Trump asks US envoys appointed by Obama to quit by Inauguration Day

US President-elect Donald Trump's call to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could "upset the delicate balance" of India-Pakistan ties, the New York Times said as it sounded a critical tone of him breaking decades of diplomatic practice in freewheeling calls with foreign leaders.

"President-elect Donald J Trump has broken with decades of diplomatic practice in freewheeling calls with foreign leaders," the New York Times said as the next leader of the US upset the status quo in his conversations with world leaders.

In an unprecedented break from diplomatic practice and a move that could irk China, Trump spoke with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, becoming the first president or president-elect to speak with a Taiwanese leader since at least 1979, when Washington had severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan as part of its recognition of China.

On November 30, Trump spoke with Sharif, who according to a Pakistani government readout of their call, invited Trump to visit the south Asian country. The readout said Trump had called Pakistan a "fantastic" country full of "fantastic" people that he "would love" to visit as president. He had also called Sharif as "terrific" and Pakistanis "are one of the most intelligent people", according to the Pakistani readout which added that Trump said he is "ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems".

"Should Trump follow through, he risks alienating India, which sees Pakistan as a major antagonist, and appearing to reward Pakistan's behaviour; should he renege, he risks upsetting Pakistani leaders who are sensitive about perceived American intransigence. Either way, the call could upset the delicate balance of India-Pakistan ties, which the US has struggled to manage amid a history of wars and recent skirmishes," the New York Times said.

On Trump's conversation with Ing-wen, NYT said the call "risks infuriating China", which considers Taiwan a breakaway province governed by Chinese rebels.

"By honouring the Taiwanese president with a formal call, Trump's transition team implicitly suggests that it considers Taiwan an independent state," it said, noting that the US has declined to recognise Taiwan since 1979, when it shifted recognition to the government in Beijing. Taiwan itself has yet to declare formal independence.

Trump had tweeted, "The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency".

In a December 2 conversation with Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines, Trump invited him to visit Washington.

NYT said Duterte has been accused of gross human rights abuses, had used abusive language against President Barack Obama and declared his country's "separation" from the US during a recent trip to Beijing.

"Honoring Duterte with a presidential invitation implies US approval of his behavior, which Obama's administration had been working to curb," NYT said.

Trump also praised Kazakhstan's leader Nursultan Nazarbayev for "fantastic success", in tones that suggest approval for Nazarbayev's strongman rule.

According to the Kazakh government's readout of the call, Trump "stressed that under the leadership of Nursultan Nazarbayev, our country over the years of independence had achieved fantastic success that can be called a miracle".

The NYT further said that after brushing off the United Kingdom, Trump offered a casual invitation to British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"If you travel to the US you should let me know," he told her, far short of a formal invitation. Trump also met with Nigel Farage, former leader of the fringe UK Independence Party a "slap to May", NYT said.

Trump later said that Farage should become the British ambassador to the US, though presidents typically avoid telling foreign counterparts how to staff their governments, NYT added.

In another break from diplomatic protocol, Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump had joined his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

NYT said why such a move matters is that rather than inviting state department officials to staff his meeting with Abe, Trump invited his daughter.

"The meeting alarmed diplomats, who worried that Trump lacked preparation after a long record of criticizing Japan. It also blurred the line between Trump's businesses, which (his daughter) helps run, and the US Government, with which she has no role," it said.

Those two calls, the paper said, could risk alienating India and China

From Pak to Taiwan, Trump's phone calls upsetting diplomacy: NYT

The New York Times published an account of the final days of Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

The theme was that his aides were keeping him under tighter leash, to keep on message and prevent another meltdown from sabotaging his chances to become the next president so close to the November 8 election.

One of the most noteworthy things was the report's claim that Trump no longer has control of his Twitter account. So often over the last 16 months, sometimes in the very dead of night, Trump used Twitter to bully opponents, peddle conspiracy theories, and basically to vent rage.

It is easy to see the contrast in his tweets of the last few days, compared to his earlier unfiltered ones.

The recent ones are generically about the campaign, and highly uncontroversial:

Contrast that with one from a few months ago, still during the campaign:

×

There is a lot wrong with this tweet: it suggests Trump sees African Americans as props to benefit his campaign, not as people to be comforted in a time of grief. There is more to be said of this, and there are many other tweets that could have been sampled as examples of a man who needs to be controlled, but rather than dissect it further the point here is to appreciate the new discipline and focus.

The New York Times writes: "Aides to Mr Trump have finally wrested away the Twitter account that he used to colourfully -- and often counterproductively -- savage his rivals. But offline, Mr Trump still privately muses about all o the ways he will punish his enemies after Election Day, including a threat to fund a "super PAC" with vengeance as its core mission."

The New York Times report paints a picture of an unchanged man struggling to operate under tighter control. No presidential candidate runs a campaign completely unfiltered, to say the least. There are polling companies consulted and other experts guide the campaign in various ways. Trump appeared to challenge that, but no longer does.

From the above quote, it appears his urge for instant revenge has not diminished just because it doesn't have immediate expression on social media.

In a couple days, the voters will decide if it is wise to empower a man with weapons that can wipe out countries when his aides do not trust him to post on his own Twitter account.

Trump campaign unwilling to let presidential candidate Tweet unfiltered: NYT

Two women accused Donald Trump of inappropriate touching in a story posted on the New York Times website on Wednesday, accusations his spokesman called "fiction" but which may further roil the Republican presidential nominee's campaign with only four weeks to go until the November 8 election.

One of the women, Jessica Leeds, appeared on camera to recount how Trump grabbed her breast and tried to put his hand up her skirt in the first class cabin on a flight to New York in the early 1980s.

The second woman, Rachel Crooks, described how Trump "kissed me directly on the mouth" in 2005 outside the elevator in Trump Tower in Manhattan, where she was a receptionist at a real estate firm.

Reuters could not independently verify the incidents described in the New York Times story. The New York Times, Leeds and Crooks did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

"This entire article is fiction, and for the New York Times to launch a completely false, coordinated character assassination against Mr Trump on a topic like this is dangerous," Trump campaign senior communications adviser Jason Miller said in a statement.

The report comes on the heels of a 2005 video that surfaced on Friday that showed Trump bragging about groping women, kissing them without permission, and trying unsuccessfully to seduce a married woman.

That video has damaged Trump's poll numbers, particularly with women voters. He was chastised by Republican leaders, and some called on him to drop out of the presidential race.

Trump has apologised for his remarks, which he called private "locker room" talk. During the presidential debate on Sunday, he said he had not actually kissed women without permission nor groped them.

That assertion was what spurred one of the women to speak out, the New York Times said in its report.

"He was like an octopus," said Leeds, now 74. "His hands were everywhere."

The New York Times reported that Trump, in an angry phone call, denied the incidents and threatened to sue the newspaper.

Two women accuse Donald Trump of inappropriately touching them: Report

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump should not be elected as the next US president as he is "unfit" for the post and makes "crude generalisations" about nations and religions, two of America's most influential newspapers have said in their editorials, Indian news agency PTI reported today.

Editorial boards of The Washington Post and The New York Times yesterday made a strong case that Trump should not be elected as the president.

The editorials came ahead of an all-important first presidential debate in Hofstra University tonight.

"It is beyond debate that Donald Trump is unfit to be president," said The Washington Post, while 'The New York Times' argued the case in its lead editorial 'Why Donald Trump should not be president'.

A day earlier 'The New York Times' endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as the next president of the US.

The elections for the next occupant of the White House would be held on November 8. Latest polls show that the two are in a dead heat.

About a month ago, Trump, 70, was trailing Clinton by more than seven-eight points on an average.

"Voters attracted by the force of the Trump personality should pause and take note of the precise qualities he exudes as an audaciously different politician: bluster, savage mockery of those who challenge him, degrading comments about women, mendacity, crude generalisations about nations and religions," The New York Times editorial board wrote.

"Our presidents are role models for generations of our children. Is this the example we want for them?" the daily asked.

As Americans prepare to watch the first presidential debate, The Washington Post editorial board said the challenge for today's audience was to avoid the trap of thinking of this debate as yet another opportunity for "the real Trump" or even a "new Trump" to emerge, either stylistically or substantively.

"It's way too late for that. The real Trump has been before the citizenry ever since he announced his candidacy in a rambling jeremiad that blamed Mexico for 'sending' 'rapists' to the United States as illegal immigrants. It has been said that the true test of an ordinary person's character is how you behave when no one is watching," it said.

"The corollary standard for a presidential candidate could be: how you behave repeatedly in public, before the one big night when everyone is watching. Even by that more forgiving standard, Trump has already flunked," The Washington Post said.

The editorial said Trump had amply demonstrated his "unworthiness" to occupy the Oval Office.

"It's beyond his capacity in the upcoming 90-minute question-and-answer sessions to reverse or even substantially modify that conclusion," the daily said.

Meanwhile, the Trump Campaign slammed 'The New York Times' for endorsing Clinton.

"The New York Times' Editorial Board is the embodiment of the rigged system Donald Trump is running against," said Jason Miller, senior communications adviser to the Trump Campaign.

Trump should not be US president: NYT, Washington Post

The family of American journalist Marie Colvin who died in Syria in 2012 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in a US court, accusing the Syrian government of deliberately killing her, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

Colvin and French photographer, Remi Ochlik, were killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs in 2012 while reporting on the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year.

The lawsuit, filed in Washington, said Syrian officials deliberately targeted rockets against a makeshift broadcast studio where Colvin and other reporters were living and working.

The lawsuit, to which The New York Time article provides an online link, said the attack was part of a plan orchestrated at the highest levels of the Syrian government to silence local and international media "as part of its effort to crush political opposition".

Colvin and Ochlik were both prize-winning reporters of wars in the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere. The Britain-based Colvin, who lost an eye while working in Sri Lanka in 2001, was working for the Sunday Times at the time of her death.

Credited with creating the genre of street fashion photography, legendary fashion photographer Bill Cunningham died Saturday, according to the New York Times where he worked for nearly 40 years. He was 87.

Cunningham, whose watchful eye brought images of New Yorkers – from the well-heeled to unsuspecting trendsetters – to the public, had been hospitalised recently after a stroke, the Times reported.

He was, as the Times called him, an "unlikely cultural anthropologist." He held a passion for capturing a subject or trend`s look, whatever it may be.

Cunningham, who plied New York in his trademark blue workman`s jacket with a camera slung around his neck and traveled on his bicycle, had an uncanny talent in unearthing major, even avant-garde trends on the street, on the catwalk or at glittering parties.

In a 2010 documentary about Cunningham, Anna Wintour, the powerful editor of American Vogue and one of the photographer`s muses, marveled at his ability to "see something, on the street or on the runway, that completely missed all of us. And in six months` time, that will be a trend!"

Tributes pour in
Frank Rich, a former New York Times columnist and executive producer of the HBO series "Veep," tweeted: "Bill Cunningham was as delightful and fascinating a person and colleague as he was as artist. An independent mind, big heart, no airs."

A 2008 recipient of France`s Legion of Honor, Cunningham was also named a living landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 2009.

"Today we lost a Living Landmark, not that he ever stood still. Let`s all be more fabulous in Bill`s memory," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio`s office wrote on Twitter.

De Blasio added: "We will remember Bill`s blue jacket and bicycle. But most of all we will remember the vivid, vivacious New York he captured in his photos."

"His wealth of knowledge is absolutely staggering and he is self-effacing. He knows exactly who he is, he is nobody else`s guy but his own... It`s beyond scholarly."

A 2008 recipient of France`s Legion of Honor, Cunningham was also named a living landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 2009

And in six months` time, that will be a trend!" Tributes pour in Frank Rich, a former New York Times columnist and executive producer of the HBO series "Veep," tweeted: "Bill Cunningham was as delightful and fascinating a person and colleague as he was as artist. An independent mind, big heart, no airs." A 2008 recipient of France`s Legion of Honor, Cunningham was also named a living landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 2009. "Today we lost a Living Landmark, not that he ever stood still. Let`s all be more fabulous in Bill`s memory," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio`s office wrote on Twitter. De Blasio added: "We will remember Bill`s blue jacket and bicycle. But most of all we will remember the vivid, vivacious New York he captured in his photos." The discreet man, born in Boston in 1929, "doesn`t say much," one of the founding editors of InStyle magazine, Hal Rubenstein, told AFP in 2014. "His wealth of knowledge is absolutely staggering and he is self-effacing. He knows exactly who he is, he is nobody else`s guy but his own... It`s beyond scholarly." Times publisher and chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr added: "His company was sought after by the fashion world`s rich and powerful, yet he remained one of the kindest, most gentle and humble people I have ever met." "We have lost a legend, and I am personally heartbroken to have lost a friend," Sulzberger added. (AFP)
