The amphibious assault ship arrived at the Sasebo naval base in south-western Japan ahead of the first joint exercise among Japan, France, the US and the UK.

The drill comes as tensions run high in East Asia after North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile early Saturday amid speculation that Pyongyang could conduct another nuclear test.&nbsp;

The drill will run from May 3 through May 22 in the waters surrounding Japan as well as the Pacific islands of Guam and Northern Marianas, according to Japan&#39;s Self Defence Forces.

As many as 700 military personnel are expected to take part in the Jeanne d&#39;Arc mission for young officers, also to be joined by French frigate Courbet.

Some 60 British sailors and&nbsp;220 Japanese military personnel will go on board the French vessels, along with their American counterparts.

The exercise &quot;is designed to strengthen and to enhance trust and cooperation among the participating countries&quot;, Japan&#39;s Joint Staff said in a statement Friday.

The naval mission also coincided with a move by the US to deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the western Pacific led by the USS Carl Vinson.

This makes it the seventh test-launch of the much-hyped Musudan missile which has a range of anywhere between 2500 and 4000 kilometres, making it capable of striking the US military bases in Guam, AFP reported. Only one met with partial success - the launch in June that flew 400 kilometres into the Sea of Japan.

The US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) said in a statement that the launch, detected just after midday did not pose a threat to North America.&quot;The North American Aerospace Defense Command determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America.&quot;

Saturday&#39;s launch was detected at 1203 Pyongyang time (0333 GMT) from the northwestern North Korean town of Kusong. Such launches are usually detected within hours or even minutes by the South Korean and US militaries, and it was unclear why Sunday&#39;s USSTRATCOM announcement came so long after the event, AFP reported.

There was no immediate confirmation from the South Korean side.

The June test was hailed by leader Kim Jong-Un as a complete success and proof of the North&#39;s ability to strike US bases across &quot;the Pacific operation theatre.&quot;

After a string of failures in recent months, North Korea successfully tested two powerful Musudan medium-range missiles on Wednesday one of which flew 400 kilometres (250 miles) into the Sea of Japan (East Sea). Existing United Nations measures prohibit North Korea from using ballistic missile technology. After Pyongyang conducted a fourth nuclear test on January 6, followed by a long-range rocket launch on February 7, the UN Security Council adopted its most punishing sanctions yet against North Korea. Any further measures would require the support of veto-wielding Permanent Council member China, which has shied away from additional action in favour of calls for resuming the six-party talks. In response to Choe's remarks, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular briefing that "all the six parties of the six party talks have the right to express their will". She reiterated Beijing's long-standing call for all parties to "create favourable conditions for an early resumption of the six-party talks". Choe denied that Pyongyang felt a lack of support from its neighbour. "We are not at all disappointed by the Chinese," she said. No thoughts of resuming nuclear talks, says North Korea

The deployment of an advanced US missile defence system to counter the growing threat from North Korea will not be discussed when defence chiefs meet at an Asian security forum on the weekend, South Korean defence officials said today. 
 
The United States and South Korea began talks on deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) anti-missile system after North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test in January&nbsp;and launched a long-range rocket a month later. 
 
&quot;Recent North Korean missile tests showed the need for improved missile defences, even though the latest test launch on Tuesday was a failure,&quot;&nbsp;US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said en route to the Shangri-La Dialogue, a three-day Asian security meeting being held in Singapore from Friday. 
 
&quot;There is no plan for discussions on THAAD at the Shangri-La Dialogue,&quot; a South Korean defence ministry official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said separate talks on the missile defence system were continuing between South Korea and the United States. 
 
&quot;When the issues are coordinated, there will be an announcement,&quot; the official said.
