How the stock market performed today: Top gainers and losers in Nifty 500

Indian capital markets logged their best single-day gains in over four years on May 12, driven by the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan and favourable global cues. The easing of trade tensions between the US and China, following fresh tariff decisions, lifted investor sentiment across the board.
The United States and China jointly declared a 90-day pause on a portion of their existing tariffs, as outlined in a statement released by both countries. The ceasefire between India and Pakistan has paved the way for a sharp rally of nearly 4 per cent in India’s benchmark indices, Nifty50 and the Sensex, which closed at 24,924.70 and 82,429.90, respectively.
The prime mover of the rally will be the foreign institutional investors (FII) who have been buying Indian equities for sixteen continuous days, except on May 09, when the India-Pakistan tensions escalated. All sectoral indices ended in the green.
While India’s volatility gauge plunged during Monday’s intraday session. India VIX measures the market's expectation of future volatility based on the Nifty50 index options contracts. India VIX fell as much as 20.46 per cent to 17.79, the lowest level since the end of April, according to Bloomberg data.
Shares of information technology (IT) companies were in focus as the Nifty IT index registered a surge of 6.7 per cent, thus recording its sharpest intraday rally in over five years.
The sharp up move in IT stocks was triggered after the US decided to reduce tariffs on China to 30 per cent from 145 per cent for 90 days. Earlier, on April 7, 2020, the Nifty IT index soared 8.3 per cent in intraday trade.
In the past one month, the Nifty IT index outperformed the market by surging 15 per cent, as compared to a 6.7 per cent rise in the Nifty 50. However, thus far in the current calendar year 2025, the IT index has slipped 12 per cent due to concerns over the recession in the US and the tariff war.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Realty (up 5.93 per cent), followed by Metal (up 5.86 per cent) and IT indices, were the top gainers, while only the Pharma index (down 0.07 per cent) was trading in the red.

Indian stocks meltdown: Nifty marks worst losing streak in 29 years

Indian equity markets saw significant weakness last week, with the nifty 50 and Sensex plunging around 2.5%. The broader indices were hit harder, with midcap and smallcap indices dropping over 5%. This slump came as global and domestic factors weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

India's Nifty, Sensex plunge; Market awaits budget 2025

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) board is scheduled to meet today, where it is expected to discuss a range of measures, including stricter norms for Futures & Options (F&O) trading, the introduction of a "New Asset Class," and mutual fund lite regulations. In anticipation of these potential measures, the benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, have each fallen by over 1 percent ahead of the meeting.

SEBI Board Meeting: Key Regulations Under Discussion and Why Markets Are Uneasy

Indian shares started Wednesday at fresh all-time highs. Benchmark indices marked the second consecutive day of record highs. However, volatility is expected to play a role in Wednesday's trading session.

Investors will keep an eye on Indian shares to see if they can rally further to new milestones even as volatility on profit booking returns. The blue-chip Sensex index rose above 80,000 points for the first time ever. The index hit a life high of 80,039.

The broader Nifty index also hit a new all-time high of 24,292. On Tuesday, both benchmarks closed in the red after hitting a fresh high after new records and milestones in June.

Last week, benchmark indices surpassed key levels in three consecutive sessions, hitting multiple new records. Both benchmarks have already breached year-end targets pushing analysts to reassess their predictions.

The nifty index is now eyeing the 25,000 mark after the Sensex breached the 80,000 level. Most market watchers believe the rally in Indian stocks will continue. How high is the real question?

Now, let's put the current bull run into context: The Sensex index has surged over 7,000 points following a dramatic drop on election results day. The index took just two trading sessions to go from 78,000 to 79,000. In 16 out of 17 sessions since June 7, the nifty has hit some kind of a record.

India’s Sensex hits 80,000 for the first time

Now, we turn our attention to the bull run in Indian stocks. The real question for Friday's trade is: can the Indian stock market sustain the sharp surge in recent weeks? Or, will profit booking kick in? After breaching multiple milestones this week, Indian shares hit fresh records on Thursday. Benchmark indices set multiple new milestones for the second straight session, surpassing key levels.

Can Sensex & Nifty at new all-time highs surge further?

Records, records and more records. That is the story of Indian stocks this month. After breaching multiple key milestones this week, Indian shares hit fresh all-time highs early on Friday. India's benchmark indices set multiple new milestones for the third straight session, surpassing key levels.

The blue-chip Sensex index is now eyeing the 80,000 points level. The broader nifty index is looking at the 25,000 mark. Both the benchmarks have breached year-end targets already. Still, analysts broadly expect the rally in Indian stocks to run further. The real question is - to what levels.

The Sensex index has risen over a staggering 7,000 points since a sharp slump on the election results day. For the index, the jump to 79,000 from 78,000 took just two trading sessions. On Friday, the index opened at a new record high of 79,458 and jumped further to a fresh life high of 79,672 points.

The Nifty index also started Friday at a new record of 24,086 and rose further to an all-time high of 24,174 points. These are levels not expected until the end of the year.

On Thursday, the Sensex opened at a record high of 78,759 and rose further to breach the 79,000 level for the first time ever. The index rose to an all-time high of 79,396 and closed at a record of 79,243. The broader Nifty index started at a new high of 23,882 and rose further to a new all-time high of 24,087. The index closed at a life high of 24,044.

In the previous session, too, both indices extended their bull run for another session of multiple milestones. Every measure on Wednesday and Thursday was a new milestone - record open, intra-day high not seen ever, and life high close.

Now, let's put the current bull run into context. The nifty index has marked some kind of a record in 14 of 15 sessions since June 7. Monday was the only exception in the record-high runs for the index. The rally is driven by positioning ahead of the budget on expectations of tax reforms and pro-growth announcements. The surge also suggests that the risk of a crash will increase if the government does not deliver on those expectations.

Indian stocks rally: Sensex eyes 80,000 points

We look at the record rally in Indian stocks, marking a strong recovery from election results day loss. However, the volatility has also been high, with global cues pointing to weakness in world stocks on Monday.

India's Nifty hit a record every single day last week

Extreme fluctuations in Indian stocks India's Benchmark stock indices are likely to have another seesaw session on Tuesday. This comes after shares paired gains at Monday's close after the Sensex and Nifty registered fresh record highs.

India's Sensex breaches 76,000 for the first time

The Indian stock market witnessed a significant downturn on Wednesday, with the Sensex plummeting over 900 points and slipping below the crucial 73,000-level.

This sharp decline was mirrored by the Nifty, which also experienced a notable drop below 22,000.

However, the brunt of the market turmoil was felt in the smaller stocks segment, with the smallcap index witnessing its worst single-day fall since December 2022, losing over 5 per cent of its value.

Midcaps and microcaps followed suit, shedding 4 per cent and 6 per cent respectively.

The collective impact saw a staggering ₹14 lakh crore being wiped off the market capitalisation of all BSE-listed stocks, which now stands at ₹372 lakh crore.

Analysts have been quick to point out that the recent downturn in the stock market defies the global trade setup, particularly with the S&P500 hitting a record high overnight.

With $3 billion invested so far this month, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have also demonstrated their faith in the Indian market.

Hence, the root cause of the market turmoil appears to be more domestic in nature, driven by internal factors rather than external influences.

Sebi's recent stress test could be identified as a significant trigger for the market crash, according to Madhabi Puri Buch, the chairperson of the market regulator.

Buch's warning about the presence of froth in certain segments of the market, particularly in smallcaps and midcaps, has raised concerns among investors.

This cautionary stance by Sebi has prompted actions from market participants, with ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund temporarily halting fresh subscriptions via lumpsum mode to smallcap and midcap funds.

Furthermore, valuation concerns have been brewing in the smallcap space for some time, with excessive valuations being driven by the irrational exuberance of retail investors.

Sebi's statement that valuation parameters are disconnected from fundamentals has underscored these apprehensions, leading to a corrective phase in the market.

Additionally, as per a report by the Economic Times, the recent crackdown by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the Mahadev Online Book illegal betting app scam has unearthed a link to the stock market bubble, further exacerbating investor jitters.

In response to the market downturn and regulatory warnings, stockbrokers have begun advising traders to liquidate their leveraged bets in mid and smallcaps.

This move aims to mitigate risks amid the heightened volatility in the market.

Moreover, with the financial year end approaching, investors are engaging in profit booking and loss harvesting activities to optimise their portfolios for tax purposes.

These strategic manoeuvres are contributing to the ongoing reshuffling of investment positions, adding to the market turbulence.

From a technical standpoint, the market sentiment remains bearish, with indicators suggesting a continuation of the downward trend.

Nifty's formation of a long-legged Doji candle, coupled with the persistence of the bearish evening star pattern, reflects the prevailing uncertainty among investors.

Additionally, on the derivatives front, bearish sentiments have been observed, with sectors witnessing either short build-up or long unwinding activities.

India: Sensex & Nifty gain for fifth session, foreign investors pick India for returns | World DNA

Benchmark equity indices in India continued their remarkable rally, with the BSE Sensex surging past the 65,000 mark for the first time ever on Monday. The surge was driven by bullish global market trends and foreign fund inflows, resulting in the fourth consecutive day of gains. The NSE Nifty also achieved a significant milestone, reaching its lifetime high of 19,318 points. The strong performance of key stocks fueled the market rally, while certain sectors experienced minor setbacks.

Market Performance

The 30-share BSE Sensex soared by 449.46 points, reaching an all-time peak of 65,168.02 during early trading hours. Likewise, the NSE Nifty climbed 128.95 points, achieving its lifetime high of 19,318. Notable gainers in the Sensex pack included HDFC, HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Finserv, and ICICI Bank. Conversely, Power Grid, Maruti, Tech Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, HCL Technologies, and Axis Bank were among the laggards.

Global Market Trends

In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong witnessed positive trading sessions, aligning with the overall bullish sentiment. Additionally, the U.S. markets closed significantly higher on June 30, further contributing to the positive global market trends.

Oil Prices and Foreign Fund Inflows

Global oil benchmark Brent crude experienced a marginal decline of 0.01 per cent, settling at $75.41 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) displayed a strong interest in the Indian equity market, purchasing equities worth ₹6,397.13 crores on June 30, according to exchange data. The sustained flow of foreign funds has been identified as a key driver behind the ongoing rally in the Indian market, with June witnessing inflows of ₹47,148 crores.

GST Collections

The Finance Ministry announced that Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections exceeded the ₹1.60 lakh crore mark for the fourth time since the introduction of the indirect tax regime. In June, GST collections rose by 12 per cent, surpassing ₹1.61 lakh crore. This increase reflects positive economic activity and further supports the bullish market sentiment.

Market Analysis

The Indian Express cited V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, who explained that the ongoing rally in global stock markets could be primarily attributed to the unexpected strength of the U.S. economy, which achieved a 2 per cent GDP growth in Q1 2023. Despite the Federal Reserve implementing a significant 500 basis points rate hike, the U.S. economy has outperformed expectations. Global markets, which had previously anticipated a U.S. recession by mid-2023, are now adjusting their projections to compensate for the overly pessimistic outlook in 2022.

Vijayakumar further emphasized that sustained foreign portfolio investments (FPI) inflows, amounting to ₹47,148 crores in June, remain a key driver of the Indian market rally. The positive investor sentiment indicates growing confidence in the Indian economy and its potential for further growth.
