<h2>Understanding how continents move</h2>

Understanding the movements of continents requires meticulous investigation. Scientists gather samples through fieldwork, determining the rock's age and latitude when it formed.&nbsp;

The formation and breakup of supercontinents are linked to the behaviour of the "solid but pliable" mantle. Mantle is the layer between the Earth's crust and core that stores ever-existing heat.&nbsp;

As per the book, the movement of&nbsp;continents occurs as heat rises in the mantle. The continents move towards that spot in the mantle which is comparatively cooler than other parts. That's how continents collide with each other, heralding the birth of a new supercontinent.

Eventually, when heat starts building up in the mantle below that giant continent, it starts to tear apart again, leading to the creation of new oceans and initiating another cycle.

<h2>Amasia: The next supercontinent?</h2>

Drawing from this knowledge of the past and understanding mantle mechanics, Mitchell predicts "Amasia" as the next supercontinent.&nbsp;

Contrary to some theories suggesting it could form from the closing of the Pacific or Atlantic oceans, Mitchell argues that Amasia will emerge through the disappearance of the Arctic Ocean.&nbsp;

As per his prediction, Amasia will form out of the merger of North America and Asia.

However, whether Mitchell's predictions about Amasia are accurate remains a question that none of us will live long enough to answer. It will be a matter for our coming generations to discover.

The law, which first came into being in 2016 only allowed patients with terminal illness to have the access to the procedure. However, after criticism and court cases, in 2019, a Quebec judge ordered that the law, deemed unconstitutional at the time also allow adults who didn't have a reasonably foreseeable death to have the opportunity to avail the procedure. More than two months after re-opening the "Express Entry' scheme, the Canadian government is expected to clock in massive changes which will reflect in the 2023 calendar. Reportedly, in an attempt to address the labour shortage in the country,&nbsp;

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will now be&nbsp;issuing an Invitation to Apply (ITA)&nbsp;to candidates with specific work experience, education or language abilities that are well-positioned to support Canada's economy and labour force.

Succinctly put, the move will ensure that apart from the top-ranking candidates in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), other applicants with a much narrow but efficient ability are also given a chance.&nbsp;

Currently, vacancies are at an all-time high in the country which might have necessitated such a move.&nbsp;

“Canadas high immigration targets, including those through Express Entry programs, stem from several factors including a job vacancy rate that currently stands at 5.7 per cent," a CIC report said.&nbsp;

In an attempt to bring more labour force to the country, the Canadian government has reduced the CRS score to as low as 504 in the recent round of draws. Moreover, in the latest draw, IRCC invited&nbsp;&nbsp;3,750 candidates, which was an increase of 500 candidates over the previous draw.&nbsp;

What exactly is the Express Entry scheme?

As reported by WION, the 'Express Entry Scheme' for&nbsp;permanent residency was reopened in Canada after a hiatus of 18 months. In simple terms, this scheme is an application management system used to select and zero in on candidates best suited to live and work in the North American country.&nbsp;

Currently, IRCC uses CRS to rank prospective candidates based on parameters such as age, education, language skills and work experience.&nbsp;

Three separate programs concurrently run under this scheme viz. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Draws for FSWP and FSTP were put on hold in December 2020 while CEC was halted later in September 2021.&nbsp;

While it is not necessary to have a job offer in hand to be eligible for the aforementioned schemes, it does help in gathering the minimum marks for CRS.&nbsp;

Once an applicant has figured out their CRS score and the scheme they want to apply to, they need to create a profile and simply fill it out. If the marks are good enough and the documentation water-tight, they will receive an ITA.&nbsp;

Afterward, they need to fill out the form and upload the documents, all within two months of receiving the ITA.&nbsp;The Canadian government or IRCC will attempt to process the applications within a timeframe of six months or less.

Global nitrogen fertilizer sales were worth $53 billion in 2020, and prices are at least 80 per cent&nbsp;higher so far this year, according to Argus Media.

Normally, MKC, a Kansas farm cooperative, sells fertilizer to farmers for payment up front with delivery months down the road, giving growers certainty about a key expense.

With prices soaring, MKC has scaled back its pre-paid sales out of caution.

"You just don't know what the price is going to be. It has put a lot of retailers in a tough spot," said Troy Walker, MKC's director of retail fertilizer.

Delaying fertilizer purchases until spring runs the risk of further supply chain congestion as farmers rush to apply fertilizer and plant seed during a tight window.

"There's going to be a lot of people who wait and see," Coppock said. "(But) if everybody's scrambling in the spring to get enough, somebody's corn isn't going to get covered."

Wisconsin farmer Jim Zimmerman decided to bite the bullet and secure all his fertilizer for spring, this year.

"It's next year's prices I'm worried about," Zimmerman said. "It could get worse."

Nutrien Ltd, the largest U.S. farm supplier, has secured less nitrogen fertilizer than usual for spring delivery because manufacturers are making less available, said Jeff Tarsi, the company's senior vice president of retail. Sales to farmers are likely to occur closer to spring than usual, he said.

The one nitrogen product that is running short in North America is urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), said Kreg Ruhl, crop nutrients manager at Illinois-based farm cooperative Growmark. UAN is a liquid form that is convenient for farmers to apply.

The US&nbsp;International Trade Commission is conducting an anti-dumping investigation into UAN from Russia and Trinidad and Tobago, at the request of US&nbsp;producer CF Industries.

Importers are reluctant to book shipments into 2022, because they may have to pay retroactive duties if CF wins its case, Ruhl said.

Scientists said Wednesday they had discovered the oldest remains of a domestic dog in the Americas dating back more than 10,000 years, suggesting the animals accompanied the first waves of human settlers.

Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age -- between 30,000 and 11,000 years ago.

The history of dogs has been intertwined with man since ancient times, and studying canine DNA can provide a good timeline for human settlement.

A new study led by the University at Buffalo analysed the mitochondrial DNA of a bone fragment found in Southeast Alaska.

The team initially thought the fragment belonged to a bear.

But closer examination revealed it to be part of a femur of a dog that lived in the region around 10,150 years ago, and that shared a genetic lineage with American dogs that lived before the arrival of European breeds.

"Because dogs are a proxy for human occupation, our data help provide not only a timing but also a location for the entry of dogs and people into the Americas," said Charlotte Lindqvist, an evolutionary biologist from the University at Buffalo and the University of South Dakota.

She said the findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, supports the theory that humans arrived in North America from Siberia.

"Southeast Alaska might have served as an ice-free stopping point of sorts, and now -- with our dog -- we think that early human migration through the region might be much more important than some previously suspected," said Lindqvist.

A carbon isotope analysis of the bone fragment showed that the ancient Southeast Alaskan dog likely had a marine diet that consisted of fish and seal and whale scraps.

Lindqvist said dogs did not arrive in North America all at once. Some arrived later from East Asia with the Thule people, while Siberian huskies were imported to Alaska during the Gold Rush in the 19th century.

There is a long-standing contention about whether the first humans entered North America through a continental corridor that formed as the ice sheets receded, or along the North Pacific coast thousands of years earlier.

Previous age estimates of dog remains were younger than the fragment found by Lindqvist and the team, suggesting that dogs arrived in the continent during the later, continental migrations.&nbsp;

Lindqvist said her findings supported the theory that dogs in fact arrived in North America among the first waves of humans settlers.

"We also have evidence that the coastal edge of the ice sheet started melting at least around 17,000 year ago, whereas the inland corridor was not viable until around 13,000 years ago," she told AFP.&nbsp;

"And genetic evidence that a coastal route for the first Americans over 16,000 years ago seems most likely. Our study supports that our coastal dog is a descendant of dogs that participated in this initial migration."

"We also have evidence that the coastal edge of the ice sheet started melting at least around 17,000 year ago, whereas the inland corridor was not viable until around 13,000 years ago," she told AFP. "And genetic evidence that a coastal route for the first Americans over 16,000 years ago seems most likely. Our study supports that our coastal dog is a descendant of dogs that participated in this initial migration."
