brand manager, "Coke Studio reaches millions around the world, but not the nine million hearing-impaired people in Pakistan. We wanted to bring a small change in that regard."

The makers used a combination of lights and vibrations to make some members of the hearing-impaired community experience music. This initiative has been established in partnership with the Deaf Reach program of the Family Education Services Foundation (FESF).

According to Deaf Reach founder Richard Geary, "Working together with Coke Studio has been a really amazing experience. Not just because we got to see the experience the young people enjoyed, but to create awareness in the country and internationally about the need to provide more opportunities for the deaf community."

"This is what we try to do at Deaf Reach with our school program, vocational training program and jobs program. And we'd like to engage with other forms of sectors who can make a difference to these kids' lives," he added. Indian home minister Rajnath Singh will be travelling to Pakistan as per schedule, sources at the ministry of external affairs said today. This is despite Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed's warning of a countrywide protest by his outfit.

Singh is scheduled to visit Pakistan on August 3, to attend a SAARC ministerial conference.

Accusing Singh of being "responsible for the killings of innocent Kashmiris", JuD chief Hafiz Saeed has warned of a countrywide protest in Pakistan if the Indian minister travels to the country. Sources, however, said, "The visit is on track. India attains highest priority to SAARC. The visit is strictly to abide by our SAARC commitments." They also said that the host country (Pakistan) is responsible for the home minister's security.

The alleged mastermind of the 2008 terror attack in western city of Mumbai in a statement said, "If Singh comes to Islamabad on August 3, the JuD would hold countrywide protest to tell the world that the Pakistani rulers might have compulsions to receive Kashmiris' killers, but the people of Pakistan are siding with oppressed Kashmiris."

"I want to ask the Pakistani government will it add insult to injury to the wounds of Kashmiris by welcoming Rajnath who is responsible for the killings of innocent Kashmiris," he said. "It will be ironical, as on the one hand the whole Pakistani nation is protesting against the Indian atrocities in Kashmir, and on the other hand the Pakistani rulers will be garlanding Singh," said the statement .

External affairs ministry has also made it clear that there will be no bilateral meeting between Singh and Pakistani leaders during his visit on August 3 and 4.

India and Pakistan are witnessing growing bitterness after Pakistan and its Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made provocative statements on the Kashmir situation in the wake of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani's killing on July 8.

Not only did Sharif praise Wani but he also remarked that "Kashmir will one day become Pakistan", a comment which evoked a sharp reaction from External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who said his dream of the state becoming a part of his country "will not be realised even at the end of eternity".

Further needling India, Pakistan has demanded an independent inquiry into the "extrajudicial" killing of Wani, and claimed that the denial of "plebiscite" to Kashmiri people was behind the flare-up in the Valley.
