Meanwhile, the father of another dengue patient Nazmul Sheikh, said, "My son works on a cargo ferry. When he got sick, his boss admitted him here and called us. I came from the village to take care of my son. Today is our fourth day in the hospital.” 
 
There is no availability of a drug or vaccine which specifically treats dengue, which is a common disease during the June-to-September monsoon season in South Asia as the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for spreading the disease, thrives in stagnant water.

Risk of major measles outbreak in London, warns UK Health Security Agency

Peru has declared a state health emergency after detecting the Guillain-Barré syndrome outbreak. The emergency will last for 90 days as officials grapple with an “unusual increase" in cases.

Since June 2023, 182 cases have been reported nationwide, of which 147 have been discharged, 31 remain hospitalised, and four have died, MercoPress news agency reported.

GBS is a rare disorder that affects the immune system causing it to attack the nerves of the body. It can lead to muscle weakness and in severe cases it can cause paralysis or even death.

The health emergency follows&nbsp;a request by Health Minister César Vásquez&nbsp;last Wednesday, who noted that an increase in the number of cases&nbsp;could mean “a lack of immunoglobulin" (antibodies).

In its official statement published on Saturday, the Peru government said that 103 cases were reported until June 23 and the “average monthly number of cases was less than 20 cases per month at the national level" (less than that reported in years prior to the 2019 outbreak).

The decree by President Dina Boluarte also states that around US$ 3.27 million will be allocated to improving patient care, reinforcing control on the number of detections, and drafting reports for the population and health personnel.

<h2>What is that Guillain-Barre syndrome?</h2>

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder and an autoimmune disease.

The first symptoms of the disease are weakness and tingling in your hands and feet.

"The damage prevents the nerves from sending certain information, such as touch sensations, to the spinal cord and brain. This causes a feeling of numbness. Last week, the Central African nation, said that an investigation into the suspected cases of hemorrhagic fever in the rural eastern region bordering Gabon and Cameroon was underway and only three people had shown some “light symptoms.” However, days later, the Health Minister of Equatorial Guinea, Mitoha Ondo’o Ayekaba, said that a “health alert” has been issued in Kie-Ntem province and the neighbouring Mongomo district.&nbsp;

India’s southern Kerala state on Monday recorded two cases of norovirus— a gastrointestinal zoonotic disease that is transmitted through close contact who have already been infected.

According to PTI news agency, two students of Class 1 and 2 of a school at Kakkanad were found to be infected with the virus.

Following the detection of two cases, around 62 students of the school and a few parents developed similar symptoms after which two samples were sent for testing at the State Public Laboratory.

“The health condition of the children is stable. The Health Department personnel inspected the school which is now temporarily closed. We are holding online awareness sessions to the children and parents. The classrooms and the toilets have now been sanitised," the District Medical Officer said in a statement.

This is the second time that the state has reported norovirus outbreak. Last year, two children were found infected with the same virus at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram.

Newsom said the state officials are working across all levels of government to tame the spread of the disease through testing, contract tracing and community outreach.

The second highest number of probable cases have been reported from the American continent, including 334 cases from the United States of America, followed by the Western Pacific Region (70 cases), the South-East Asia region (19) and the Eastern Mediterranean region (2).

Seventeen countries are reporting more than five probable cases, with the WHO suspecting it to be a case of undercounting due to limited enhanced surveillance systems.

“The actual number of cases may be underestimated, in part due to the limited enhanced surveillance systems in place. The case count is expected to change as more information and verified data become available,” the agency said.
