Deep beneath the rocky island of Olkiluoto which is located off Finland’s west coast, lies a remarkable engineering feat, a facility designed to safely store the country’s most dangerous nuclear waste for hundreds of thousands of years.

Authorities in Switzerland have selected a site in the northern pary of the country, close to the German border, for a storage facility for nuclear waste. The storage facility will be deep underground.

Expanding its effort to cut carbon emissions, China opened its first plant that will turn radioactive waste into glass. The disposal technique was carried out on Saturday at a facility in Guangyuan in southwest Sichuan province, according to state news outlet The Global Times which cited the country’s State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defence.
